Japanese manufacturers moving headquarters out of central Tokyo

Japan Timesa day ago
Toshiba, Fujitsu and other major Japanese manufacturers are relocating their headquarters functions from central Tokyo to elsewhere in the country in response to the spread of remote work.
These moves are also aimed at improving coordination among research and development, manufacturing and corporate planning officials.
Toshiba is moving its headquarters from a high-rise building in Shibaura, Tokyo, where it has been for about 40 years, to a building in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture.
Its executive office and corporate planning department have been relocated to Kawasaki, and the remaining public relations department will move to the new office by the end of this month.
The Toshiba name is derived from Shibaura, while Kawasaki hosted a former incandescent lamp factory of the company.
"We aim to overcome the current situation in which internal organizations lack cooperation due to vertical divisions," a company official said of the expected benefits from the relocation.
Fujitsu also has its headquarters in Kawasaki. Last year, it consolidated its head office functions in the Shiodome district in Tokyo's Minato Ward and research and development bases into Kawasaki, where it was founded. The company has renamed its main base in Kawasaki "Technology Park," with a plan to redevelop it into a facility capable of conducting demonstration experiments of cutting-edge technologies.
Last year, precision instrument maker Nikon built a new office in a quiet residential area in Nishioi in Tokyo's Shinagawa Ward, where it established its base about 100 years ago, moving from a large office building in front of Shinagawa Station in the capital.
The company is fostering community relations by inviting local elementary school students to microscope workshops at the new office.
"We are pleased that people appear to accept that Nikon is back," said a public relations official.
In contrast, Sharp will return its headquarters to the city of Osaka in 2026 after moving to its plant in the city of Sakai in Osaka Prefecture in 2016 amid a management crisis.
The company now aims to attract talented personnel and enhance connections with business partners in the city of Osaka, which offers greater convenience.

Japan Calls for Private Investments in Africa at TICAD 9

Newsfrom Japan Yokohama, Aug. 21 (Jiji Press)--Japan called on the private sector to increase investments in Africa, at the ongoing Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development, or TICAD 9, on Thursday. "We will promote the expansion of Japanese companies (into Africa) and the development of local industries (on the continent)," said former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, acting chair of the conference, which runs for three days through Friday in Yokohama, south of Tokyo. "It's more important than ever to leverage the energy of the private sector for the sustainable development of Africa, amid growing demand for funding to address social and economic challenges," Kishida noted. He explained Japan's plans to offer solution-based development aid through the Japan International Cooperation Agency and to enhance cooperation between Japanese companies and African startups. In light of global protectionist movements, the former prime minister emphasized the importance of multilateral trade systems centered on the World Trade Organization and based on rules. He indicated that Japan will work under incumbent Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's initiative to create an economic zone stretching from the Indian Ocean to Africa. [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]

Japan Vows 5.5 B. Dollars to Boost African Private Sector

Yokohama, Aug. 21 (Jiji Press)--Japan will provide up to 5.5 billion dollars in financial support over three years to the African private sector in collaboration with the African Development Bank, Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato reaffirmed Thursday. "I believe it will strengthen the partnership between Japan and Africa, bringing sustainable growth, " Kato said of the support, which will begin in 2026 through a framework called the Enhanced Private Sector Assistance for Africa, or EPSA. He made the remarks at an event of the Japan-led Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development, or TICAD 9, which began Wednesday in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, south of the Japanese capital, for a three-day run. Under the EPSA initiative, launched in 2005, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the African Development Bank cofinance projects in areas including electricity, sanitation and disaster prevention. JICA also provides yen-denominated loans to the bank, helping to lower interest rates on loans to private businesses. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]

McDonald's Japan asked to revamp 'Happy Set' promotion campaign

Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency has asked McDonald's Japan to revamp its "Happy Set" campaign after the major hamburger chain's "Pokemon" campaign resulted in lots of food waste. The agency said it requested the company to improve its sales strategy and take steps to prevent food loss. This comes after the firm's recent campaign, which ran from August 9 to 11, drew controversy. It gave away Pokemon trading cards to purchasers of its Happy Set meals. But it was found that some customers bought the combos in bulk only to get the cards and resell them, while discarding lots of food. Commissioner Horii Natsuko of the agency told reporters on Thursday that it is regrettable that a lot of food was wasted. Horii said she takes the issue seriously. McDonald's Japan said it plans to introduce stricter sales quotas for the Happy Set. The company also decided to suspend a campaign due to start Friday next week, in which customers are to be offered food items with trading cards from a popular manga series, and it is reviewing related measures.
