Daily Mail28-05-2025

A rescue operation is underway after a boat reportedly transporting 100 migrants capsized when passengers shifted to one side of the vessel to reach safety.
According to local reports, two women died and girl is in critical condition after the boat capsized at around 9:30am in the port of La Restinga on El Hierro, Canary Islands.
It is currently unknown whether the two women drowned in the accident or had died earlier during the crossing, a spokesperson for the Government Delegation told EFE.
Images from the scene showed Maritime Rescue towing the small vessel through the waters, but once it had been docked in the port, the boat capsized with many of its occupants still inside, including several babies.
The boat had more than 100 people on board, according to initial estimates, including children, and many have fallen into the sea following the incident.
The Spanish port's emergency services are caring for those that fell into the water, while dock workers and diving clubs are also participating in rescue efforts.

Holidaying Brits warned ‘don't drink beer' in Spain as 42C African heat plume strikes – map shows scorched resorts

BRITS holidaying in Spain have been warned not to the drink the beer amid a scorching 42-degree heatwave from Africa. Areas of the country roasted under extreme heat over the weekend - and the balmy temperatures look set to stay. 6 6 6 Some spots were so hot the state forecaster, Aemet, was forced to issue weather warnings. Yellow and amber alerts came into force on Sunday - with Sevilla, Cordoba and Jaen in the south worst affected. Emergency guidance was issued to tourists and locals alike advising them on how to stay safe when it's sweltering. One suggestion likely unpopular with Brits on their hols was to avoid alcohol, because it has a dehydrating effect on the body. The advice is to drink water often, even if you're not thirsty, and avoid both alcohol and caffeine. It was also recommended to "dress smart", which means wearing loose-fitting clothes - particularly cotton or linen if possible. Lighter colours reflect the sun so can help you to stay cool. Another point is to simply stay indoors during times of peak temperatures, and certainly to avoid any strenuous activity under the sun. The authorities also issued a reminder about the signs of heatstroke, so people know when they need to find help. Fatigue, dizziness, headaches, confusion and nausea are all common symptoms of heatstroke which, in severe cases, can be fatal. Houses should be shuttered up during the day, it was advised, but and vents opened at night to allow a cooling airflow. And finally, people were urged to keep a close eye on anyone vulnerable. The elderly, people with chronic illnesses or those living alone are particularly at risk of heat-related complications, so communities were encouraged to work together to check in on them. There was a special mention for tourists, who are more likely to end up in hospital during heatwaves than seasoned locals. The culprit behind the immense heat was a plume of hot air which blew over from north Africa. Once it reached Spain, the air stayed hot thanks to clear skies and atmospheric stability, Aemet explained. Monday was predicted to bring more of the same the heat, with some areas again expected to top 40 degrees. The thermometer is predicted to remain high through this week, and above average for the rest of June. And there is also expected to be less rain than usual, meaning it will be dry all round for the country. However, there could be a temporary let-up from localised mid-week storms in the northwest and centre of the country. This follows a particularly hot May, with many locations seeing record-breaking temperatures - particularly in southern and western areas of Spain. 6 6 6

Schoolboy, 14, pleaded 'I don't want to die' as he was held by passers-by after being stabbed in broad daylight - as police arrest four in murder probe

The tearful parents of a 14-year-old boy stabbed to death outside a pub in New Moston today left a picture of their dead son Ibrahima Seck alongside floral tributes. His mother and other relatives wept as they embraced a couple living in the next street into whose arms Ibrahima collapsed as he staggered away desperately pleading 'I've been stabbed'. A man who tried to save Ibrahima's life when the bleeding schoolboy ran to his front door said: 'It was just awful - the lad died in my arms. 'He had tried two other houses but they wouldn't do anything. At least we tried to help him. Just be thankful you don't have to live around here, there's too many gangs.' Police said two boys aged 14 and 16 are under arrest on suspicion of murder and a girl, 14, and woman, 37, are being held on suspicion of assisting an offender. The teenager ran to a house nearby in New Moston after being injured, telling the resident, 'I don't want to die, according to the Manchester Evening News. 'He just came through the door and said 'I've been stabbed'. 'We sat him down on a chair and phoned an ambulance,' the resident told the newspaper. 'He just kept saying 'I don't want to die.'' Despite the efforts of the emergency services and staff from an air ambulance, the boy died in hospital. Officers were first called to Nevin Road, New Moston, at about 5pm on Sunday, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said. Police said early investigations established the identities of possible suspects and after attending a nearby address, the woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. A short time later the two boys were arrested on suspicion of murder. The teenage girl was arrested overnight, GMP said. All four remain in custody for questioning. Detective Chief Inspector John Charlton of GMP said: 'This incident will have shocked and saddened the local community, and distressed anyone who witnessed it. 'We are deploying significant resources to this murder investigation, and this led to quickly identifying potential suspects. 'We are still trying to establish the full circumstances around the incident - there will be a large police presence and several scenes in place while we continue to investigate this horrific incident. 'The boy's family are being supported by our officers and we are determined to give them the answers they deserve. 'We will provide updates to the family and the community as the investigation continues.'
