Bengaluru: For para-athlete
Simran Sharma
, the podium is more than just a place of celebration — it's a symbol of resilience, sacrifice and untapped potential.
Born prematurely with visual impairment, the athlete from Ghaziabad, battled systemic challenges, limited opportunities and social stigma to script a story of unwavering determination.
While she cherishes the pride of representing her country on the international stage, her voice carries a deeper appeal — for more domestic para-athletics meets.
It was just another day at office on Saturday as Simran clinched gold in the women's 200m run (T12) with a timing of 24.8s at the 7th Indian Open Para Athletics International Championship at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. But the Paris paralympic bronze-medallist rued missing out on breaking the Asian record. Speaking to TOI, the 25-year-old, who began racing professionally in 2018, said, "I wanted to break the Asian record but missed out!"

Encouraged by a select few to take up the sport professionally, Simran like several other para-athletes had to battle past the negativity to thrive as a sportsperson.
"At the start, I was unsure if I could do it. I was a girl and since I had problems with my eyes, people, including many in my family would tease me and call me names. I was scared for years. But in life, if 90% of people are negative, there's that 10% who always have your back and encourage you to go for it.
I concentrated on that 10%," recalled the Paralympian.
"Moreover, there are so many people working behind the scenes to help me succeed.

Credit must be given to them. They are the real pillars of success, because no one can do it alone. My husband (& coach) feels more pressure. More than me, they are unanswerable for my failure," said the Asian para games medallist.
Eight years into the sport, Simran rued the lack of competition in the country. "Athletes outside are regularly taking part in meets and that is a place where we are lagging. We need more meets in India.
In athletics you at least have a few trials to qualify, but in para athletics, we get only one chance for the final trial. There's nothing like – we can try next time for us. It rained here yesterday (Friday), and it hampered the chance for many to qualify for the Worlds," said Simran, who will next take to the track during the World Championships.
Clear of her goals, Simran said, "My goal is to get a gold medal for my country, and I want to start at the Worlds in Delhi. "Of course, the ultimate goal is the Olympics. LA is in my heart, mind and dreams! I was happy with my bronze in Paris but not satisfied. In LA, I will run for only gold," signed off a determined Simran.

IND vs ENG 5th Test: On-field drama peaks as Yashasvi Jaiswal clashes with Ben Duckett and earlier with Ollie Pope

Tensions are running high at The Oval as India intensifies their efforts to level the Test series, and the competitive spirit has started to flare on the field. On the morning of Day 4, Yashasvi Jaiswal was seen engaging in a verbal exchange with Ben Duckett , teasing him about toning down his usual aggressive batting style. Jaiswal reportedly said while fielding close-in, 'Come on, I want to see your shots. Play the sweep, reverse sweep. This is not your game.' Duckett didn't back down and fired back, 'Why should I listen to you?' Soon after, Shubman Gill also got involved, making it evident that the Indian side intended to maintain pressure with both their bowling attack and sledging. At stumps on Day 3, they were 50 for 1, having lost Zak Crawley to a pinpoint yorker from Mohammed Siraj on the last delivery of the day. Duckett, who resumed Day 4 on 34 not out, reached 55 before being removed by Prasidh Krishna. India's commanding position was anchored by another superb century from Jaiswal, who made 118, with crucial half-centuries coming from Akash Deep, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar. The visitors posted a total of 396 in their second innings, leaving England with a daunting task over the final two days—to either chase the total down or bat it out for a draw. Live Events Earlier in the day, just as the players headed in for the lunch break, tensions flared as Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope engaged in a heated exchange with Yashasvi Jaiswal. The moment unfolded after Crawley, who appeared to be limping in the final over—possibly attempting to run down the clock—provoked visible irritation from the England camp. Crawley, in particular, looked especially animated, continuing a pattern of verbal spats that began during the Third Test, where he and Shubman Gill had also exchanged words on the field. WWE SummerSlam 2025 Day 2 Full Predictions: Is John Cena losing the Title, The Rock ‘Final Boss' Arrival, and More

