Take a Pet-Friendly Foodie Day Trip to Bodega Bay

Sure, Bodega Bay's known as the seaside hamlet where Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 avian horror-flick was filmed, but when you're not worried about a repeat attack by domoic acid-addled birds, it's downright charming. Unfortunately, word's gotten out about that, and overnight prices can run steep in the peak season.
Instead, why not day-trip it the scenic way, sampling some of the North Bay's tastiest hotspots as you go? Hop in the car—dogs are invited—and choose your own adventure with these delightful food (and drink) options. You can snack as you go, or collect items for a picnic-style feast once you hit the beach.
Whether you're coming from the East Bay, South Bay, or Peninsula, by the time you've reached Point Reyes Station, you've likely worked up an appetite. You may not be as ravenous as the gaggles of cyclists you've likely passed along the way, but it's definitely snack time.
Follow the smell of fragrant carbs to Brickmaiden Breads, where you'll find an abundant display of freshly baked delicacies. Feeling like an extra-special treat, I went for the almond cardamom cake ($6.50)—because when in doubt, cake for breakfast is always the right choice. That said, the dried apricot-and-pecan scone looked dang tasty too, as did the bergamot-and-rose snickerdoodle. The menu changes frequently, so check for the latest updates. Meanwhile, for lunch later, I picked up a ficelle sandwich with bulgogi tofu, chile oil, and peanutty slaw ($9).
Looking to extend your pit stop? Head toward Point Reyes Books for some browsing. This cozy bookshop is carefully curated, with an especially strong nature and environment section. Pick up a beach read for later, maybe?
Heidrun Meadery, Point Reyes Station
Just north of town in Point Reyes Station, you'll find Heidrun Meadery, a bucolic tasting room and shop serving sparkling mead, or honey wine, including variants made with local wildflower honey. You're welcome to stop and sit a while—the tasting room invites lingering on a sunny day—but there are more destinations ahead, so it may be wise to just pick up a bottle and continue on your way.

Next, you'll drive along Highway 1, rolling along the waterfront edge of Tomales Bay until you arrive at The Marshall Store. If you're visiting on a weekend, prepare for a line—but don't be alarmed. It moves quickly. Grab a table at the outside waterfront patio and dining area. Oysters are what the Marshall Store is best known for—they're from the owners' family farm, Tomales Bay Oyster Co., and come prepared six ways: raw, barbecue, Rockefeller, Kilpatrick, chorizo-style, or smoked.
But there's something for everyone. Seafood avoiders can chow down on the tri-tip, pulled pork (braised in Guinness), or Cajun sausage sandwiches, or a baked brie wheel made with roasted garlic and cheese from the Nicasio Valley Cheese Co.
Oysters Rockefeller and smoked oysters are two of the six styles of oyster preparations available at The Marshall Store overlooking Tomales Bay.

Doran Regional Park, Bodega Bay
From Marshall, it's a little over a half-hour to get to Bodega Bay's Doran Regional Park. You've finally made it to your destination! Grab a blanket to sprawl out for the afternoon at this dog- and family-friendly beach, and set out your collected goodies—bread, mead, pastries, or oysters—or your DIY picnic.
It's still the Sonoma coast, so bring a sweatshirt, but the active breezes on a recent spring visit didn't seem to deter tots or pups from playing in the water—and in fact, the conditions made for excellent kite-flying. One lovely feature of Doran is that the park sits along a spit, and on the inlet side, the water is flat enough for activities like stand-up paddle-boarding or kayaking. The park also has campgrounds if you're not ready to leave yet.
Doran Regional Park in Bodega Bay is home to a two-mile beach, and is dog- and family-friendly.

Captain Davey's, Bodega Bay
By the time you've played at the park for a while—and eaten all your other snacks, you might be feeling in need of caffeine or something sweet. Satisfy both by heading over to Captain Davey's, a quaint ice cream and coffee shop in town. Affogato, anyone?
Re-energized for the drive back, you can skip the scenic route, ditching Highway 1 for the faster U.S. 101.

Should you be inclined to make a pit stop for some out-of-the-ordinary shopping on your return trip, the Petaluma Village Premium Outlets are home to not one but two pet-oriented bookshops. Morti's Used Book Nook and Cat Adoption Lounge is a cat cafe open weekends that also sells used books, and the Word Horde Emporium of the Weird and Fantastic shares its space with a charming pet shop.

Kim Novak to receive Venice Film Festival's lifetime achievement honor
Kim Novak, the glamorous and fiercely independent star of one of the greatest films ever made, Alfred Hitchcock's 'Vertigo,' will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Venice Film Festival this fall. Festival organizers said Monday that they will also host the world premiere of Alexandre Philippe's documentary 'Kim Novak's Vertigo,' which was made in collaboration with the actor. Alberto Barbera, the festival's artistic director, said that the award, 'celebrates a star who was emancipated, a rebel at the heart of Hollywood who illuminated the dreams of movie lovers before retiring to her ranch in Oregon to dedicate herself to painting and to her horses.' Novak, who is 92, left her Hollywood career behind long ago. But in recent years she has occasionally granted interviews around significant film anniversaries and made public appearances. After presenting at the 2014 Oscars many online, including Donald Trump, insulted her appearance. She responded with an open letter writing, 'I will no longer hold myself back from speaking out against bullies.' Earlier this year actor Sydney Sweeney paid homage to Novak on the Met Gala red carpet. She's portraying Novak in a new film directed by Colman Domingo about her relationship with Rat Packer Sammy Davis Jr. Of this latest honor, Novak said she is 'deeply touched' to receive the award. 'To be recognized for my body of work at this time in my life is a dream come true,' Novak said. 'I will treasure every moment I spend in Venice. It will fill my heart with joy.' The Venice Film Festival runs from Aug. 27 through Sept. 6, but the full slate of films selected won't be announced until late July. 'The Holdovers' filmmaker Alexander Payne will preside over the main competition jury.

