19th century Indumati Palace to be flanked by upscale apartments

Time of India3 days ago
Vadodara: The 145-year-old Indumati Palace is a landmark of the city. Owned by royal scion Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad, it will soon be flanked by upscale apartments. The Gaekwads have decided to develop the Indumati Palace premises, located opposite the grand Laxmi Vilas Palace, into a residential and commercial complex.
"This will be the first residential complex in the country to have a majestic palace. Six 12-storey buildings will be built on the premises — two to the left of the palace, two to the right and two behind it. The project won't affect the palace's aesthetics and heritage value," Pratapsinhrao told TOI over the phone from Mumbai.
"We will restore the palace and turn it into a clubhouse with recreational amenities exclusively for residents.
We plan to launch the project during the Ganesh festivities this month. The apartments will be ready in three years," said Pratapsinhrao, whose Baroda Crown Holdings Pvt Ltd has joined hands with Johnson Real Estate Pvt Ltd for the project.
A retail space is also planned in what is now the front yard of the palace. "We will have our own residential space and an office in one of these buildings. After the project is complete, I will be in Vadodara frequently and will work from here," he added.
The Indumati Palace was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III and was later named after his granddaughter, Indumati Raje.
The palace was home to the royal collection of books along with the Gaekwad royal offices. The Gaekwads would celebrate the Ganesh festival by installing the idol at the Indumati Palace before the venue was shifted to the Durbar Hall of the Laxmi Vilas Palace in 1967. When possession of Indumati Palace went to Pratapsinhrao in 2014, he decided to restart the Ganesh festivities there.
"We will continue installing the Ganesh murti in the Indumati Palace in the coming years. It's our family tradition that will always be followed," Pratapsinhrao added. This is the second major project taken up by Pratapsinhrao in the city after the Nazarbaug Palace shopping mall near Mandvi Gate.

PMO may shift in Sept from South Block to Executive Enclave-I

PM Narendra Modi NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister's Office is likely to shift from South Block to the newly built Executive Enclave-I - a few hundred metres away - next month, sources said. Soon, the Cabinet Secretariat will also shift from Rashtrapati Bhavan to this new office complex, which is also likely to get a new name. Ministries of home affairs and personnel have almost been shifted to Kartavya Bhawan-3, which PM Narendra Modi inaugurated earlier this month. TOI has learnt that PMO may move in the second half of Sept. Officials said going by the trend of govt naming all Central Vista projects, such as Ka-rtavya Path (earlier Raj Path) and Kartavya Bhawan, signifying a change in its approach, Executive Enclave-I may also get a name, something linked to 'service' (sewa). North & South Block to be turned into public museum In his address to PMO officials after taking oath for the third consecutive time as PM, Modi had said, "PMO should become an institution of service and the people's PMO" and that it should serve as a catalytic agent, generating new energy to provide light to the entire system. Shifting of offices from North Block and South Block to new buildings is crucial as the govt is keen to expedite the conversion of these two iconic buildings into a public museum called 'Yuge Yugeen Bharat Sangrahalaya'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The Prime Minister had recently said that this will allow every citizen to witness and experience India's rich civilisational journey. The British-era North Block and South Block buildings have been the power centre for nearly 80 years, housing offices of the Prime Minister, and ministries of defence, home, external affairs and finance. A govt source, who was earlier involved in the master planning of the Central Vista revamp project, told TOI that one of the main rationale behind shifting these top offices, which make national policies, from these two buildings was to remove traces of colonial mindset.

