Former Top Prospect Facing Potential IL Stint With Cubs

Yahoo02-04-2025

The Chicago Cubs play their domestic Opening Day on Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field, but they may be without one of their top bench players.
According to Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic on X, middle infielder/outfielder Vidal Brujan may start the year on the injured list after he banged his right elbow into the outfield wall trying to make a catch over the weekend.
Brujan, 27, was ranked on MLB Pipeline as the No. 3 overall second base prospect while a member of the Tampa Bay Rays organization in 2021. Notable players ranked ahead of him were Nick Gonzales of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Nick Madrigal of the New York Mets.

The Dominican Republic native has struggled at the plate early in his MLB career, batting just .189 with five home runs in 202 games. After playing parts of three seasons with the Rays from 2021 to 2023, Tampa Bay traded Brujan to the Miami Marlins in November 2023.

Brujan lasted just over one calendar year with the Marlins, who traded him to the Cubs in December for first baseman Matt Mervis and cash considerations.
If Brujan needs a trip to the 10-day IL to begin the season, the Cubs' bench players who could see more playing time include third baseman/second baseman Jon Berti and third baseman Gage Workman.

Brujan has no minor league options remaining, so if the Cubs demote him at any point during the 2025 MLB season, they risk another club claiming him off waivers.
The one aspect of Brujan's game that has improved during his career in MLB is his defensive versatility. He's made at least one appearance at every position besides catcher, including two trips to the mound in blowouts.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Jeimer Candelario — the Reds' highest-priced signing of the past six seasons — has seen his tenure in Cincinnati end. The Reds designated the oft-injured infielder for assignment Monday before their game against the New York Yankees. Candelario signed a three-year, $45 million contract in December 2023. He is owed nearly $23 million, including $7,983,871 for the remainder of this season, $12 million for next season and a $3 million buyout for 2027. 'It was hard to get a hold of him. And (general manager) Nick (Krall) finally talked to him and said it was, as you can imagine, (difficult),' manager Terry Francona said. 'I have tried to reach out to him, and he understandably, it was just going to voicemail, and I get it. But again, I will say, it's tough. I know that's not an easy decision, but we think it can help make us better.' The 31-year old Candelario was batting .113 (9 of 80) in 22 games this season. He had been sidelined since late April due to a lumbar spine strain. He was on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville before returning to Cincinnati on Sunday. Candelario played 131 games for Cincinnati and batted .207. The Reds, who had won 10 of their last 15 going into Monday night, have been encouraged by the play of Christian Encarnacion-Strand at third base and Spencer Steer at first. ___ AP MLB:

Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez leaves game after being hit on the right hand by a pitch

CHICAGO (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez left the game Monday night in the first inning after being hit on the hand by a 95.9 mph fastball from Chicago White Sox starter Shane Smith. The team said on social media he sustained a bruise and that X-rays were negative. Suárez hopped in the batter's box as he raised his right hand in pain. He dropped his bat and grabbed his right hand with his left. He was replaced in the field for the bottom of the first by Ildemaro Vargas. The day started with Suárez being named the NL player of the week after he batted .440 with four homers and 10 RBIs. It's the second Diamondbacks player to recently be hit by a pitch. Star outfielder Corbin Carroll hasn't played since a sinker caught him in the left hand Wednesday in Toronto. The banged-up Diamondbacks are also missing catcher Gabriel Moreno, who suffered a hairline fracture in his right index finger after being hit by a wild pitch. ___ AP MLB:
