
The year's top trends for early-stage startups in the mid-Atlantic, by the numbers
We've gathered data on 74 early stage startups in the mid-Atlantic region, via our annual RealLIST Startups in Philadelphia, DC, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Data includes employee counts, funds raised, workplace setup and university affiliation.
The startups fell into eight categories: Software, healthtech, greentech, biotech, cybersecurity, robotics, fintech and services. No matter what category the startups represent, many of them have incorporated AI, such as DC-based PerVista AI's gun-detecting technology, Philly-based Sahay AI's railroad inspection robotics or Pittsburgh-based Moss's agriculture analyzer. More of this year's startups use AI in one capacity or another than don't.
Another trend that is obscured by the limited number of categories are three social app startups — Spinnr, InPress and RYLA — that offer alternatives to big social media platforms like X and Facebook. RealLIST Startups continue to lean into the greentech and healthtech sectors, but the overall variety is diverse, including startups that offer everything from vinyl record manufacturing to laundry service.
Right now, though, we're looking at the bigger picture. Read on for some of this year's top regional startup trends, by the numbers.
Hybrid work reigns supreme
It's been a couple of solid years now of industries declaring that remote and hybrid work are out and 100% in-person is in. While there are of course industries where employees have to be in person, whether it's a wet lab or a consumer-facing brick-and-mortar business, tech jobs generally allow for a lot of flexibility.
That flexibility is reflected in the 74 early-stage companies named on the 2025 RealLIST. Less than 10% — just seven — work entirely in person. Those seven startups are spread across industry categories, with four in the largest category, software, and one each in healthtech, greentech and service.
Software, by far, has the most remote-only jobs in the sample, with 17 startups that are remote-only. The two cybersecurity startups are both remote-only as are a few in healthcare, greentech, fintech and service.
47% of the startups are hybrid — the most of any workforce type. Hybrid dominated in healthtech, greentech, biotech, robotics and fintech.
Starting not-so-small
The startups in our dataset have all been founded within the past three years. It's expected that most don't yet have a large number of employees, and that is reflected in the data, where 29 of the 74 startups have 0-2 employees and 51, or about 70% of the startups, have 5 employees or fewer. But there are some surprises.
Gemma Biotherapeutics, at less than a year old, is an outlier, with 80 employees, five times more than the startups with the next highest number of employees, Clean Plate Innovations and RoboLoop, both Pittsburgh startups founded in 2024 with 15 employees each. Counter to what we might expect, some of the youngest startups have the most employees, though it's worth noting that Gemma, Clean Plate and RoboLoop are all university-affiliated.
Overall, about one-third of the 2025 RealLIST Startups have between 5 and 15 employees.
Accelerators have impact, but some startups succeed without them
More than twice as many of the startups have participated in accelerators or incubators, with 19 startups responding that they have not.
29 of the accelerator-attending startups have raised between $100,000 and $999,999, compared to five of the no-accelerator startups.
Where it gets interesting is when you look at startups that have raised $1 million or more. Eight startups in total have surpassed the million-dollar mark — and six of them did not participate in accelerators, incubators or pitch competitions. One startup, Philadelphia's Gemma Biotherapeutics, affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, is an outlier in several areas, including raises. The biotech company, founded in 2024, has raised $34 million. That's nearly three times more than the next highest raise on $12 million by DC's HyperSpectral Corp.
At the same time many of the startups are pre-seed and have yet to raise any funding. 12 of the accelerator-attending startups reported $0 in funding, as did six of the no-accelerator startups.
University affiliations are more common on the coast
With so much innovation, not to mention entrepreneurship programming, coming out of the region's universities, it's not a surprise that almost one-third of the startups are affiliated with a university.
Philadelphia has the most university-affiliated startups in our dataset, with ten, but Baltimore is right up there with nine; Pittsburgh has the fewest, with four, and DC is right in the middle with five.
As noted with the data about the number of employees, university-affiliated startups may get bigger earlier and have opportunities to raise funds through networking and other university resources.