I Tried Popeyes's 3 New Chicken Wraps: Honest Review Ranking
Popeyes just added three new chicken wraps to their menu for a "limited time only." As a massive fast-food fan (and former worker), I decided to try them all and give you my honest opinion. Let's get started! This news came just days before McDonald's announced the return of their famous Snack Wraps, which will be released later in June. I genuinely can't wait to order from both restaurants and compare which ones are also unveiled a new Blueberry Lemonade drink, which can be served chilled or frozen, so you know I had to try that too. The wraps are stuffed with a chicken tender, lettuce, shredded cheese, and pickles. There are three different signature spreads to choose from: Classic, Spicy, or Honey Mustard. Each wrap is sold for $3.99, but they currently have a "bundle" deal going where you can order two wraps and a premium lemonade for $9.99 total. At some Popeyes you can also order your wrap with their Blackened Chicken (which basically just means the chicken tender is marinated in Cajun seasonings and isn't battered or breaded). This is only available via online ordering at some locations, so unfortunately I didn't have this option when I went in person in NYC. First up was their Honey Mustard Wrap, which was my least favorite of the bunch (but was still enjoyable!). Popeyes is obviously famous for its chicken, and that part didn't disappoint. It was crispy and crunchy and just really freaking good. But with only one chicken tender per wrap, the ratio felt off, and at times other items severely overshadowed the chicken. I also had a few bites with zero chicken in it. But if you're a big fan of honey mustard then you'll probably enjoy this wrap because it adds a tangy sweetness to it. However, in my opinion, Popeyes has other spreads that better pair with these specific wrap ingredients. I ordered each wrap with the same exact ingredients because I wanted to give them all a fair comparison. If you're a pickle lover like me then you'll probably be a little disappointed because I only received two pickle slices on each wrap. But if you love cheese then you'll be happy because, damn, they really loaded those suckers up (to the point where I literally had to scrape off about half of the shredded cheese because it was SO overpowering and pretty much the only ingredient I could taste). I'm glad these wraps came with lettuce though – that really helped to balance things out, and it also added an extra crunch that was different from the chicken. They accidentally gave me an extra wrap, so I decided to open that up and take a photo so you can see exactly what it looks like on the inside. Each wrap had a ton of sauce at its base, but the top half was kind of dry. I wish it was spread more evenly. Next up was the Spicy Wrap, which was my second favorite of the three. I'm a huge fan of spice, but if you're expecting any actual heat then you should probably look elsewhere because this sauce was tame (it was basically just mayo with a little hot sauce and a few spices mixed in). I do think I would have liked this wrap even more with their Blackened Chicken, but I also think Popeyes is doing themselves a disservice by not coating their tenders in the same sauces they use for their wings (like their Signature Hot Wings, Sweet 'N Spicy Wings, and Ghost Pepper Wings). Still, though, this wrap was great, and I'd order it again. Finally, we have their Classic Wrap, which was easily my favorite. The mayo spread paired so well with the crispy chicken, and when I actually got a bite with pickles it was perfect. I do think this particular wrap would have been even better without any shredded cheese. Also, I should note that Popeyes's wraps are made with tortillas that are "inspired by" their famous biscuits, but, if I'm being honest, they just tasted like regular tortillas to me. Still, this was easily the best wrap of the bunch. Popeyes also released a new Blueberry Lemonade, which you can get as a frozen drink (kinda like a slushie) or just as a chilled one with ice. I opted for the frozen version but also ordered a regular Strawberry Lemonade (which they started serving back in 2021) so I could compare the two and see how the new drink holds up. It was HOT outside, so the first few sips of each drink absolutely hit the spot. The blueberry one was sweet and tart but extremely sugary (as was expected, obviously). It somehow tasted even more sugary as it melted and turned from a slushie into a pure liquid, and I couldn't finish more than half of it without feeling gross. The Strawberry Lemonade, though, was incredible (and dangerous! Like, I could drink these all day). This one was still sweet but not as sugary. It was perfectly refreshing. If you want to try something new and can only pick one Blueberry Lemonade then I'd order the chilled version over the frozen one. However, if you're stuck between which flavor to order then my vote absolutely goes to the Strawberry Lemonade. I wish I had one in my hand right now. So, do I think all of these new menu items are worth it? Well, that depends! First of all, my mind is perpetually stuck in 1996 where the price for almost every fast-food item was, like, $1. So, to me, $3.99 for a single wrap is kind of wild (but this is the same exact price that McDonald's will be selling their Snack Wraps for later this month, so I guess it's the new standard for 2025). If you're looking for something quick that you can eat on the go then I definitely think the Classic Wrap is worth it. I'd personally order their bundle deal with two Classic Wraps and a chilled Strawberry Lemonade for under $10, and I'd also get them without shredded cheese. I think a real game-changer would be to order these Chicken Wraps without a spread so you can top them with Popeyes's Blackened Ranch or Bayou Buffalo sauces instead. If you ask me, those are the new flavors Popeyes should try experimenting with when they (hopefully) re-release their Chicken Wraps. If they do that, I'll be first in line.
