Germany soccer federation fined for tax evasion related to pre-2006 World Cup payment to FIFA
BERLIN (AP) — The German soccer federation has been convicted of tax evasion related to the awarding of the World Cup hosted by the country in 2006.
A regional court in Frankfurt fined the federation, known by its German acronym DFB, 110,000 euros ($128,000) at the culmination of the nearly 16-month trial on Wednesday.
Prosecutors had been pushing for a larger fine after accusing the DFB of failing to pay approximately 2.7 million euros (now $3.1 million) in taxes related to its payment of 6.7 million euros ($7.8 million) to FIFA, world soccer's governing body, in April 2005.
That payment settled a loan that Germany great Franz Beckenbauer, the head of the World Cup organizing committee, had accepted three years earlier from Robert Louis-Dreyfus, a former Adidas executive and then part-owner of the Infront marketing agency.
The money was channeled through a Swiss law firm to a Qatari company belonging to Mohammed Bin Hammam, then a member of FIFA's Executive Committee. The exact purpose of the money remained unclear.
The DFB concealed the repayment of the loan as a contribution toward a planned World Cup opening gala, which was later canceled, and falsely declared it a business expense a year later.
Former DFB officials Theo Zwanziger, Wolfgang Niersbach, and Horst R. Schmidt were originally charged in the trial. The proceedings against all three, who consistently denied the allegations of tax evasion, were eventually dropped upon payment of fines.

MIAMI (AP) — FIFA has opened a disciplinary case at the Club World Cup after Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger claimed he was racially abused by Pachuca captain Gustavo Cabral. Rüdiger, who is Black, and Cabral clashed in the final minutes of Madrid's 3-1 win Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina. After the German player spoke to referee Ramon Abatti, the Brazilian match official made the FIFA-approved signal with raised arms crossed to start an anti-discrimination protocol. FIFA confirmed late Tuesday it is formally investigating. 'Following an assessment of the match reports, the FIFA disciplinary committee has opened proceedings against Pachuca player Gustavo Cabral in relation to the incident involving him and Real Madrid's Antonio Rüdiger,' the soccer body said. A verdict is likely before Pachuca plays Thursday in its final Group H game, against Al Hilal in Nashville. It will be Pachuca's last game at the Club World Cup because the Mexican team cannot finish higher than third in the standings and will not advance to the round of 16. Trump celebrates ‘great victory' at NATO summit as allies promise spending increase
US President Donald Trump expressed a friendly tone toward NATO allies. NATO members agreed to increase military spending. NATO chief Mark Rutte praised Trump. US President Donald Trump struck a conciliatory tone toward NATO allies on Wednesday, framing an expected deal on increased defence spending as a 'great victory for everyone' at their summit. Everything has been carefully choreographed at the gathering in The Hague to keep the volatile US president on board: From chopping back the official part of the meeting to putting him up overnight in the royal palace. The strategy seemed to be working - for now - with Trump seeming keen to share the plaudits for a deal set to see the 32 countries commit to spending 5% of output on defence by 2035. 'It's a great victory for everybody, I think, and we will be equalised very shortly, and that's the way it has to be,' said Trump, as European allies seek to catch up with US spending on defence. 'I've been asking them to go up to 5% for a number of years, and they're going up to 5%... I think that's going to be very big news,' he said. Hosting the meeting, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told reporters that Trump was in an 'excellent mood' at the dinner hosted on Tuesday by King Willem-Alexander in his royal palace, and that the US leader appeared inspired by his hosts. 'The day begins in the beautiful Netherlands. The King and Queen are beautiful and spectacular people. Our breakfast meeting was great!' he posted on the Truth Social network. Entering the meeting, leaders lined up to declare the summit's planned spending hike as 'historic'. NATO allies say the increase is needed to counter a growing threat from Russia but also to keep Trump engaged, with the US leader long complaining that Europe spends too little on its own defence.
