These are the most beautiful outdoor cinemas in the U.S., says new ranking

Time Out16-07-2025
We all love watching a movie unfold on the big screen outside—whether perched on your picnic blanket with a bottle of wine or reclining in your car with popcorn and soda. And if it so happens that the place where the movie is shown features an incredible backdrop of its own—a wooded space or a beautiful city skyline—that just makes the experience all the more inviting. It's cinematography on a grand scale! And Time Out celebrated just that with its newly revealed list of the most beautiful outdoor cinemas in the U.S.
Coming out on top in America (and No. 4 on the worldwide list) is Cinespia at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles. It may provide an eerie setting to watch a movie in a cemetery but don't worry; you'll be sitting on a grassy lawn and not a gravestone. Bring your blanket and your own snacks to watch the film projected onto the back of a mausoleum. Silver screen ghosts will radiate approval around you, like Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney and Cecil B DeMille, who are all buried here.
This summer's remaining shows include Psycho, Zoolander, Point Break and The Addams Family (Anjelica Houston and Christina Ricci at their best!), as well as a double feature 'Full Moon Slumber Party' with An American Werewolf in London and The Lost Boys. The outdoor screenings include extras like themed photobooths and DJ sets...even fireworks sometimes.
Second on our domestic list (No. 17 worldwide) is Red Rocks Amphitheatre just outside Denver, Colorado. While mainly known as a live concert venue nestled in (what else?) monolithic red rocks with spectacular views over the scrub brush dotted hillsides, the Film on the Rocks movie series opens when warm weather hits the Rockies. This summer, there are five showings total, with one left on August 18: Shrek 2. This extraordinary venue has to be seen to be believed; it's breathtaking. If you arrive early, it's fun to scramble over the rows of backless stone steps that provide seating.
And coming in at No. 23 worldwide is the Rooftop Cinema Club in Los Angeles. (We can personally attest that this is a great place to see The Shining!) You'll arrive just as the sun sets to grab food and beverages from the rooftop snack bar—and to grab photos of the city seen from above. You'll get your own personal headphone set to ensure you dial up the volume you want while you sit back and take in a big-screen favorite. (RCC showcases new releases as well as cult classics.) The club has eight locations across the U.S., but only the downtown L.A. location puts you in the heart of movie-making country.

Jamie Lee Curtis reveals she's already started 'retiring' from Hollywood

Jamie Lee Curtis knows she'll leave Hollywood, having already started 'self-retiring'. The Hollywood star, 66, is the daughter of two screen icons in Psycho star Janet Leigh and Some Like it Hot's Tony Curtis. She shared her frank assessment over how the movie industry has impacted her after seeing both her parents struggle with their careers as their youthful looks began to fade. 'I witnessed my parents lose the very thing that gave them their fame and their life and their livelihood, when the industry rejected them at a certain age. I watched them reach incredible success and then have it slowly erode to where it was gone,' she told The Guardian. 'And that's very painful.' The consequences of that have had a lasting effect on the True Lies and A Fish Called Wanda star who said that, as a result: 'I have been self-retiring for 30 years. 'I have been prepping to get out, so that I don't have to suffer the same as my family did.I want to leave the party before I'm no longer invited.' Curtis, who shot to fame aged 19 thanks to her role in slasher flick Halloween (1978), is actually currently riding high on the wave of career revival, having won her first Oscar in 2023 for Everything Everywhere All at Once. She also received a Bafta nomination for supporting actress earlier this year thanks to her turn with Pamela Anderson as cocktail waitress Annette in The Last Showgirl, while she recently nabbed an Emmy for her guest spot on TV show The Bear, playing alcoholic Donna Berzatto. The actress is under no illusion that her stock has soared as she describes the experience of playing Donna as 'an unleashing of 50 years of being a performer who was never considered to have any range'. 'It took no toll. The toll has been 40 years of holding back something I know is here,' she added. Curtis will be back in cinemas in August as Tess Coleman, mother to Lindsay Lohan's Anna, who endured a body swap with her daughter in the classic Y2K movie from 2003. More Trending In the sequel, Anna has her own teenage daughter, Harper (Julia Butters), and the swap goes four ways as it also involves Harper's enemy Lily (Sophia Hammons) – who is the one this time inhabiting the now grandma Tess's body. The star jokingly calls herself 'a weapon of mass promotion' but it was also her that convinced Disney top brass to ensure Freakier Friday wasn't released only on streaming but got it's proper run in cinemas too. Her argument? As Curtis tells it, 'if you don't think the audience that saw Barbie is going to be the audience that goes and sees Freakier Friday, you're wrong'. Got a story? Horror smash ‘Final Destination Bloodlines' is coming to streaming this week

Get ready to feel the cold, clammy, extremely convoluted hand of death on your shoulder: Final Destination Bloodlines is coming to streaming this week. The horror hit lands on HBO Max this Friday, August 1, less than three months after arriving in theaters. The sixth film in the series, and first since 2011, far outstripped expectations both commercially and critically. If you've seen any of the Final Destination movies, you know they succeed less on plot and character than ridiculously elaborate kills, which are frequently so gory and over-the-top they end up more funny than frightening. Bloodlines has a 93 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes; Time Out's review called it 'daft as hell and a heck of a good time' and praised its 'minimal reliance on nostalgia'. Raking in $285 million at the worldwide box office, Bloodlines is the most successful movie in the franchise and the second biggest horror hit of 2025 after Sinners. If you'd like to binge the entire franchise, you can find it on Tubi, Hulu and Max. And if you still have linear cable, HBO is airing the entire run on Saturday, August 2, at the following times: 12.10pm ET – Final Destination (2000) 1.50pm ET – Final Destination 2 (2003) 3.24pm ET – Final Destination 3 (2006) 5pm ET – The Final Destination (2009) 6.25pm ET – Final Destination 5 (2011) 8pm ET – Final Destination Bloodlines (2025)

This fancy London bar was just crowned the best in the world

We've got bars on the brain at the moment and it seems like we're not the only ones. Just days after Time Out named London's Best Bar for 2025, Side Hustle at the NoMad London has been honoured with the title of 'Best International Hotel Bar' at the 19th annual Spirited Awards. Covent Garden's Side Hustle is a favourite with us too. 'While you might find more extensive collections of tequila and mezcal elsewhere, few agave-focused bars can match the sophistication of this elegant Latin American-themed spot in the Grade II-listed former Police Station that now houses the NoMad hotel,' reads the Time Out review. 'There's an old-school gentleman's club kind of grandeur to this low-lit space, decked out in dark wood booths, green leather seating, an imposing marble-topped bar and walls covered in vibrant photographs taken on the streets of London and Southern California.' Side Hustle features in Time Out's list of the best hotel bars in London, and has been open since 2021. The NoMad also recently revamped its in-house restaurant, renaming it Twenty8 NoMad. Read our review here. The Spirited Awards take place as part of the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation and the winners were announced in New Orleans on July 24. The awards are voted on by a panel of 250 industry experts, including London bar pro Mr Lyan aka Ryan Chetiyawardana, who is the international Spirited Awards chair, and who also recently helped Time Out decide on London's best first date bars. Spirited Awards' biggest gong of the night is for World's Best Bar, which was given to Kumiko in Chicago, while the World's Best Cocktail Menu was won by Panda & Sons in Edinburgh.