Unsafe bridge over Kusi river to be demolished

1 2 Kendrapada: A decade-old unsafe bridge over the Kusi river at Panasa gram panchayat in Jajpur district will be demolished soon, official sources said. Special secretary, department of rural development Sarbeswar Singh, in his letter dated Aug 12 directed the superintendent engineer (SE) of rural development, Jajpur to demolish the 'Biju Setu', which was built in 2015 at a cost of Rs 17 crore. Earlier, a committee of the rural development department gave its approval to demolish the bridge. The bridge had been shut off for commuters since last month after three of its seven pillars leaned on July 11. "A tender will be floated soon by our department to demolish the unsafe bridge," said superintending engineer (rural development), Jajpur, Abinash Barik. "While demolishing the bridge, adequate safety measures and special care will be taken to ensure that there are no traffic problems in the vicinity due to the demolition. A new bridge will be built after the demolition," added Barik. "When bridge pillars lean, it indicates a serious structural defect that could lead to collapse. This leaning often results from issues with the bridge's foundation, such as soil erosion, poor construction or overloading," said Biswanath Behera, a retired engineer. "The bridge connects Chainipur gram panchayat to Panasa gram panchayat. The authorities should build a new bridge after demolishing the unsafe bridge," said Kulamani Parida, the sarpanch of Panasa. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo "I have been using this bridge to reach the market in Jajpur town only five kilometres away to sell vegetables. The officials closed the unsafe bridge for commuters last month. As a result, I have to travel an extra six km to go to Jajpur town," said Bhagabat Behera of Panasa. "Due to lack of proper maintenance and poor construction work, a decade-old bridge became unsafe. As a result, the fate of many villagers of Barabhagia, Pusi, Ankola and other villages is now at stake. We hope the authorities will build a new bridge after dismantling the unsafe structure. The govt should take action against the contractors and officials as the bridge was erected by them," said Sunil Kumar Jena of Chainapur. Sugarcane farmers in AP struggle to survive due to unpaid dues, factory closures

1 2 Visakhapatnam: Sugarcane cultivation in Andhra Pradesh has declined significantly due to increased production costs, labour shortages, and the closure of several sugar factories. The state's sugar industry is in crisis, with farmers struggling to survive due to unpaid dues and the uncertainty surrounding the factories. In the combined Visakhapatnam district, the Govada sugar factory is the only one surviving out of four. However, it owes around Rs 32 crore to farmers from the last crushing season. To be operational for this season, the factory needs another Rs 60 crore for overhauling and other expenses, bringing the total requirement to Rs 90 crore. Farmers have been waiting for their money since the last crushing season, and the delay has led to protests. Many farmers have already shifted to other crops such as maize, paddy, casuarina, and sunflower due to the uncertainty surrounding the sugar industry. The closure of sugar factories has been a major contributing factor, with two factories, Bheemasingi and Sitanagaram, closed in the combined Visakhapatnam district. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Farmers are now transporting their produce to the Srikakulam district for processing. Meanwhile, similar situation prevails in Krishna district was Challapalli, Lakshmipuram, and Hanuman Junction factories shutting down in the recent years. The extent of sugarcane farming in the state has decreased to only 40,000 hectares over the last decade. The Anakapalli district has witnessed a drastic fall, with farmers now cultivating below 3,000 hectares compared to 30,000 hectares seven years ago. Speaking to TOI, sugarcane farmer A Satyanarayana said that sugarcane is a long-term crop that takes 10 months and requires a significant investment. "Farmers are getting only Rs 85,000 to Rs 90,000 revenue per acre. It is below Rs 65,000 in rainfed lands after investing Rs 80,000. How will the farmer survive?" he asked. Most farmers are depending on jaggery, as the Anakapalli district has the second-largest market in the country. However, the prices of jaggery have not provided much benefit to the farmers, , as they received only Rs 381 per 10 kg lump. Ramunaidu, another farmer, said that the number of sugar factories has also dwindled, with only five factories now running out of 29. Of these, nine cooperative sugar factories closed, including three in the erstwhile Visakhapatnam and 15 were private factories. "The future of the Govada sugar factory is uncertain, and it needs around Rs 100 crore for crushing this season. Earlier, it used to crush around five lakh tonnes of sugarcane, but now it has dropped to only one lakh tonnes. This year, farmers expect a steep decline in production," he said.
