PA's Mentored Youth Trout Day returns, giving young anglers a chance to cast early
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — Young anglers across Pennsylvania will have a chance to cast their lines early as the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) hosts Mentored Youth Trout Day on Saturday, March 29. The annual event, running from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., allows anglers 15 and under to fish for trout alongside a licensed adult mentor at designated waters statewide. Created in 2013, Mentored Youth Trout Day gives young fishers a chance to learn key skills before the statewide trout season opener on April 5. Participants must have either a Voluntary Youth Fishing License ($2.97) or a free Mentored Youth Permit. They may keep up to two trout measuring at least seven inches. While adult mentors can assist, they are not permitted to keep trout. 'On this special day, the focus of every adult mentor should be on helping kids to fish, including teaching them how to bait a hook, cast a line, and hopefully, help them to safely reel in a few trout,' Richard Kauffman, PFBC District 8 Commissioner, said. Not all waters will be stocked ahead of the event. Anglers can check the PFBC's 2025 Trout Stocking Schedule on to locate stocked waters. Fishing licenses and permits are available through the HuntFishPA online portal and at nearly 700 in-person license agents. A voluntary youth license purchase helps fund fishing programs, with each sale generating about $5 in federal reimbursement for youth outreach efforts. For those fishing from a boat, Pennsylvania's cold-weather life jacket requirement remains in effect through April 30. Anglers in boats under 16 feet, including kayaks and canoes, must wear life jackets at all times. Pennsylvania releases 2025 trout stocking schedule: what anglers need to know
HARRISBURG, Pa. — Anglers across Pennsylvania can start planning their spring fishing trips, as the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) has released its 2025 adult trout stocking schedule. The schedule, now available online, provides stocking dates, locations, and species details for the 3.2 million trout set to be released into 691 streams and 130 lakes statewide. 'Anticipation is already beginning to build for the many spring fishing opportunities just around the corner here in Pennsylvania, and every angler can benefit from knowing when their favorite stream or lake will be stocked with trout, starting in just a few weeks,' Brian Niewinski, director of the PFBC's Bureau of Hatcheries, said. 'Whether you`re looking to volunteer to help stock trout, or you just want to plan ahead for statewide Mentored Youth Trout Day, Opening Day, or some early trout fishing along a special regulation water, reviewing the stocking schedule in advance will help set you up for a successful trip.' Stocking begins the week of Feb. 17, with Pennsylvania's statewide trout season opening April 5. A single Mentored Youth Trout Day is set for March 29. Anglers should note that fishing is prohibited on designated Stocked Trout Waters between Feb. 17 and April 5, except for locations open to year-round fishing. The PFBC will release approximately 2.4 million rainbow trout, 693,000 brown trout and 125,000 brook trout, with an average size of 11 inches. Additionally, 72,000 trophy-sized brood fish and 14,000 golden rainbow trout will be stocked throughout the season. Several waterways have been added or extended in the 2025 stocking plan, including Caroline Lake in Bucks County, Mosquito Creek in Clearfield County and Harvest Fields Ponds in Centre County. Meanwhile, a lack of access has led to the removal of stocking at locations such as Riggles Gap Run in Blair County and Bald Eagle Creek in York County. The PFBC welcomes volunteers to assist with stocking efforts. Individuals or small groups can participate without registration, but larger groups should coordinate with their regional law enforcement office. Anglers ages 16 and older must have both a fishing license and a trout permit, which can be purchased online or at retailers statewide.