Recent grads get a chance to ‘impact millions' at Maryland IT department
For today's college graduates, the job market is far from stable. Tech hiring has slowed, and tariffs under the Trump administration have led to broader market uncertainty, making it harder for recent graduates to secure entry-level positions. Unemployment among 22- to 27-year-olds with degrees reached its highest level in more than a decade in April, excluding the pandemic. In this challenging environment, the Tysons, Virginia-based NobleReach Foundation is trying to help recent STEM graduates connect with public-sector opportunities through its scholars program. Earlier this month, the nonprofit announced its second class of 28 scholars, who will spend a year working with government agencies and mission-driven private sector partners across the country. The program focuses on four tracks of roles: artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, business process innovation and materials manufacturing. Rebeca Lamadrid, senior vice president of talent programs at NobleReach, described the program as a way to strengthen collaboration between industry and government while building a pipeline of talent for government roles. 'It is critical that our governments at every level are able to pick up and ensure that they're providing citizens the type of service delivery, the type of infrastructure that the current technology allows,' Lamadrid told 'All of that starts with people … and getting folks that may not necessarily think about the power of public service to be considering these types of job opportunities.' The inaugural class worked at federal departments and industry partners. This year the program expanded to include state and local governments. Lamadrid explained that the change allows the scholars' work to have a more direct impact on the public. 'It's a lot more tangible, the work that you get to do and how you get to impact millions of people,' Lamadrid said. Building the public sector pipeline Federal agencies cover their scholars' salaries, while some state and local partners receive grants from NobleReach to support their positions. The first class still has a few weeks left in its fellowship, some participants plan to continue working in government — even though federal constraints make it difficult for others to do so, according to Lamadrid. The program also offers professional development support, starting with a two-week bootcamp that covers frameworks such as human-centered design, which scholars can apply to solving public sector challenges. Pulkit Sharma and Thomas Thompson recently joined the scholars program. Sharma is a graduate of Mount Saint Mary's University, and Thompson graduated from Old Dominion University. Both will work as analysts on the team at the Maryland Department of Information Technology's (DoIT) Security Operations Center, a resource for state and local agencies to report cybersecurity incidents. The center shares its name and acronym with a descriptor for analysts doing similar work throughout the public and private sectors. For instance, Sharma previously worked as an SOC analyst at his university, but didn't consider state government opportunities before stumbling on the scholars program while job hunting. 'NobleReach really opened up my eyes,' Sharma said. 'Originally with cyber, I was looking at federal or private sector opportunities, but being able to really go deep into public service [at Maryland DoIT] is awesome, honestly.' Before joining the program, Thompson worked as a desktop support specialist at LCG, Inc, a technology consulting service. He enjoyed helping people with everyday challenges, such as setting up monitors or resetting passwords, and is excited to continue serving the public in his new role. 'The things I was doing weren't making a huge difference … but just to fill in those gaps of their daily lives and really make things easier for them was a gratifying moment,' Thompson said. Katie Savage, Secretary of the Maryland DoIT, emphasized that the program is mutually beneficial and underscores the importance of building a pipeline for future government talent. ' People don't always see government as a noble profession anymore,' Savage said. 'Oftentimes it can be seen as bureaucracy, but we have such power and deliver so many services.' Robots that work with humans, rather than replacing them? Young people are lining up to join PA's Precision Cobotics

