Stumptown a worthy favourite
The shortest-priced horse was once considered one to avoid in the Grand National – and only 12 favourites or joint-favourites have won in 77 renewals of the race in the post-war era.
However, three of those favourites have triumphed in the previous five Nationals, including each of the past two years, modifications to the fences and field size making the race less unpredictable.
Pre-race favourite STUMPTOWN therefore deserves attention and has the pedigree to back up his status. For one, the eight-year-old gelding is trained by Gavin Cromwell, who recently enjoyed Gold Cup success with Inothewayurthinkin.
Stumptown has won his last four races, his latest victory coming over 3m 5½f in the Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. The unique fences of the cross-country course at Prestbury Park, where Stumptown also won on his penultimate start last December, help to make it a good indicator of success at the Grand National, as Tiger King proved by winning both races in 2018 and 2019.

At a slightly bigger price is INTENSE RAFFLES, the Tom Gibney-trained winner of the Irish Grand National last year. Jockey JJ Slevin was on board for that victory and will once again take the reins at Aintree.
Since that win the grey has had a couple of uninspiring performances at Navan, but he bounced back with an impressive second-placed finish in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse on his last outing.
This is a horse whose season has clearly been mapped out with the National in mind and he could be hitting form at the right time.
There is a concern that Intense Raffles' past successes have mainly come on soft ground – conditions we are unlikely to see at Aintree – but the course should be watered sufficiently to ensure that this is not a major issue.

Zack Wheeler's Phillies teammates react after shocking diagnosis out of the blue: 'It's scary, we're praying for him'
The Philadelphia Phillies are rallying around starting pitcher Zack Wheeler, who now faces a disturbing diagnosis. Wheeler has been diagnosed with a 'right upper extremity blood clot' and will be placed on the 15-day injured list by the team. The news was delivered by general manager Dave Dombrowski and head athletic trainer Paul Buchheit in Washington, DC after the Phillies fell to the Nationals 2-0. 'There's not a whole lot we can say on it at this time,' Dombrowski said, 'but I commend Paul and the doctors for finding this because it could've been a much more trying situation than what it is.' Buchheit confirmed that the clot is located in Wheeler's throwing shoulder. Wheeler initially had a start in August pushed back due to shoulder soreness before making two on-schedule appearances. But, he noticed a decrease in his velocity and only tossed five innings on Friday night against Washington. 'Zack had been feeling better after his right shoulder soreness, but yesterday some symptoms had changed,' Buchheit said. 'He felt a little heaviness. The doctors here were great in helping to diagnose and expediting that diagnosis this morning.' No definitive prognosis has been reached and doctors don't believe the clot was responsible for his previous shoulder soreness. Wheeler us set to be evaluated in Philadelphia next week. His Phillies teammates are all concerned and reacted with worry to the jarring news. Fellow starter Taijuan Walker said, 'It's obviously scary. ... Obviously, we're praying for him, trying to keep in contact with him. But I know that he knows we're all here for him.' 'I shot him a text,' said star slugger and NL MVP front-runner Kyle Schwarber. 'Sounded like everything was getting the tests done and things like that. It's a scary situation, right? … Just want to get him back in here and hear from him. 'Hopefully, it's not anything too serious. I don't know what the prognosis is going to be or what they're going to have to do. I don't know if it's surgery. 'I don't think anyone knows right now. … But get him in here and get him healthy. I think that's the biggest thing. 'Baseball is baseball. When it comes to someone's health like that, we need him healthy first. He's got a family, so we want to get him feeling good for them and get him back to speed whenever we can.' It also throws a wrench in the plans of manager Rob Thomson to run a six-man starting rotation. But that's not the main thing on his mind at the moment. 'We don't know the timeline,' Thomson said. 'I'm thinking a lot about Zack and his family because it's not a hamstring injury or something like that. But I feel good about the depth that we have. If we have to go to a (six-man rotation), it could be (Andrew) Painter, it could be somebody else. We've just got to carry on. People have to step up.' Wheeler signed with Philadelphia in December 2019 and has been a star for them ever since. He's posted a record of 69-37 and averaged a 2.91 ERA in his time in the City of Brotherly Love. So far this season, he has an ERA of 2.71 and a record of 10-5.

Phillies welcome back Aaron Nola in finale vs. Nats
August 17 - The Philadelphia Phillies expect to welcome back one of their star pitchers on Sunday, a day after they placed another on the injured list. Aaron Nola will make his long-awaited return to the rotation on as the Phillies vie for a split of their four-game series against the host Washington Nationals. Nola (1-7, 6.16 ERA) is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list to make his first start with Philadelphia since May 14. The right-hander went on the injured list two days later with a sprained right ankle, and then dealt with a stress fracture in his right rib cage. Nola fared well in his third rehab outing with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, striking out 11 batters in 5 2/3 scoreless innings on Tuesday in Buffalo, N.Y. "It felt good to get the pitch count up a little bit and get back in the sixth inning," Nola said, per the Philadelphia Inquirer. "The arm feels great; the ankle feels good. I'm glad to be able to finally get back on the field and catch and throw normally. I'm just excited to get back on the mound again for these guys and give them a chance to win again." The National League East-leading Phillies would like that very much, given that they lost for the fourth time in five games with a 2-0 setback to Washington on Saturday afternoon. Philadelphia was unable to solve Cade Cavalli, as the latter tossed seven scoreless innings to pocket his first win of his career. James Wood slapped a two-run double with two outs in the fifth inning to provide all the offense that Cavalli would need. Shortly after that defeat, the Phillies announced ace right-hander Zack Wheeler is headed to the 15-day injured list due to a blood clot in his right arm. There is no timetable for his return. Phillies place ace Zach Wheeler (blood clot) on IL
August 17 - The Philadelphia Phillies placed three-time All-Star pitcher Zach Wheeler on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a blood clot located near his right shoulder. The news came from Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski less than 24 hours after Wheeler allowed two runs on four hits over five innings in Friday's 6-2 win over the Nationals. "There's not a whole lot we can say on it at this time," Dombrowski said after Saturday's game. "But I commend (the medical staff) for finding this because it could've been a much more trying situation than what it is." Wheeler has been an All-Star in back-to-back campaigns. In six seasons with the Phillies, the right-hander has posted a 69-37 record with a 2.91 ERA and 1,094 strikeouts to 220 walks over 979 innings. This season, he has made 24 starts, recording a 2.71 ERA and NL-best 0.935 WHIP. 11-year veteran Aaron Nola is set to be activated from the 60-day IL on Sunday. He will take over the vacant spot in the five-man rotation.
