Scary scenes as ice hockey star cut by rival's skate
NHL star William Eklund is on the mend after suffering a gruesome cut to his arm during an international friendly on Saturday.
Eklund, who plays for the San Jose Sharks and Sweden, was involved in a tussle with Czech player Filip Hronek during their clash ahead of the upcoming World Championships.
The two players were contesting the puck next to the wall behind the Czech goal when Hronek's left leg flicked up and his skate made contact with Eklund's arm.
Eklund immediately dropped his stick and skated towards the bench in serious discomfort.
He could be seen grabbing his wrist and screaming as medics quickly rushed to provide assistance. William Eklund's arm was cut by a rival's skate in a scary incident. Credit: X
The 22-year-old was taken to hospital for further assessment.
'He's stable,' Todd Diamond, Eklund's agent, told San Jose Hockey Now.
'Looks like it didn't cut key tendons or nerves at the moment.'
Eklund later shared an update on Instagram saying 'everything is fine', along with a photo of his arm bandaged up. Eklund shared an update on social media. Credit: Instagram
It remains to be seen how long he will be sidelined for.
The World Championships begin next Friday in Stockholm, Sweden and Herning, Denmark.

Hailee Steinfeld shares details from her wedding
Hailee Steinfeld carried a single crystal rose instead of a traditional wedding bouquet. The 28-year-old actress married Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen last month and now the couple are home from their honeymoon, the Sinners star has shared some of the details from their big day in Santa Barbara, California. She wrote in her Beau Society newsletter: 'Instead of a bouquet, I held one single crystal rose. Suffice it to say, it was perfect — the whole entire thing. The next day, Josh and I ran off into the sunset to our honeymoon. … Now we're back, and it's been a whole 13 days of being married, and we'll be staying on this high forever!' The 29-year-old sportsman - who wore a custom Tom Ford tuxedo - was left "stunned" when he saw his bride for the first time in her custom Tamara Ralph strapless mermaid-style wedding gown. Hailee wrote: 'Josh says we have to talk about my dress now because I 'stunned' him when I got to the altar. It's easily the most perfect gown I've ever put on my body. 'It's easily the most perfect gown I've ever put on my body. Tamara Ralph designed it custom for me. Her tailoring is exquisite. 'We were on the tightest timeline. Six weeks before the wedding, my mom and I flew to Paris straight from the Sinners premiere in London for the fitting. I really had to lean into the whole 'trust the process' thing and thank God for Rob, Mariel, Tamara and her team for pulling it all together in time.' "On our wedding day, when I put on this dress, I actually lost my breath. I've never felt more like myself and more beautiful.' Josh recently gushed that he made "the right" decision in marrying Hailee. When asked about his achievements in 2025, Josh told reporters at a press conference earlier this month: "They've all been big. None other than marrying my best friend. "She makes everything easier. I don't really focus on the other stuff, that was the most important decision I'll make in my life, and I made the right one." The couple were first linked romantically back in 2023 and went on to announce their engagement in an Instagram post last November before tying the knot in Malibu on May 31. The pair previously opened up about their engagement with Hailee revealing the NFL star's proposal caught her by surprise. Asked if she suspected that Josh would pop the question, the Sinners star told Who What Wear: "Oh my God, no! You talk to your girlfriends about that, right, where you're like, 'I just don't want to know'." She added of the proposal: "It was magical. That's the word."

Panthers purr, close in on consecutive Stanley Cups
Brad Marchand has scored twice, Sam Bennett had his NHL playoff-leading 15th goal and the Florida Panthers moved to the verge of a second consecutive Stanley Cup title by beating the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 in Game 5. The Panthers improved to 10-3 on the road this playoffs. They can hoist the Cup again as soon as Tuesday night if they win Game 6 on home ice in Sunrise. Florida this time built a multigoal lead on Saturday night and built on it, unlike a couple of previous games in the final. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced and was aided by lockdown defence that took ice away from the Oilers. Marchand, Bennett and Sam Reinhart provided the offence. Marchand joined Mario Lemieux as the only players in the past half-century to score five-plus goals in a final multiple times, and his 13 career goals in the final are the most among active players. Connor McDavid scored his first goal of the series after the Oilers fell behind 3-0. Reinhart's came 46 seconds later to restore the Panthers' three-goal lead, and by the time Corey Perry scored with 3:13 left, it was too late. Eetu Luostarinen sealed it with an empty-netter with 1:19 left, silencing the once fired-up crowd for a final time. "Yeah, we've been pretty good at bouncing back all playoffs," Marchand said after his side responded to squandering a 3-0 lead in Game 4. "We learned a pretty good lesson last game." Calvin Pickard lost for the first time in eight starts this spring, allowing four goals on 18 shots. He got the nod over Stuart Skinner after entering in relief and winning Game 4 to improve to 7-0, a record that is now 7-1. Skinner could be back in for Game 6, with the Panthers aiming to close things out following another cross-continental trip back to the other corner of North America.
