U.S. anglers fined for illegal fishing in northern Ont.
Three American men have been fined and two face fishing bans in Ontario after pleading guilty to violating provincial fishing regulations in northwestern Ontario.
The charges stem from a joint investigation by Ontario and Michigan conservation officers that started in August 2023, prompted by a YouTube video posted by one of the accused, Mathew Bilodeau. The footage, recorded on March 28, 2023, showed the group fishing for brook trout on Lake Nipigon during the closed season.

Guilty pleas and penalties
Kevin Murray of Midland, Mich., pleaded guilty to catching and retaining one undersized brook trout out of season. He was fined $2,000 and is prohibited from holding an Ontario fishing licence or engaging in any fishing activities in the province for one year.
Bilodeau, also of Midland, took a guilty plea to angling for brook trout during the closed season. He was fined $1,500 and received the same one-year fishing ban in Ontario.
Jame Miceli of Saginaw, Mich., pleaded guilty to angling for brook trout during the closed season and was fined $1,000 – but received no fishing ban.
Justice of the Peace Jerry M. Woods Jr. presided over the case, which was heard remotely in Thunder Bay on March 24, 2025.
Video evidence key to conviction
The court heard that the YouTube video showed Murray catching and keeping an undersized brook trout, while Bilodeau was also seen catching two undersized trout. Additionally, Miceli was recorded assisting in landing and measuring the fish.
Province stresses conservation efforts
In a recent court bulletin, the Ministry of Natural Resources emphasized the importance of adhering to fishing regulations.
'The Ontario government is safeguarding Lake Nipigon trout populations by ensuring fishing regulations are followed,' the ministry said Friday.

Indecent act charge laid in Sarnia
Sarnia police have laid an indecent act charge against a man in the city. On Saturday just after 10:14 p.m., the Sarnia Police Service was called to the Overflow Shelter on Exmouth Street after receiving a complaint that a man allegedly exposed himself. Police said they spoke to witnesses, who named the man, and showed them the area the incident took place. The SPS found and arrested the suspect at a nearby restaurant, where they said he was 'badgering customers in the drive through'. The 26-year-old of no fixed address was charged with indecent act and four counts of breach of probation. In the last year, since August 2024, the SPS have arrested the suspect 10 times, laid 17 breach of probation charges, five indecent act charges (of 32 total charges), and this incident marked the 40th incident with the police.

Three dead in Ontario cottage country, murder suspect still at large
Three people have died and a man is at large in Bracebridge Service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. [5005/500] It has been three days since Ontario Provincial Police responded to reports of gunfire north of Bracebridge. According to police, officers responded to the call shortly after 8 p.m. on Aug. 1, in the area of Beatrice Town Road. When they arrived on scene, police found a deceased male and a house fully engulfed in flames. A shelter-in-place was initiated around 9:30 p.m. as officers responded to a potentially armed individual in distress. The shelter-in-place was lifted early Saturday morning around 1:45 a.m. and there is no longer a threat to public safety. In a second update from OPP on Saturday, Aug. 2, police identified an individual wanted for murder. Twenty-nine-year-old Mitchell Gray from Bracebridge is currently wanted for murder. Police describe him as a white male, 5′8″ with light brown hair and facial hair. He was last seen on Friday, Aug. 1. In a statement to CTV News, Bracebridge Mayor Rick Maloney said, 'We appreciate the efforts of all our emergency services who responded to this tragic incident, especially our OPP. Our hearts and thoughts are with the family of the victims.' OPP remain tightlipped on the ongoing death and arson investigation and have not released any additional information. Police are asking anyone with additional information to contact the OPP or Crime Stoppers.
