No football on Boxing Day in the 2025-26 Premier League. Will that really be the case?
Fixture release day is when the first plans can be made for a new season and this morning brought the opportunity for supporters of the 20 Premier League clubs to map out how the next 11 months might look. The unmissable derbies, the reunions and the weekend getaways… but no Boxing Day game. All fixtures in round 17 of the season have initially been scheduled for December 27 by the Premier League, leaving the much-loved Boxing Day slot without a single fixture to its name. The end of an era for English football? Not quite. The Athletic looks at what might happen. Tradition, largely. Christmas Day saw men's professional matches being played in England until the 1960s, serving up entertainment to workers across the country on a public holiday. Boxing Day have been another social outlet and in England, fixtures on December 26 have remained hugely popular despite other European leagues coming to enjoy their winter breaks. Advertisement Games played the day after Christmas typically command some of the biggest attendances in any club's season, despite limits to public transport. Spikes are consistently seen, particularly in the English Football League (EFL, tiers two to four in the men's footballing pyramid), as supporters seek a football fix over the holiday period. It's not a straightforward answer, so bear with us… The Premier League season is now effectively made up of 33 weekend rounds and five midweeks, a rigid allocation that is agreed as part of a wider scheduling challenge involving the domestic competitions, such as the FA Cup and League Cup, and those in Europe, namely the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. That 33 + 5 make-up is how the Premier League then sells its five rights packages to domestic broadcast partners and next season, there is the quirk that December 26 is a Friday, so it will be considered part of a weekend round. That was not the case last season. The 2024-25 campaign saw Boxing Day fall on a Thursday, ensuring the round of fixtures that followed on December 29 was instead regarded as the weekend round. That meant all 10 games were originally scheduled for Boxing Day, with eight remaining there and two played the following day. Next season will be different, with the Premier League committed to allowing at least 48 hours between teams playing games over the festive period. No. The traditionalists can breathe easy for now. The Premier League's statement accompanying the 2025-26 fixtures included the line that 'matches in round 18 (December 27) are available for movement to Boxing Day for live broadcast selection', so be sure that some games will be brought forward to satisfy the wishes of TV viewers. Last season, Prime Video held the rights for the round of fixtures that immediately followed Christmas but Amazon, which began streaming Premier League games in 2019, has come to the end of its broadcasting deal. This season, Sky Sports and TNT Sports will share the rights. As with any weekend round of games, Sky and TNT will have their picks of who to televise in those Boxing Day slots. As many as four games could be broadcast at staggered points across the day. This, though, is still the first time the Premier League has not included plans to stage games on Boxing Day at the point of fixture release. In theory, October 15. The Premier League usually gives at least six weeks' notice before any game is moved for television coverage, with what it calls 'provisional' deadlines in place at staggered points of the season. The first of those, for example, is July 9, when dates for the opening six rounds of the campaign will be locked in. Advertisement The Premier League, though, envisages complications in 2025-26. Nine English clubs will feature in UEFA's three European competitions next season, including six in the Champions League. Teams due to play on a Tuesday cannot be televised on a Sunday and clubs featuring in either the Europa League or Conference League on a Thursday night will predominantly play on Sundays. The Premier League warns this 'will come with an impact on the scheduling of league matches'. Next season begins a new domestic broadcast cycle and that will ensure more games than ever will be televised to a UK audience. The Premier League justifiably called it the 'largest sports media rights deal ever concluded in the UK' when signing off in December 2023, worth £6.7billion over four years. Sky and TNT, the two longest-serving broadcast partners, expected more bang for their buck and that resulted in the Premier League giving the green light to up to 270 of the 380 games played each season being televised. The previous arrangements allowed for 200 fixtures to be shown but the new deal now means any game kicking off outside of the Saturday 3pm blackout can be televised domestically. That will include all games played on a Sunday and the final day of the season. This revised deal will run until the end of 2028-29, the point when the Premier League will have to decide whether to push for the end of English football's Saturday 3pm blackout. The direction of travel is clear but it is not yet obvious when the last barriers to televised football will fall.
