Pennsylvania releases 2025 trout stocking schedule: what anglers need to know
HARRISBURG, Pa. — Anglers across Pennsylvania can start planning their spring fishing trips, as the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) has released its 2025 adult trout stocking schedule.
The schedule, now available online, provides stocking dates, locations, and species details for the 3.2 million trout set to be released into 691 streams and 130 lakes statewide.
'Anticipation is already beginning to build for the many spring fishing opportunities just around the corner here in Pennsylvania, and every angler can benefit from knowing when their favorite stream or lake will be stocked with trout, starting in just a few weeks,' Brian Niewinski, director of the PFBC's Bureau of Hatcheries, said. 'Whether you`re looking to volunteer to help stock trout, or you just want to plan ahead for statewide Mentored Youth Trout Day, Opening Day, or some early trout fishing along a special regulation water, reviewing the stocking schedule in advance will help set you up for a successful trip.'
Stocking begins the week of Feb. 17, with Pennsylvania's statewide trout season opening April 5. A single Mentored Youth Trout Day is set for March 29. Anglers should note that fishing is prohibited on designated Stocked Trout Waters between Feb. 17 and April 5, except for locations open to year-round fishing.
The PFBC will release approximately 2.4 million rainbow trout, 693,000 brown trout and 125,000 brook trout, with an average size of 11 inches. Additionally, 72,000 trophy-sized brood fish and 14,000 golden rainbow trout will be stocked throughout the season.
Several waterways have been added or extended in the 2025 stocking plan, including Caroline Lake in Bucks County, Mosquito Creek in Clearfield County and Harvest Fields Ponds in Centre County. Meanwhile, a lack of access has led to the removal of stocking at locations such as Riggles Gap Run in Blair County and Bald Eagle Creek in York County.
The PFBC welcomes volunteers to assist with stocking efforts. Individuals or small groups can participate without registration, but larger groups should coordinate with their regional law enforcement office.
Anglers ages 16 and older must have both a fishing license and a trout permit, which can be purchased online or at retailers statewide.

Fish detour provides easy passage at Pennsylvania State Park
NORTHCUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — Fish at Shikellamy State Park now have a detour to avoid dams. New naturalistic fish passages at the park will provide safe passage upstream for native species, such as American shad and eels, the Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resources said. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now 'Stewardship and conservation of our environment is the core of what DCNR does every day,' said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. 'You can see the results of our efforts in this fish passage, which is designed to function and look natural and help many kinds of life thrive in the river.' The inflatable dam at Shikellamy State Park creates the seasonal Lake Augusta — a 3,000−acre recreational pool. The new passageway is located on the dam's west end and is 900 feet long. It is constructed from boulders and rip rap, the department said, and includes resting places for the fish. With its construction, the passageway is one of the largest of its kind on the east coast, the department said. What's a pawpaw? 'Projects like this within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, with smart designs that invite fish to migrate up and down the river naturally, complement other habitat efforts statewide to benefit fish, anglers and everyone who appreciates healthy waterways in their own communities and hundreds of miles upstream and downstream,' said Tim Schaeffer, executive director of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. ‘I'm living my worst nightmare right now': Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas eyes 2026 Opening Day for return from injury
Casas ruptured his left patellar tendon running to first base in the second inning of a game against the Twins. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and had surgery two days later. Casas described the injury like being hit with a sledge hammer. 'As of right now, our goal is Opening Day next year,' he said. 'Just going to take it slow.' Advertisement Casas said he would spend the offseason in Fort Myers, Fla., rehabbing with team staff at Fenway South. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Casas played only 63 games in 2024 because of torn rib cartilage in his chest. This season was limited to 29 games. At 25, he's at a career crossroads. 'I had a lot of goals for myself this year that I'm not going to be able to accomplish. So back to the drawing board,' he said. 'I'll have a full off season to recover [and] get back to the caliber of player I hope on being.' Dr. Eric Berkson, the team orthopedist who did the surgery, told Casas that he should make a full recovery. Former major league pitcher Garrett Richards had a similar injury covering first base at Fenway Park while playing for the Angels in 2014. He returned to play in 2015 and pitched for the Red Sox in 2021. Advertisement He contacted Casas and offered advice based on his experience. 'He's been a big help to me mentally, walking me through everything that I was going to feel,' Casas said. 'So I'm really grateful for him and his messages, his kind words to me. He's been awesome.' With his left leg wrapped in a brace, Casas carefully made his way out to the field during batting practice and greeted some fans. He was wearing fingernail polish the same shade of green as the team's new alternate uniforms. 'I'm living my worst nightmare right now,' Casas said. 'This is the worst-case scenario for any type of player to go through a recovery that's double-digits months long. 'But going through it now, I feel like I'm going to be better because of it. It's just part of the game.' Peter Abraham can be reached at

Padres bring on quality veteran slugger to start 2025 MLB season
The San Diego Padres have given Jose Iglesias a roster spot to begin the 2025 MLB season. Padres: Jose Iglesias makes cut after competitive spring According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Iglesias will be on the Padres' 26-man roster on Opening Day (h/t The Sporting News' Aaliyan Mohammed). Iglesias was among a bevy of veteran talents that the Padres brought on in the offseason. He previously parted ways with the New York Mets after a stout 2024 campaign. Credit: Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images Last season, the 35-year-old hit an astounding .337 at the plate with 39 runs scored for the Mets. Iglesias was a playoff hero for New York, helping them reach the NLCS. Albeit, the Mets prioritized roster flexibility and cultivating their young talent over bringing the veteran slugger back for 2025. Now, he'll look to help San Diego win a World Series in the upcoming season. Iglesias will be an uber-efficient bat for Padres in 2025 Iglesias will give the Padres a reliable bat in the middle, or at the end of their batting order. San Diego has a wealth of elite sluggers atop their order that could be driven to home plate by the seasoned veteran. Iglesias will be an option to backup shortstop Xander Bogaerts, third baseman Manny Machado, or second baseman Jake Cronenworth. The Padres have much to look forward to, as he could be a game-changing presence for their Fall Classic pursuit. More must-reads:
