NYC Mayor Eric Adams, seeking to ramp up ground game, opens new campaign office in Brooklyn

NEW YORK — Mayor Eric Adams opened a new campaign office in Brooklyn Thursday, saying he'll use it as a base for his reelection team as they seek to shore up support for his reelection bid in the borough. 'This office here will be (manned) by dedicated New Yorkers, and thousands of New Yorkers will hit the streets, make phone calls, give our message out that has never been told,' Adams, who's facing a difficult path to reelection as an independent in November's mayoral contest, said outside the new office in Old Mill Basin. Nestled in between a smokeshop and a Chinese restaurant in a retail strip, the Avenue T storefront office is a bit remote, more than 3 miles away from subway connections. The sleepy, mostly residential southeastern Brooklyn neighborhood has a relatively small population. Adams, the former borough president, is looking to ramp up his ground game comes as he faces political headwinds in seeking a second term, especially in Brooklyn, where Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani made serious inroads in June's primary. Still facing fallout over the controversial dismissal of his federal corruption indictment, Adams' approval ratings are at historic lows while polls show him well behind Mamdani and Andrew Cuomo, who's also running as an independent in November. Adams' reelection team, meantime, was again denied millions of dollars in public matching funds this week because the Campaign Finance Board still believes he 'has violated the law.' 'Obstacles, bumps in the road, that's what a kid from Brownsville is used to,' Adams said when asked if he's frustrated by the CFB's latest matching funds denial, which his campaign has vowed to contest. 'My life has been bumps in the road, but I'm still here.' The office itself is housed in the headquarters of the Thomas Jefferson Democratic Club, an organization headed by Frank Seddio, a longtime Adams ally who used to be the Brooklyn Democratic Party boss. Inside the office, there were still signs Thursday the space is being used by the club, including framed portraits of Seddio and Meade Esposito, the group's late ex-boss. Adams is required to pay market rate rent for the space as it would otherwise amount to an illicit in-kind contribution. Adams campaign spokesman Todd Shapiro said his team is paying rent to the same landlord Seddio's club leases the space from, but wouldn't share how much they're being charged. _____ (With Graham Rayman.) _____

Toyota Hit With $9.5B Tariff Bomb--Profit Forecast Slashed as Trade War Bites

Toyota (NYSE:TM) just slashed its full-year profit forecast by a staggering 600 billion, now projecting 3.2 trillion in operating income through March 2026down from its earlier 3.8 trillion estimate. The downgrade follows a sharp 1.4 trillion ($9.5 billion) projected hit from newly imposed U.S. tariffs, which have sent tremors across the global auto sector. First-quarter operating profit came in at 1.17 trillionstill above consensus estimates of 890 billionbut down 11% year-over-year, with 450 billion of that decline tied directly to tariff impacts. The revised guidance lands below analyst expectations and marks Toyota's most detailed warning yet since tariffs took effect. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 3 Warning Sign with TM. Ford, GM, and Stellantis have also flagged steep tariff costs, but Toyota's projection stands out. Ford recently raised its own estimate to $2 billion, GM says it could be facing $45 billion in exposure, and Stellantis is bracing for a 1.5 billion impact. Among its Japanese peers, Toyota's numbers also outsize Honda's 450 billion, Nissan's 300 billion, and Subaru's 210 billion estimates. According to Bloomberg Intelligence's Tatsuo Yoshida, Toyota could be intentionally conservativebut he notes the company is actively working to revise supply chains for U.S.-bound vehicles. Meanwhile, a newly inked trade deal pegs the tariff at 15%lower than the feared 25%, but details on implementation are still unclear. Yet Toyota isn't standing still. Despite the turbulence, the world's top-selling automaker posted record global sales in the first half of 2025, delivering 5.5 million unitsa 7.4% jump over the same period last year, driven by strong demand for hybrids in Japan, the U.S., and China. Toyota is targeting full-year sales of 11.2 million units and has committed to building a new domestic plant in Aichi, set to begin operations in the early 2030s. While tariffs are pressuring short-term profits, Toyota's long game may hinge on how well it can adapt its supply chain and leverage surging hybrid demand to ride out policy volatility. Apple Maps gets natural language search in iOS 26 beta — what that means for your navigation

With the public beta for iOS 26 now available, more people are testing the new features coming to the iPhone—and it turns out there are some hidden iOS 26 tools that Apple didn't even announce. One that should make your Apple Maps experience better is the addition of natural language search via Apple Intelligence, one of the better AI tools coming to your iPhone. Spotted by 9to5Mac, Maps will get a new "Search the Way You Talk" option in Apple Maps that lets you use natural language for searches like 'Find cafes with free Wi-Fi.'" We did some testing of natural language search in Apple Maps and found that currently, it's a bit hit or miss. In one search we tried, "Parks with playgrounds" and Apple Maps did provide suggestions like "parks with a good rating" or "parks with boat ramps." However, not every test worked cleanly. Typing "24-hour diner" brings up results. But trying "all-night diner" brings back no results. So your natural language will vary. There are somethings that Apple may not have in its Maps data. Attempting "parks with restrooms" turned up zero results. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. From our testing, there are more natural search terms but as with everything in these betas, it is a work in progress. Apple never announced this feature was coming but apparently it's available now for beta testers. It may have even launched with the first iOS 26 public beta, and not the current iteration. I did check on an iPhone 16 Pro that has not been in the beta program, and could not find the natural language search there, so I do believe this is currently only an iOS 26 beta feature. Apple added natural language search to other iOS apps like Photos with iOS 18 and the introduction of Apple Intelligence. We tested it out then and were surprised by the results. "This is a much better approach to finding photos," my colleague Tom's Guide editor Philip Michaels wrote. Though he did caution that it too still felt like a work in progress.
