Lochlea reveals first sherry and peat combination with Cask Strength Batch 3

Daily Record06-06-2025
This year's release is a first in flavour profile for the independently owned distillery in Ayrshire
Award winning farm-to-cask Lochlea Distillery has unveiled Cask Strength Batch 3 – the latest release in its annual series of limited-edition cask strength bottlings – and a first in flavour profile for the independently owned distillery.
This year's release marks a bold evolution in Lochlea's Cask Strength series, combining rich Oloroso sherry with distinctive Islay peat - a pairing never before explored by the distillery.

It also represents a significant milestone for Lochlea's Master Blender Jill Boyd, who joined the distillery in late 2024 and has led the selection and blending of Cask Strength Batch 3 from start to finish.

Jill carefully selected whisky that has been matured in a combination of Oloroso Sherry Butts and Ex-Islay peated casks, creating a final spirit that balances richness and depth with a surprising twist of smoke.
Cask Strength Batch 3 delivers a captivating nose of ripe red fruits and savoury BBQ smoke, followed by a rich palate of cherries and dark molasses lifted by warming ginger cake, toasted rye and charred wood smoke.
The long, layered finish lingers with baking spice, salty smoke, and oaky tannins intertwining with delicate floral notes of red roses to create a bold new take on Lochlea's signature style.
Each batch of Lochlea's Cask Strength whiskies are carefully blended and bottled without any dilution, so every sip is just like trying samples from the warehouse itself.
This latest release follows Cask Strength Batch 2 released last summer that had been matured in a combination of PX, Oloroso and STR casks showcasing a depth and complexity.
The inaugural Cask Strength expression in 2023 was a combination of spirit matured in first-fill Bourbon barrels and Oloroso Sherry casks, working particularly well at high strength to amplify the fruit, nut and cereal flavours that form Lochlea's house spirit style.

Jill commented: "I am especially proud of Cask Strength Batch 3 as it has been my first opportunity to curate one of our whiskies from concept to bottle, putting my own mark on our range. I wanted to push the boundaries of our house style with something bold and different.
"As many whisky lovers will know, sherry and peat are both hugely popular flavour profiles, and we saw an opportunity to bring them together in a way that feels fresh and bold, yet rooted in our distillery's DNA.
"It's complex, it's warming, and it's got a smoky twist making it the perfect dram to enjoy with a BBQ in the sunshine!"
Cask Strength Batch 3 will be available from Lochlea stockists from May 29 onwards .It has been bottled at 59.8 per cent and has an RRP of £67.

Second Brexit referendum won't happen ‘in my lifetime', Neil Kinnock says

The ex-Labour leader Neil Kinnock, who served as Vice-President of the European Commission between 1999 to 2004, warned Brexit had 'inflicted such harm' on Britain A second referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union won't happen "in my lifetime", Neil Kinnock has said. ‌ The ex-Labour leader, who served as Vice-President of the European Commission between 1999 to 2004, warned Brexit had "inflicted such harm" on Britain. And he cast doubt on the ability of the government to grasp sustained and high levels of economic growth outside the single market and customs union. ‌ His comments come after a poll showed earlier this month nearly half of voters want another EU referendum within five years. Less than a third said they would back Brexit in a new vote. But asked whether he believed there was a possibility of a second vote in his lifetime, Lord Kinnock, 83, replied: "Not in my lifetime, no. It's not going to happen in my lifetime." ‌ But he predicted that Britain would join a new European organisation in the future. He told The Mirror: "In my grandchildren's lifetime, probably my children's lifetime, we will be part of a Europe-wide economic and political organisation. "The EU is going through changes as well, of course, as everything does. That will come about because of the reality of proximity. It's by far our biggest market. It was until seven years ago, free of impediment." Lord Kinnock, who campaigned alongside other party leaders to Remain during the 2016 referendum vote, added: "That change is not going to take place while I'm breathing. I just wish it was because it would be for the benefit of our country. "The real patriots are those arguing for the closest possible relationship, economically, politically, and in strategic terms." He praised Keir Starmer's efforts to reset the relationship with Brussels that was left in tatters after years of fractious Brexit negotiations under the Tories. In May, the PM struck a new deal with the bloc, saying it was time to "move on from the stale old debates and political fights to find common sense, practical solutions which get the best for the British people". Lord Kinnock said: "He's doing it while very rigorously trying to fulfil his mandate not to go back into the single market and customs union." But he warned: "Here's the problem. The government has rightly - absolutely rightly - got ambition to secure sustained, high levels of economic growth. I don't think we can do that outside the single market and customs unions."

