The Hindu7 hours ago

The Ministry of Railways will implement a set of key changes to its passenger booking system from July 1, marking a significant shift in reservation protocols, charting timelines, ticketing security, and fare structures. Officials recently announced plans to hike specific fares. Moreover, passengers should be aware that Aadhaar-based OTP verification will become mandatory for Tatkal ticket bookings as of July 1, 2025.

Here are the significant changes passengers can expect starting July 1
AC waiting list cap increased from 25% to 60%: The cap on waiting list tickets for air-conditioned coaches has been raised to 60% of total berths, up from the 25% limit imposed earlier this month. The decision comes after passenger inconvenience and underutilisation of capacity were reported by zonal railways. Non-AC waiting list fixed at 30%: For non-AC sleepers and second-class coaches, the waiting list cap has been revised to 30% of total berth capacity. This balances demand while ensuring availability in the most heavily used segments. First reservation chart to be prepared 8 hours before departure: In a significant procedural shift, the first reservation chart will now be issued eight hours before train departure instead of the previous window of around four hours. This change is already being piloted on select trains and is now being extended more broadly. Aadhaar mandatory for Tatkal bookings: Starting July 1, all Tatkal bookings, online or at PRS counters, must be made using an Aadhaar-linked user ID. From July 15, an OTP sent to the passenger's Aadhaar-linked mobile number will also be mandatory to complete the booking. Agents restricted from Tatkal bookings for the first 30 minutes: To reduce bulk-booking and prioritise individual passengers, agents will be barred from booking Tatkal tickets for the first 30 minutes after the window opens each day. Minor fare hike on long-distance routes: The Railways have also announced a nominal fare increase—the first since 2020. Fares for non-AC Mail/Express trains will rise by ₹0.01 per kilometre, while AC fares will increase by ₹0.02 per kilometre. Suburban fares, tickets under 500 km in second class, and monthly season passes remain unchanged.
With these changes, the Railway Ministry aims to streamline bookings, ensure more equitable access to high-demand tickets, and prepare for the transition to a more robust, digital-first reservation ecosystem. Officials stated that all zonal railways and ticketing partners have been instructed to implement the changes uniformly as of July 1.

No more last-minute surprises: Indian Railways to release reservation charts 8 hours in advance

Starting July 1, Indian Railways is rolling out major changes to its ticketing system aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and passenger convenience. Among the key updates is a new rule: reservation charts will now be prepared eight hours before a train's departure, rather than the previous four-hour window. This move is expected to help waitlisted passengers by giving them more time to arrange alternate travel if their ticket doesn't get confirmed. For early-morning trains, charts will be prepared the previous night, offering greater clarity and reducing last-minute uncertainty. The Railway Board proposed the changes last week and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed their implementation "in a phased manner so that there is no disruption". The Railway Board is expected to announce the rollout plan shortly. In an official statement, the Ministry noted that the current system of preparing reservation charts just four hours before departure often leaves passengers uncertain about their travel status. By shifting the charting timeline to eight hours before departure, waitlisted passengers will receive updates much earlier. In addition to charting changes, the Ministry of Railways is also modernizing the Passenger Reservation System (PRS). A new high-capacity PRS is being developed by CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Systems) and is expected to be fully operational by December 2025. This upgraded system will be capable of processing 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute and handling 4 million enquiries per minute, a significant leap from current capacity. Another big change comes to the Tatkal ticketing system. From July 1, Tatkal bookings will require Aadhaar verification and OTP-based login, at least for the first 30 minutes of the booking window. This move is aimed at curbing misuse by agents and bots and ensuring fairer access for general passengers. The Railways has also indicated that more strict authentication protocols, like mandatory DigiLocker linkage, will be introduced later in July. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has stated that these changes are part of a broader effort to make the PRS 'intelligent, transparent, accessible and efficient.' Early pilot runs of these reforms in select zones have been successful, and the national rollout begins now.

Indian Railways Fare Hike To Be Effective From July 1; Check How Much Will Train Ticket Price Increase

Last Updated: Fares for non-AC coaches will rise by 1 paisa per kilometre, while AC classes will see an increase of 2 paise per kilometre. The Indian Railways is set to implement a nationwide passenger fare hike for second class passengers on long distance trains starting from July 1, 2025. This will be the first increase since the last fare hike in 2020. The maximum fare hike, Indian Railways stated, will be 2 paise per kilometre. Fares for non-AC coaches will rise by 1 paisa per kilometre, while AC classes will see an increase of 2 paise per kilometre. However, there will be no fare changes for suburban trains and ordinary second-class travel for distances up to 500 kilometre. For second-class journeys exceeding 500 kilometre, fares will increase by only 0.5 paisa per kilometre. Monthly season tickets (MSTs) will remain unaffected, providing relief to daily commuters. There will be no changes in fares for Monthly Season Tickets (MSTs) and Suburban train fares. Additionally, other charges like the reservation fee and superfast surcharge will remain unchanged. Other Changes In addition to the fare hike, Indian Railways will tighten rules for Tatkal ticket bookings. Starting July 1, 2025, only passengers who have completed Aadhaar verification will be allowed to book Tatkal tickets via the IRCTC website or mobile app. From July 15, 2025, an OTP-based Aadhaar authentication will become mandatory during the Tatkal booking process. This move aims to increase transparency and reduce fraudulent bookings. Indian Railways is also working on preparing the final reservation chart eight hours prior to a train's departure, replacing the previous norm of four hours. This significant shift aims to enhance transparency and passenger convenience. The move, currently under pilot testing, is expected to benefit waitlisted passengers by giving them additional time to make alternate plans if their tickets remain unconfirmed. Alongside the early charting initiative, Indian Railways plans to launch a modernised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) by December 2025. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the upgrade will streamline ticketing operations and enhance user experience. Once implemented, the upgraded PRS will be able to process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, marking a nearly fivefold increase from the current capacity of 32,000 bookings per minute.
