2 people rescued from Mokelumne River

( — Two people were rescued from the Mokelumne River Sunday night, according to the Amador Fire Protection District. Video Above: Metro Fire water rescue training Officials said Amador Fire and the Amador County Sheriff's Department responded to reports of two adults stranded in a raft around 7:45 p.m., near the shore of the Calaveras side of the river. Rocky terrain prevented access to the shoreline, resulting in rescue crews having to pendulum the raft and the victims with the use of a rope to a safer shoreline on the Amador side of the river, according to officials. Rescue crews were then able to use a rope rescue system to bring the victim up a 250-foot steep embankment. Crews reach 31% containment on Inn Fire According to officials, both people were safely pulled from the shore to the road. One person had minor injuries but is expected to be okay. The other person reported no injuries. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Evacuation order issued for some residents due to Inn Fire in Mono County

( — Residents in Mono County were asked to evacuate their homes on May 23 after a lawful order was issued due to the Inn Fire, which posed an immediate threat to life. Caltrans authorities stated they closed U.S. 395 from Lee Vining to Highway 167 because of the brush fire. Drivers were urged to detour around the closure. Southbound traffic will take Highway 167, while northbound traffic will use U.S. 6. The following locations served as evacuation shelters: Bridgeport Memorial Hall, located at 73 North School Street in Bridgeport Lee Vining Community Center, found at 296 Mattly Ave in Lee Vining. On Friday, fire officials reported the fire had reached 640 acres with 0% containment. By Sunday morning, the Nevada Type Three Incident Management Team Four announced that firefighters on the Inn Fire continued to make progress. The fire is now 15% contained, with efforts concentrated along the east side of Highway 395. On the northern edge of the fire, containment efforts began where the completed dozer line extends from the highway to the Mono Vista Spring area. This area is supported by ongoing construction and hose-laying operations to extinguish heat and create a secure perimeter, according to fire officials. On May 24, the Mono County Sheriff's Office downgraded its evacuation order from mandatory to advisory, allowing residents of Mono City and the Lundy area to return home, authorities reported. Power has been restored to affected communities. Officials reopened Highway 395 at around 8 p.m. on Saturday with one-way traffic control between Lee Vining and State Route 167 during the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Drivers are advised to use caution and be on the lookout for fire personnel and equipment working in the area. 'Fire behavior has been minimal, with creeping and smoldering observed throughout much of the day,' said fire authorities. 'While growth has slowed, smoke may still be visible, especially during warmer afternoon hours. Crews continue to build and reinforce the fireline, working in steep and rugged terrain to secure the fire's edge and perform mop-up operations.' Firefighters stated that there is still significant work ahead to increase containment in the area. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Inn Fire forces evacuations in Mono City, closes Highway 395

MONO CITY – The Inn Fire in Mono County forced mandatory evacuations in Mono City and shut down Highway 395 ahead of Memorial Day weekend. The fire broke out on Thursday around 3:30 p.m. and has burned 538 acres while jumping Highway 395 near Mono Lake. Crews said erratic winds caused the fire to spread quickly. No containment has been reported. The evacuation order, which is still in effect as of Friday afternoon, included an area stretching from Tioga Lodge to Mono Inn, north of Lee Vining. An evacuation center was established at Bridgeport Memorial Hall on North School Street. Highway 395 is closed from Lee Vining to Highway 167. It's unknown when it will reopen, as many people are expected to hit the road for the Memorial Day weekend. Drivers can take Highway 167 if heading south, whereas northbound travelers can take Highway 6 in Bishop to avoid the closure. Mono City is about 200 miles southeast of Sacramento on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It's home to about 300 people. Mono Lake is one of the oldest lakes in North America and is more than two times as salty as the ocean.
