Inn Fire forces evacuations in Mono City, closes Highway 395
MONO CITY – The Inn Fire in Mono County forced mandatory evacuations in Mono City and shut down Highway 395 ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
The fire broke out on Thursday around 3:30 p.m. and has burned 538 acres while jumping Highway 395 near Mono Lake. Crews said erratic winds caused the fire to spread quickly.
No containment has been reported.
The evacuation order, which is still in effect as of Friday afternoon, included an area stretching from Tioga Lodge to Mono Inn, north of Lee Vining.
An evacuation center was established at Bridgeport Memorial Hall on North School Street.
Highway 395 is closed from Lee Vining to Highway 167. It's unknown when it will reopen, as many people are expected to hit the road for the Memorial Day weekend.
Drivers can take Highway 167 if heading south, whereas northbound travelers can take Highway 6 in Bishop to avoid the closure.
Mono City is about 200 miles southeast of Sacramento on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It's home to about 300 people.
Mono Lake is one of the oldest lakes in North America and is more than two times as salty as the ocean.

California wagon train reenactors start yearly trek through Sierra Nevada
People heading up and back from Lake Tahoe will be in for a throwback sight along Highway 50 this week. The annual Highway 50 Association Wagon Train started its trek up and down the mountains Sunday. Now in its 76th year, the parade celebrates California's Gold Rush history with reenactors making the journey in period attire and transportation. The now-grand locale was originally founded as a riding stables and office space in 1946, then converted into a hotel. I'm a naturally tense person who has trouble really and truly relaxing for a whole hour without longing to check my phone (a depressing sign of the times, I know), but the intense pressure of this massage mixed with the dreamy, oh-so-Californian use of CBD left me feeling more physically rested than I have in months. I've become depressingly accustomed to not fitting in even the roomiest of complimentary hotel and spa robes, but the Bel-Air's robes and towels were deliciously king-size and seemed to keep the plus-size customer in mind (a little detail that goes a long way, especially in luxury accommodations where the clientele often skews very much straight-sized). I'm also used to massages that are mostly silent affairs, which made the massage I received from a therapist named Nadia additionally special; we chatted the whole time, although I got the vibe that Nadia most definitely would have respected the choice of silence. The Hotel Bel-Air tends to get quite understandably busy, so if you're not a guest, making a spa appointment well in advance of its 7 p.m. nightly closure is probably a good idea. That said, the spa has seven treatment rooms, making it unlikely that you'll even run into another soul during your stay. (You could be the last person on earth! But not in a The Last of Us way!) It would certainly be a challenge to book the spa's signature Bel-Air Couple's in time for Valentine's Day, but getting to enjoy a candlelit 'private aromatic bath' with your sweetie before a bespoke couple's massage sounds like possibly the most ideal way to celebrate true love, L.A.-style. Alberta Fire Threat Stabilizes as Rain Slows Some Blazes' Growth
Alberta's wildfire threat stabilized as rain slowed the growth of some blazes that have forced evacuations and shut about 7% of Canada's daily oil production. About 462,000 barrels of crude daily output in Alberta was within 10 kilometers of wildfires that are 10 hectares or larger early Tuesday, down from about 470,000 barrels at risk Monday, provincial data show. A total of 28 wildfires were burning out of control Tuesday in Alberta, the source of most of Canada's oil production.
