Cambodia thanks Malaysia for ceasefire efforts with Thailand
Malaysia dispatched a delegation to Cambodia yesterday, led by Malaysia's Chief of Defence Forces General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
'Cambodia expresses its deep appreciation to Malaysia, in its capacity as the current Chair of ASEAN, for its speedy dispatch of a delegation led by the chief of defence forces of Malaysia to Thailand and Cambodia.
'To discuss developing a detailed mechanism for the implementation, verification and reporting of the ceasefire,' Cambodia's Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said in a statement yesterday.
The Malaysian officials are in Phnom Penh to coordinate the implementation of the ceasefire and the restoration of normalcy in the border areas in northern Cambodia, which was gripped by armed confrontation since July 24.
Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to stop all military actions, effective from midnight on Monday, following a special meeting initiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The United States were the co-organiser of the meeting, with China being the observer.
'It is Cambodia's sincere hope that an impartial observer team tasked with monitoring, verifying, and facilitating the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire will be expeditiously set up, in accordance with the provisions of the special meeting held in Putrajaya,' said the statement.
The ministry said that Cambodia firmly rejects any misleading and fabricated accusations that distort the facts on the ground and threaten the fragile trust and dialogue essential for lasting peace.
'Cambodia reiterates that it has no intention, now or in the future, of breaching the ceasefire. Our primary goal is to ensure that peace not only prevails but endures, for the benefit of both nations and the stability of the entire region,' said the statement. - Bernama

Malaysia to lead Asean observer mission verifying Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will lead an Asean observer team tasked with verifying and ensuring the implementation of the ceasefire arrangement between Thailand and Cambodia. This follows the signing of the Arrangement on the Mechanism for the Implementation of the Ceasefire Arrangement Minutes during the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting at Wisma Perwira today, where both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the ceasefire reached at a special meeting on July 28. The document was signed by Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and Thailand's acting Defence Minister General Nattaphon Narkphanit. According to the agreement, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the ceasefire and agreed that their respective Regional Border Committees (RBCs) will implement the arrangement, which will be coordinated and observed by the Malaysian-led Asean team. The RBCs will meet regularly and submit reports to the General Border Committee (GBC) through their respective national chains of command. While the Asean observer team is being finalised, an Interim Observer Team (IOT) will be established, comprising defence attachés from Asean member states accredited to Thailand or Cambodia. The IOTs, led by Malaysia's defence attachés, will be formed independently in each country to observe the ceasefire implementation without crossing the border. Each IOT's composition will be determined by the host country in consultation with Malaysia. The teams will operate in close coordination with their respective RBCs and the GBC. Thailand and Cambodia also agreed to hold the next GBC meeting within a month, at a venue to be decided. Failing that, an extraordinary meeting will be convened immediately, following the same format as today's session, to address the ceasefire. Today's meeting followed a joint working group session between the two countries that had been ongoing since Monday, laying the groundwork for the GBC discussions. On July 28, Malaysia, as Asean chair, hosted a meeting involving Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayacha in Kuala Lumpur. Following the meeting, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the immediate and unconditional ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand marked the beginning of efforts to rebuild trust, confidence, and cooperation between the two countries. Tensions between the two Asean member states escalated on May 28 following a clash between troops in the Preah Vihear border area, reigniting a long-standing dispute over their 817km shared border. The fighting led to 15 deaths and displaced more than 100,000 people.

Asean leaders want Malaysia to continue as mediator in Thailand-Cambodia conflict
KUALA LUMPUR: All Asean member state leaders have agreed that Malaysia should continue playing the role of mediator to resolve the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had contacted all Asean leaders earlier on Thursday (Aug 7) morning before receiving a courtesy call from the Thai and Cambodian delegations in Kuala Lumpur for the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting at the Armed Forces' Wisma Perwira. Saifuddin Nasution said all Asean leaders or heads of state contacted expressed their support for Malaysia's role in mediating the conflict between the two neighbouring Asean countries. "All agreed that the current bilateral mechanism is sufficient for now, while also agreeing that there will be another round of discussions after today's meeting," he told a press conference after the meeting.
