Pakistan fools its ally Azerbaijan: In a significant development affecting the ongoing relations between Pakistan and its 'Bhaijaan' country Azerbaijan, Pakistan has signed a major defense deal with Azerbaijan, selling 40 JF-17 Thunder fighter jets and through the deal, Pakistan has likely fooled Azerbaijan of billions of dollars. Here are all the details you need to know about the recent development between Pakistan and its ally Azerbaijan.
In what is being called the biggest export deal for 40 JF-17 Thunder fighter jets so far, Pakistan and Turkey have signed $4.6 billions. For a background information, the average cost of each JF-17 Thunder fighter jets is only around $32 million, but the average cost of sale of the jets to Azerbaijan is around $1.28 billion, thus giving losses in billions to Azerbaijan.

In another significant development on Pakistan- Azerbaijan relations, the growing nexus between Islamabad-Ankara-Baku is expected to deepen and broaden further during the visit of Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Azerbaijan after concluding his ongoing visit to Iran, as per a report by news agency IANS.
According to a report by IANS, a trilateral summit of Pakistan, Turkey and Azerbaijan is expected to be held in Lachin, a strategic city that connects Azerbaijan to Armenia, in the next 48 hours to take 'important decisions on joint strategies' in several fields, including defence.
'This high-level trilateral meeting between the heads of state/government of Turkey, Azerbaijan and Pakistan will be held in the city of Lachin, Azerbaijan, which is known for its natural beauty and strategic importance. The meeting is being held to consider the regional situation arising after the recent conflict between Pakistan and India, explore opportunities for mutual cooperation, and formulate a strategy for a common future,' Pakistani media reported on Tuesday.

Fired US Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden speaks out, details abrupt dismissal

Carla Hayden, the first woman and African American to serve as the US Librarian of Congress, revealed she has had no direct contact with the Trump administration over her sudden dismissal in May. 'No one has talked to me directly at all from the White House,' Hayden told correspondent Robert Costa. 'I've received no communication directly, except for that one email. That's the only communication,' Hayden said in an exclusive interview with CBS News. Hayden described the abrupt manner in which she was removed from her post, which she held since 2016 after being appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate. On May 8, she received a brief email stating: 'Carla, on behalf of President Donald J Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately. Thank you for your service.' Asked if her tenure truly ended with 'one missive that's electronic,' she confirmed, 'That was it.' Hayden added, 'I was never notified beforehand and after.' The Trump administration justified the dismissal partly over Hayden's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts at the Library of Congress. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on May 10: 'There were quite concerning things that she had done at the Library of Congress in the pursuit of DEI and putting inappropriate books in the library for children.' Leavitt added, 'She has been removed from her position, and the president is well within his rights to do that.' Hayden faced political pressure from the conservative advocacy group American Accountability Foundation (AAF), which accused her and other library leaders of promoting children's books with 'radical content' and literature opposing President Trump. Hours before the firing announcement, the AAF called Hayden 'woke' and 'anti-Trump' on its X account, demanding, 'It's time to get her OUT.' As Librarian of Congress, Hayden oversaw management and policy for the nation's largest library, which serves Congress and the public with vast collections of books, historical papers, rare artifacts, and archives of presidential and Supreme Court documents. Her removal marks one of several dismissals of federal officials perceived as misaligned with Trump's agenda during his second term.

India will protect farmers' interest in U.S. trade talks: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

India will prioritise protecting its farmers' interests while assessing potential gains and losses in the ongoing trade negotiations with the U.S. over agricultural market access, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said. "Our priority is to protect the interest of our farmers. India will not work closing its eyes. We will assess our gains and losses. Keeping that in mind, an agreement will be finalised," Mr. Chouhan told the PTI in an interview. He was responding to a query on how India would safeguard farmers amid pressure from the U.S. for greater market access for American agricultural and horticultural products. The negotiators are expected to agree on the framework for the broad contours of the first phase of the bilateral deal, expected to be signed by fall (September-October) 2025. "The discussions are ongoing between India and the U.S. One thing is clear, we will protect the interest of our farmers. When we talk about two nations, we need to see the overall trade," the Minister added. According to a NITI Aayog report on 'Promoting India-U.S. Agricultural Trade under the new U.S. Trade Regime', the value for U.S. agriculture and allied product exports to India was about $2.22 billion in the triennium ending 2024. In the same period, India exported $5.75 billion worth of agricultural products to the U.S. India's main agricultural exports to the U.S. include frozen shrimp, basmati rice, spices, processed cereals, and other value-added products. The U.S. wants to export more agricultural products, including corn, soybeans, and animal feed, but faces high Indian tariffs, especially in agriculture, where average tariffs can reach up to 39% to 50%. Mr. Chouhan's comments come as India and the U.S. continue negotiations on expanding agricultural trade, with Washington seeking reduced tariffs and improved market access for its farm products in the Indian market. India is cautious about fully opening its agriculture and dairy markets due to concerns over the potential backlash from rural communities, and the need to protect domestic producers from global price volatility.