Images via WWE: Cody Rhodes, John Cena and The Rock Night 2 of WWE 's first-ever two-night SummerSlam promises nonstop action, headlined by John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes in a street fight for the Undisputed Title. Naomi defends her Women's World Title against Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky in a Triple Threat. Other major bouts include Solo Sikoa vs. Jacob Fatu in a steel cage for the U.S. Title, Becky Lynch vs. Lyra Valkyria in a last-chance no-DQ match for the Women's Intercontinental Title, and AJ Styles challenging Dominik Mysterio for the men's IC title. Plus, six teams clash in a chaotic 12-man TLC match for the Tag Team Championship. So, let's put on the predictions hat and see what can happen on Night 2 of SummerSlam 2025. WWE Championship Street Fight: John Cena (c) vs. Cody Rhodes This might be one of the most unpredictable matches WWE has booked in years. With John Cena halfway through his retirement tour, and doing it as a heel, there's real intrigue around how it all ends. Will he go out as the hero, turning face one last time as teased on SmackDown when he vowed to show the "real John Cena" at SummerSlam? Or is that all a mind game to throw Cody Rhodes off in the biggest match of his life? There's also a wild-card theory: Rhodes could shock everyone by aligning with a returning Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, turning heel in the process and fully embracing his role as his champion, but in a far darker way. This can come true, especially after he was seen wearing the same sunglasses The Rock once wore. Adding fuel to the fire, Rhodes recently hinted that the offer is still on the table, suggesting an alliance with The Rock could still happen. That said, it's still hard to see Rhodes losing to Cena again after already falling short at WrestleMania 41. One loss was believable and was a necessary step in helping Cena win his 17th WWE Championship. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like When Knee Pain Hits, Start Eating These Foods, and Feel Your Pain Go Away (It's Genius) Click Here Undo However, a second would chip away at the momentum Rhodes has built since toppling Roman Reigns and becoming the top 'babyface'. Creatively and from a business perspective, Rhodes is the clear choice. WWE has invested heavily in making him the guy, and now they need to double down. As for Cena, the focus should be on celebrating his final chapter. He can still deliver memorable moments without standing in the way of the future. Regardless of which path he takes, it seems likely that 'The American Nightmare' will walk out of SummerSlam as a two-time WWE Champion. The only question now is: which version of Rhodes will the WWE Universe get? Prediction- Cody Rhodes beats John Cena to win the WWE Championship Women's World Championship Triple Threat: Naomi (c) vs. Iyo Sky vs. Rhea Ripley After cashing in her Money in the Bank contract to close out Evolution 2, Naomi has dominated the Raw women's division, including her SummerSlam challengers, Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky. As the trio prepares to settle their rivalry in a Triple Threat match, Naomi enters as the unpredictable favorite, with many fans backing her to retain her Women's World title. Still, Ripley and Sky are top-tier babyfaces. Ripley, in particular, has never beaten Sky and will be hungry to change that. Triple Threats are especially risky for champions, as Naomi doesn't need to be pinned to lose her title. That said, Naomi thrives in chaos, as recently evident from her heel run. Her opportunism was visible in the brutal No Holds Barred match against Jade Cargill and the same-night cash-in, giving her the edge. If Ripley and Sky focus too much on each other, Naomi could easily sneak a win and continue her red-hot run. Prediction- Naomi retains her Women's World title against Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky No DQ, No Count-Out Women's Intercontinental Championship Match: Becky Lynch (c) vs. Lyra Valkyria This feud has elevated the Women's Intercontinental title, but it's time for Lyra Valkyria to get her crowning moment. 'The Lady Bird' has earned it and proved that she belongs among the elites. Therefore, she needs the win to cement her status as a star. Moreover, Lynch already has a singles victory over her at Money in the Bank, where Valkyria was forced to raise the Irishwoman's hand to admit that she is better. With the former multiple-time world champion at risk of becoming a nostalgia act, wrestling fans will be hoping that she puts Valkyria over. WWE can't afford to waste this opportunity and should capitalize on promoting a sure-shot mainstay of the women's division. Prediction- Lyra Valkyria beats Becky Lynch to win the Women's Intercontinental title Six-Pack TLC WWE Tag Team Championship Match This match could truly steal the entire show. After chaos erupted during Andrade and Rey Fenix's title shot on SmackDown, GM Nick Aldis made it official: a Six-Pack TLC Match for the WWE Tag Team Championships at SummerSlam. While teams like Fraxiom or Andrade & Fenix could earn their first title win, fans expect the Wyatt Sicks to retain. Every team in this match has either held the titles or been close, making SummerSlam the likely climax of the tag division's six-month chaos. Back at WrestleMania 41, the Street Profits won a classic TLC bout, only to lose the gold to the Wyatt Sicks on July 11. With just over 20 days as champions and only two months back on TV, it's too soon for the Wyatt Sicks to drop the titles. A loss now could stall their momentum and damage their standing in the tag division. So, it is important that they walk out of New Jersey as the title holders. Prediction- The Wyatt Sicks retain their SmackDown Tag Team Titles United States Championship Steel Cage Match: Solo Sikoa (c) vs. Jacob Fatu The Bloodline Saga is now in its 5th straight year and will see Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu clash in a Steel Cage match for the United States Championship at SummerSlam. It is surely a high-stakes rematch after Sikoa dethroned Fatu at Night of Champions with help from Tonga Loa and Talla Tonga. For the unversed, Fatu won the title at WrestleMania 40 against LA Knight, giving his former stable its first singles gold and sparking tension with Sikoa. Things unraveled quickly with Fatu losing trust in Sikoa and costing him the Money in the Bank ladder match. Now, with no allies allowed inside the cage, Sikoa faces his former brother-in-arms in a battle fueled by betrayal. And it seems that WWE will not risk taking off the title too soon from Sikoa, considering it is his first single belt on the main roster. But Fatu rarely loses in singles competition, and a surprise assist from Jimmy or even Jey Uso could shift the odds. Prediction- Solo Sikoa beats Jacob Fatu to retain his United States Championship Intercontinental Championship: Dominik Mysterio (c) vs. AJ Styles Intercontinental Champion Dominik Mysterio is set to defend his crown against AJ Styles in what has been a fun feud to begin with. Though 'Dirty Dom' blindsided Styles on the July 21 episode of RAW and were scheduled to face each other at Night of Champions, the two will finally settle things at SummerSlam. Despite Styles' recent buzz from his TNA Slammiversary appearance, Mysterio's momentum is stronger, especially after receiving a massive pop at AAA. Moreover, his in-ring skill and persona have improved considerably, so the promotion will likely back him to retain his crown. On the other hand, Styles is nearing the end of his in-ring career after signing a one-year WWE extension, and the IC title is the missing piece in the puzzle of his illustrious run. But Mysterio remains one of the hottest names in WWE, drawing heat or cheers wherever he goes. Simply put, a loss won't hurt Styles, but ending Mysterio's reign now would kill his momentum.