After seeing over a thousand young people engage with his company's workforce development program, John Bridgen can't agree with a phrase he hears all the time: 'No one wants to work anymore.' As president of Lancaster-based robotics company Precision Cobotics, Bridgen says he sees proof of the opposite almost every day. His inbox is filled with inquiries from young people eager to join the company, drawn in by Robotics Worx, a program created to cultivate local talent. 'When you value people and it aligns with some of their interests, they're more than happy to be part of your workforce,' Bridgen told '[Companies] need to look inward as to why they're not somewhere people want to work.' Located next to the Lancaster airport, Precision is helping shape the county's emerging tech ecosystem. Once known primarily for its quiet farms and Amish communities, the region has recently seen a series of business wins. Bridgen gives a lot of credit to the Steinman Foundation and its spinout the Lancaster County STEM Alliance, which awarded Robotics Worx $50,000 in launch funding. 'We have all these cool companies here,' Bridgen said. 'How do we get the upcoming talent in the area to be aware of it so they don't leave?' Founded in 2022, Precision Cobotics helps manufacturers integrate robotics into their operations. The company started with a mission to be a 'lean integrator,' according to Bridgen, specializing in quick deployments for smaller manufacturing firms. Today, it works with Fortune 500 clients, including what Bridgen described as a top-three global automotive company, a major aerospace firm and a leading confectionery brand. He declined to name them due to non-disclosure agreements. While the company builds relationships with global corporations, it's gaining local recognition. The Lancaster Chamber of Commerce recognized Precision Cobotics with the 2025 Thomas T. Baldridge Catalyst Award for its efforts to enhance the region's economic vitality and community well-being — and to rebrand manufacturing for the next generation. 'You need people to deploy robots' to build out American manufacturing In collaboration with Millersville University, Robotics Worx integrates with several Lancaster school districts and technical colleges to offer students internships, apprenticeships and other educational opportunities that can help them break into advanced manufacturing. Traditionally, manufacturing has been seen as a dirty and potentially dangerous career path, Bridgen said, but with the rise of robotics, it's increasingly viewed as a tech-driven field. This reframe is also happening in other parts of the state, driven by government pushes like Southwestern PA's New Economy Collaborative and the state-led Manufacturing PA Initiative. 'It's ironic because people would say robots take jobs, but what we're finding is you need people to deploy robots,' Bridgen said. 'These young students get it, and it's kind of a great, timely solution to the needs of building out manufacturing in America.' Almost half of the participants in the Robotics Worx program are from demographics traditionally underrepresented in the workforce, according to Bridgen. The US manufacturing sector in 2020 was more than 70% male and nearly 80% white, according to the National Academy of Sciences. During this past year, more than 1,500 students participated in the program, with over 60 students landing internships and three students securing full-time positions in the industry, according to Precision Cobotics' most recent community impact report. Robotics as a 'sport' that captures student interest The company's mission to train the next generation of advanced manufacturing workers links to its roots as an intern-led endeavor at its inception. Back in 2018, a group of manufacturing companies that had been operating in the region for over 100 years started to notice trends in automation and manufacturing labor shortages and became interested in cobotics – a field of robotics focused on designing robots that work alongside humans rather than replacing them. So they put interns to work crafting cobotics solutions. 'They started using interns to test out solving problems within their own manufacturing businesses, relatively successfully,' Bridgen said. 'It's been really beneficial for me to get hands-on experience outside of the classroom.' Chris Shenberger, Student and Robotics Worx mentor When the company was founded and Bridgen joined in 2022, he brought experience as a coach for the FIRST Robotics program, a national nonprofit founded by inventor Dean Kamen. Bridgen saw how much grade-school students enjoyed solving problems and building things, and realized it could be a model. '[Kamen's] philosophy was all these kids are into basketball and other sports that don't really have much of a likely professional career path,' Bridgen said, 'so how do we make robotics, automation, programming, mechanical engineering — all these skills that the world has jobs for — a sport to capture people?' Those ideas, that interns can do great work and young people love solving problems, are still at the heart of the company. 'It's been really beneficial for me to get hands-on experience outside of the classroom,' said Chris Shenberger, a Millersville University student and former Robotics Worx participant who now mentors others in the program. 'And it's really meaningful to see how it helps other students, especially the high schoolers.' Looking ahead, Precision Cobotics is eyeing opportunities to expand with new automation centers, but all potential growth would need to be aligned with the company's team-first culture, according to Bridgen. 'We want to be purposeful and very intentional about how we grow, because our culture is such an important part of that, and we don't want to lose it,' Bridgen said. 'We need to make sure, as we experience success, we don't lose what really matters.'
