Act to be reviewed to safeguard Orang Asli rights
The Deputy Prime Minister said comprehensive studies are also being carried out to review existing aspects in the Act.
Citing early findings from the studies and engagements with Orang Asli leaders, Ahmad Zahid, who is Rural and Regional Development Minister, said several Orang Asli matters have been identified as requiring amendments.
This includes customary land matters, welfare, the management of customary marriages and also governance of traditional leadership in the Orang Asli community.
'I want to assure all that the rights of the Orang Asli community will be defended and improved. Engagements will continue until the amendments are tabled,' he said during Minister Question Time.
He also said a special meeting with the Orang Asli Development Council (MaPOA), will be held concurrently with the National Land Council and chaired by the Prime Minister.'
Ahmad Zahid said that the Act has not undergone any substantive revision since it came into force in 1954.
'The Act was established to prevent the Orang Asli's involvement in communist activities. The situation now is different as we must focus on education, welfare, infrastructure and the community's future.'
The Deputy Prime Minister also said the government is developing a comprehensive and inclusive Orang Asli Development Policy.
The policy is aligned with the Rural Development Policy alongside Malaysia's commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
He added that the policy will focus on seven strategies, which are land matters, education, healthcare, economy, leadership, infrastructure and culture.
He was responding to Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias (BN-Jelebu) who asked if the government intends to amend the Aboriginal Peoples Act to ensure the community's rights are upheld.

Negeri Sembilan allocates RM4.02m for Orang Asli development
SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan government has allocated RM4.02 million to the state Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) for community projects this year. Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias, State Rural Development, Plantation and Commodities Committee chairman, said the projects cover treated water supply, infrastructure, and social amenities. He added that the allocation also includes access roads, house construction, repairs, agriculture, and rural entrepreneurship programmes. 'Of the total allocation, JAKOA has so far committed and spent RM3,576,639 for Orang Asli community development,' he said. Jalaluddin noted that RM440,920 is pending ministry approval for project implementation. He stated that 90 per cent of JAKOA-recognised villages have access to basic necessities like water and electricity. 'The remainder that lack access are additional villages not gazetted as Orang Asli Reserves,' he told reporters recently. Jalaluddin assured that JAKOA remains committed to improving Orang Asli welfare through the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development. He also highlighted that some Orang Asli households prefer using clean hill water over piped supply to avoid monthly payments. – Bernama

No decision yet on Chinese new villages' Unesco nomination, further study needed, says Tiong
KUALA LUMPUR: The nomination of Chinese New Villages as a Unesco World Heritage site is under consideration, but a decision has yet to be reached, says Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing ( pic ). The Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister said that while his ministry is committed to protecting and recognising national heritage under the National Heritage Act 2005, the proposal to nominate Chinese New Villages requires further in-depth study. 'The ministry, through the National Heritage Department, believes that the nomination of Kampung Baru Cina in Malaysia as a Unesco World Heritage Site requires more comprehensive evaluation before proceeding,' he said in a parliamentary written reply on Wednesday (Aug 6). He was responding to a question by Wan Razali Wan Nor (PN–Kuantan), who asked about the government's position on the proposal and stressed the importance of preserving Malaysia's cultural and historical heritage. Tiong added that approval from the respective state authorities is necessary before the process can move forward, as land planning and development were the jurisdictions of the state governments. 'This involves several agencies at both federal and state levels, such as PLANMalaysia, the Land and Mines Office, and local authorities. Both the state authority and local authorities must also be prepared to comply with Unesco's stringent guidelines,' he said. To qualify as a Unesco World Heritage Site, Tiong said a nomination must meet stringent criteria, including the identification of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV), authenticity, integrity, and effective site management. 'The process of obtaining recognition can take more than 10 years, as seen with other sites in Malaysia, to ensure all necessary information meets Unesco's standards,' he added. On the government's efforts to ensure proposed sites meet national historical criteria, Tiong said the National Heritage Department conducts detailed research to verify facts and prevent potential issues. 'Among the department's responsibilities is ensuring that sites meet national historical criteria. This includes conducting thorough research to establish authenticity and verify facts, to avoid future confusion or disputes. 'Before any site is considered for gazetting under the National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645), it must first be reviewed by the Heritage Expert Committee and the National Heritage Council,' he said. In February last year, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming reportedly announced that plans were underway to nominate Chinese New Villages in Selangor as a Unesco World Heritage Site, in recognition of their cultural and historical significance.