Donald Trump branded a ‘baby with a hand grenade in shop specialising in glass'

The unflattering description of the US President from Neil Kinnock came as the ex-Labour leader hit out at the Mr Trump's 'completely inexcusable' global tariff policy. Donald Trump has been branded a "baby with a hand grenade in a shop specialising in crockery and glass". ‌ The unflattering description of the US President from Neil Kinnock came as the ex-Labour leader hit out at the Mr Trump's "completely inexcusable" global tariff policy. ‌ He warned it will inflict "terrible damage" on world trade and the American public. But he praised Keir Starmer, who has negotiated a deal with the US, for "playing a very, very difficult hand, extremely well" in relations with the erratic American President. ‌ Lord Kinnock said: "It's a recognition of where Britain really is in the modern world. The Prime Minister knows when he's dealing with a capricious, immature, ultimately powerful man, then he's not dealing with anything remotely normal in international relations. "He knows Donald Trump could on a tantrum and inflict terrible damage on our country. If he can keep Trump near stability and consistency he's done very well." It comes as Mr Trump prepares to jet to the UK on Air Force Once for an "unprecedented" second state visit in September. He was handed the invitation from King Charles during his first face-to-face meeting with Mr Starmer in the Oval Office back in February. ‌ Asked whether the PM was right to extend the invitation, Lord Kinnock told The Mirror: "We use whatever means we have." Recalling a tip from his late wife, Glenys Kinnock, he said: "I remember I had broken the radiator belt in my mini, and Glenys came up with a brilliant idea of using her tights, which I did, and it got us home. ‌ "The tights, I could tie them tight enough to replicate the belt. And got me home. International politics is a bit like that with Donald Trump around. "I mean he's a baby with a hand grenade in a shop specialising in crockery and glass." He added: "He's got to be dealt with in the same way that the brave people who defuse bombs do it. Quite extraordinary in their courage. Keir doesn't have to show quite the level of bravery, but he's got to be just as delicate with his spanner and his screwdriver."

Footballers selling houses in Cheshire's 'Golden Triangle' slash prices

Football stars in Cheshire's 'Golden Triangle', the affluent towns of Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Prestbury, are having to slash the cost of their houses to secure sales Football stars trying to flog their mansions have seen a Premier League price drop as they knock hundreds of thousands off the asking price. ‌ The stars in Cheshire's 'Golden Triangle', the affluent towns of Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Prestbury, and surrounding areas are having to slash the cost to secure sales. Current and former stars from top clubs including Man United, City, Everton and Liverpool, have been struggling to sell their homes. ‌ England and Man City ace Phil Foden is the latest ace to knock hundreds of thousands off the price of his home in Prestbury. Among the other players and ex-players to reduce asking prices are former City captain Vincent Kompany, ex-Everton captain Tim Cahill and former England international Joleon Lescott. It comes after Alexander Isak's 'juicy' Man Utd offer and Pep Guardiola intervention to seal £51m deal. ‌ Other footballers including Thiago Alcantara and Alejandro Garnacho have seen their houses languishing on the market for months with no buyers in sight. England star Foden has just knocked £300,000 off the asking price of his home with a new price of £2.95m. His former team mate Kompany has also shaved off £300,000 with a new price of £3.65m for his home in Hale Barns. And former City star Lescott was forced to chop £250,000 off his home in Alderley Edge after originally putting it on the market for £4.5m. Cahill has lopped off a massive £1.5m from his mansion in Hale after originally trying to sell it for £6.5m. The 'Golden Triangle' has been a hotbed of housing activity in the top end of the market fuelled by Premier League footballers in the area for years. One local estate agent and mortgage broker said: 'What you have to remember is there's a very small pool of people who can afford properties like these. The super rich or other footballers. These are top end, high-spec properties. ‌ 'A lot of players have turned to renting property. They might only be at a club for a couple of seasons, so it makes more sense for them to rent rather than make a substantial investment. 'The prices associated with properties in areas like this mean they are only achievable to very wealthy business people or fellow players. The area is known for attracting wealthy residents. There's no evidence of widespread price drops, but prices can be flexible if someone is pushing for a sale.' Other stars who have struggled to sell their homes in the area include former Liverpool star Thiago Alcantara whose £5.95m Knutsford home has been languishing on the market since December. United winger Garnacho's Altrincham home has been sitting on the market since he put it up for sale in March for £3.85m.
