USA Women Beat China 3-0 in Friendly Under Emma Hayes
Goals from Catarina Macario, Sam Coffey and Lindsey Heaps delivered a convincing win for the American women, who dominated a fragile Chinese side at Saint Paul, Minnesota.
It was the 17th win in 21 games for the USA's English head coach Hayes, who was tasked with restoring the Americans to the summit of the women's game following their early 2023 World Cup exit.
Hayes, who led the USA to a gold medal at last year's Olympics, is preparing her squad for this year's qualifiers for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
The former Chelsea manager would have liked what she saw in a fluid first half performance that saw China's risky tactical decision to play with a high line punished ruthlessly.
Macario opened the scoring after 28 minutes, bundling home a close-range finish after good work from Alyssa Thompson.
The USA doubled their tally seven minutes later with a brilliantly worked goal, which began when the gifted 17-year-old midfielder Lily Yohannes released Thompson down the right who crossed for Macario.
Macario played a short pass into Coffey, who swept home with aplomb.
Macario and Heaps both threatened to add to the USA tally with long-range shots that were just off target before half-time.
Heaps though bagged the USA's third in the 54th minute, nodding in past China goalkeeper Pan Hongyan to effectively seal the win.

Soccer-Sesko 'ready to play' as Amorim plots United's return to European football
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Friendly - Manchester United v Fiorentina - Old Trafford, Manchester, Britain - August 9, 2025 New Manchester United player Benjamin Sesko applauds fans before the match Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Boyers/File Photo MANCHESTER (Reuters) -Newly-signed Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko is ready to play but it is too early to say if he will start when the club kick off their Premier League campaign against Arsenal on Sunday, United manager Ruben Amorim said. Slovenia's Sesko joined United from RB Leipzig last weekend for a transfer fee of 76.5 million euros ($89 million) with 8.5 million in bonuses. United have spent around 200 million pounds this summer after finishing 15th last season. "We didn't have a lot of time but he is ready, physically he is ready, that is a big component in our league. Then, he's really smart... he is ready to play, we will see if he is going to start," Amorim told reporters on Friday. Amorim said United, who last season had their worst finish in the English top-flight since 1973-74, will go into the 2025-26 campaign aiming for a return to European soccer. "We cannot change everything in four weeks, but we are better. We're training harder and are more prepared to cope with the demands of the game," he said. "We want to return to Europe. We have to be realistic with our fans. We will have to fight a lot because there are more teams with time together than us. We have to focus game by game. We want to win against Arsenal." GYOKERES 'IN A DIFFERENT LEAGUE' Sunday's match will pit Amorim against one of the most successful signings in his coaching career, with former Sporting forward Viktor Gyokeres joining Arsenal in the summer. Sweden's Gyokeres, who joined the Lisbon-based club in 2023 under Amorim, was the top scorer in the Primeira Liga for two seasons in a row, helping Sporting win back-to-back titles. "Viktor is in a different league. Sporting have good scouting because they live from the players they can buy and sell to survive. I think he's a very good player. It's not a surprise to see him with a big club in England," Amorim said. The manager said defenders Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui were out for the weekend but forward Joshua Zirkzee and goalkeeper Andre Onana had recovered and would be available against Arsenal. "I learned a lot last season. I don't need to focus on the future. That doesn't matter and I don't care. I need to live day by day. Everything that is noise to our team, I take out of the picture, so I just prepare my team against Arsenal," Amorim added. Chelsea boss Maresca seeks new defender after Colwill injury
CHELSEA manager Enzo Maresca is pushing for a new centre-back signing following Levi Colwill's injury. The England defender suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in training and will miss most of the season. Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah are expected to start in central defence against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Maresca has doubts about replacing Colwill internally and is linked with Benfica's Antonio Silva. 'You know how important Levi has been for us last season, for the way we want to play,' Maresca said. The Italian emphasised Colwill's role in the team's build-up play and admitted the need for a replacement. 'We are trying to find a solution internally, but the club know exactly what I think,' he added. Maresca confirmed Chelsea are actively looking for a new central defender. 'We have a fantastic squad, but anything can happen in the transfer window,' he stated. Liverpool boss Arne Slot recently tipped Chelsea as title contenders this season. Maresca dismissed rival managers' comments, saying he focuses only on improving his team. Chelsea returned to training after their successful Club World Cup campaign. 'We guess we are ready,' Maresca said about their pre-season preparations. The Blues begin their Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace this weekend. - AFP

Chelsea hunt for new central defender as Colwill will be out long time for ACL injury
LONDON, Aug 15 — Chelsea are weighing up their options to address a defensive gap after centre back Levi Colwill suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, manager Enzo Maresca said ahead of their opening Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Colwill picked up the injury in training and has undergone successful surgery, with the 22-year-old England international expected to miss much of the new season. It typically takes some six to nine months for a player to recover from an ACL injury and return to action, leaving Chelsea without a key figure in their backline. 'He is okay but aware that he has to be a long time out,' Maresca told reporters on Friday. 'It's a big loss for us. He was so important for us last season. We are able to create chances and attack in the right way if we are able to build in the right way. Levi was a huge part of that. 'The club know exactly what I am thinking. I think we need a central defender, but we are also looking for an internal solution.' Chelsea are looking to build on last season's success after finishing fourth in the Premier League and winning the Club World Cup by beating European champions Paris St Germain in July. With the close-season transfer window closing on September 1 for Premier League clubs, Maresca was not ruling out further incomings at Stamford Bridge. The West London club have been active in the transfer market, signing Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Jorrel Hato, Liam Delap, Estevao Willian, among others. 'We have a fantastic squad. We are happy with the squad we have, no doubt. When the transfer window is open, anything can happen,' the Italian, who will enter his second season at Chelsea, said. 'We are a better team compared to one year ago because we worked together every day for one season.' Maresca was wary of Palace, who stunned Manchester City to win the FA Cup in May and reigning Premier League champions Liverpool in the FA Community Shield earlier this month. 'Very difficult. They beat in two finals probably the two best teams in England over the last 10 or 15 years,' he said. — Reuters
