Saudi Arabia's top diplomat lands in Syria in new sign of support

Yahoo31-05-2025
Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan on Saturday arrived in Damascus for cooperation talks, in a fresh sign of the oil-wealthy monarchy's support to Syria's new leaders.
Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, hosted a meeting in Riyadh between US President Donald Trump and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, marking the first encounter between the leaders of the two countries in 25 years.
During his trip to Saudi Arabia, Trump announced the lifting of all US sanctions on Syria.
Following his arrival in Damascus with a high-level economic delegation, bin Farhan met al-Sharaa and reiterated Saudi support for the war-shattered country.
During the visit, the Saudi officials will hold talks with their Syrian counterparts with the aim of supporting Syria's economy, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Bin Farhan said on Saturday in Damascus that Saudi Arabia and Qatar would jointly offer financial support for public sector workers in Syria. He did not give further details.
Last month, the two energy-rich Gulf countries said they would settle Syria's outstanding arrears with the World Bank Group, amounting to some $15 million.
Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been major supporters of Syria's new leadership since the fall of long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad in December.
Al-Assad, who governed Syria for more than two decades, was overthrown by an Islamist-led rebel alliance commanded by al-Sharaa.
Syria's new leadership has since sought to garner world recognition and economic support to rebuild the country.

Syria's Sharaa hopes for Kurdish deal to prevent conflict

By Suleiman Al-Khalidi AMMAN (Reuters) -Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has expressed hope that his country would avoid military conflict with U.S.-backed Kurdish forces if efforts to integrate their autonomous administration in northeast Syria into the state structure collapse. In remarks late on Saturday to senior figures from Idlib, where he has mustered loyalist forces, Sharaa said Kurdish leaders had signalled readiness to move forward with a landmark deal in March to bring their Kurdish-run areas under state authority. But their actions on the ground suggested otherwise, he told the publicised forum. 'At times on the ground there are signals opposite to what they say in the negotiations,' Sharaa said. Turkey and Washington, the main powers backing the deal to integrate Syria's oil-rich northeast into the state, wanted to resolve the issue peacefully, Sharaa said. "These parties are pushing for a solution peacefully. I hope we don't enter into a dispute. I am hopeful in a few months we will resolve it," he said. The collapse of follow-up talks since the March deal has escalated tensions in the region, triggering fresh clashes this month between government troops and the Kurdish-led, U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The SDF, which controls parts of northeast Syria where Arabs form a majority, has recently fortified extensive tunnel networks along the frontlines. Many tribal Arabs accuse the SDF of discriminatory policies - claims Kurdish officials deny. CONCERN OVER MAJOR ESCALATION Turkey-backed rebels have also reinforced their positions amid concerns over a potential large-scale escalation in hostilities, officials say. Ankara has warned of military action against the SDF, whichit considers a terrorist organisation and has targeted in pastcross-border operations. It expects the Syrian government toaddress its security concerns but says it reserves the right tomount an offensive if needed. U.S. envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack - an advocate for a strong, unified Syrian state - voiced concern last month over Kurdish delays in implementing the March deal, urging faster progress. Authorities in Damascus reacted earlier this month angrily to a recent SDF conference calling for greater decentralisation and which demanded a review of a constitutional declaration it said discriminated against minorities, a move officials said threatened Syria's territorial integrity. Syrian officials said any military push against the SDF would rely on Turkish-backed factions operating in northern Syria, adding that Ankara has grown impatient with what it sees as Kurdish foot-dragging. Sharaa said those who sought partition were 'dreaming' and insisted the country would not give up any stretch of territory. He also criticised Druze groups seeking support from Israel in their confrontation with Damascus. Thousands joined a large Druze protest in Sweida on Saturday, demanding self-determination, hoisting Israeli flags and praising Israel for a military intervention that forced Syrian forces to retreat after hundreds of people were killed last month. Sharaa acknowledged that 'violations' had been committed by security forces and army personnel in Sweida, but said Druze militias had also perpetrated crimes. Solve the daily Crossword

Revealed – Wage Offer From Saudi Club Neom To Inter Milan & France Star

Saudi Pro League club Neom are ready to offer Inter Milan defender Benjamin Pavar wages of €8 million net per season. This according to today's print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. Recent reports have suggested that Inter are ready to sell Benjamin Pavard. Inter signed Pavard two years ago from Bayern Munich. And the France international has certainly had his part to play, helping the Nerazzurri to the Serie A title in his first season at the club. But perhaps Pavard, who turns thirty next season, is not in line with the future of Inter's project. The likes of Galatasaray and Lille have shown an interest. And it is not just these European clubs who have reportedly identified Pavard as a target. From the Saudi Pro League, Neom have also reportedly emerged as suitors for the 2018 World Cup winner. Neom Ready To Offer Inter Defender Benjamin Pavard €8M Net/Season MILAN, ITALY – APRIL 16: Benjamin Pavard of FC Internazionale applauds the fans as he warms up prior to the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Quarter Final Second Leg match between FC Internazionale Milano and FC Bayern München at San Siro on April 16, 2025 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by) According to Tuttosport, Galatasaray and Lille would struggle to meet Inter's asking price for Pavard. The Nerazzurri certainly aren't going to let the Frenchman leave for less than €20 million. That is the amount that Inter would need to bring in to avoid taking a capital loss. However, Neom would have no trouble paying that amount for Pavard. Meanwhile, the Saudi club are also prepared to put big wages on the table to tempt the player himself. They are reportedly offering around €8 million net per season.

Report – Inter Milan Slap €20M Price Tag On Galatasaray, Lille & Neom Target

Inter Milan have reportedly slapped a price tag of €20 million on Galatasaray, Lille, and Neom target Benjamin Pavard. This according to today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. Recent reports have suggested that Inter are ready to sell Benjamin Pavard. The likes of Galatasaray, Lille, and Saudi Pro League side Neom have all shown an interest. Inter signed Pavard two years ago from Bayern Munich. And the France international has certainly had his part to play, helping the Nerazzurri to the Serie A title in his first season at the club. But perhaps Pavard, who turns thirty next season, is not in line with the future of Inter's project. Inter Milan Want €20M For Galatasaray, Lille & Neom Target Benjamin Pavard SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – JUNE 20: Benjamin Pavard of FC Internazionale Milano faces the media during the Training/Press Conference ahead of their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 match between FC Internazionale Milano and Urawa Red Diamonds at Virginia Mason Athletic Center on June 20, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by) The key question would be what kind of fee Inter would want for Pavard. The Nerazzurri signed the Frenchman from Bayern Munich in 2023. They paid a fee of around €35 million to bring him in. According to the Corriere dello Sport, though, Inter would be willing to sell Pavard for considerably less than that. The Nerazzurri would not, however, be willing to take a capital loss on the 29-year-old defender. Therefore, the Corriere report, Inter's asking price is right around €20 million.
