Hosts England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales will participate in qualifying for the 2028 European Championship, with only two spots reserved if they do not make it to the tournament, Europe's soccer governing body UEFA said on Wednesday.
The decision was taken by the UEFA Executive Committee which met in Bilbao ahead of Wednesday's Europa League Final.
The four hosts will be drawn into separate groups, with 12 group winners and eight best runners-up (20 teams) advancing directly to the final tournament.
"Two spots in the final tournament will be reserved for the two best ranked host nations who are not qualified as group winners or best runners-up after the completion of the qualifying group stage," UEFA said in a statement.
The remaining spots will be assigned via playoffs between the remaining runners-up in the qualifying groups and the best ranked 2026-27 UEFA Nations League non-qualified group winners, the statement said.
"Depending on the number of spots used by the host nations, the number of final tournament spots decided by playoffs may vary between two and four."
Euro 2028 will be held across nine venues in the United Kingdom and Ireland. REUTERS

Spurs women coach Vilahamn sacked after poor season
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Women's Super League - Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea - Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, Britain - May 4, 2025 Tottenham Hotspur manager Robert Vilahamn before the match Action Images via Reuters/Paul Childs/File Photo REUTERS Tottenham Hotspur have sacked their women's team coach Robert Vilahamn after the club finished 11th in the Women's Super League, the club said on Sunday. Just like the men's side this season, the women's team also finished one spot above the relegation zone, recording only five wins from 22 matches. Swedish coach Vilahamn had guided Spurs to sixth the previous year while they also finished runners-up in the FA Cup. But this season they suffered some heavy defeats by Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City, finishing the campaign without a win in their last 10 league games. "There have been some special moments during Robert's tenure, including reaching the FA Cup final for the first time," the club said in a statement. "However, results and performances this season have not been to the level we would expect and now is the right time to make a change. "We should like to thank Robert for his professionalism and efforts over the past two seasons, and we wish him well for the future." Vilahamn's departure comes two days after the club sacked men's team coach Ange Postecoglou. The Australian ended the club's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League but Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League. It was the first Grand Slam trophy for the second-seeded Italians, who also won the Paris 2024 Olympics doubles title on the same court last year. It was also 38-year-old veteran Errani's second title this week after also clinching the French Open mixed doubles title with compatriot Andrea Vavassori. The pairs traded breaks midway through the first set before the Olympic gold medallists, who had reached the final at the French Open last year, bagged it with another break at 5-4. Danilina, a 2022 Australian Open doubles finalist, and Krunic bounced back, easily earning the second set but they were broken twice at the start of the third as the Italians raced to a 5-0 lead. The Italians, sixth in the doubles rankings, wrapped up their first Grand Slam title as a pair when Krunic sank a forehand into the net. Paolini, who reached both the women's singles and doubles final at the French Open last year, had lost in the fourth round of this year's singles edition. Neymar tests positive for COVID-19, Santos say
Brazil forward Neymar has been sidelined after testing positive for COVID-19, his club Santos said in a statement as quoted by Brazilian media. The 33-year-old began showing symptoms on Thursday and was immediately removed from team activities. Medical tests later confirmed the viral infection, the Brazil Serie A side said on Saturday. The club did not disclose how long Neymar will be out of action and did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Neymar is already ruled out of Thursday's league match at Fortaleza through suspension. The Fortaleza match will be Santos' last outing before the Brazilian league pauses for the June 14-July 13 Club World Cup in the United States. The former Barcelona forward's future at Santos remains undecided, with his contract set to expire on June 30. Limited by injury, he has made 12 appearances for Santos across all competitions this season, contributing three goals and three assists.
