Museums saw 15 per cent spike in attendance after Canada Strong Pass introduced

OTTAWA — National galleries and museums across the country have seen a 15 per cent increase in attendance so far this summer, after the federal government introduced free or discounted admission through the new Canada Strong Pass.
The Canada Strong Pass, which took effect on June 20 and is available until Sept. 2, offers free national museum admission to children 17 and under, and a 50 per cent discount for those aged 18 to 24.
The pass also offers free admission to national parks and sites maintained by Parks Canada.
Hermine Landry, spokesperson for the office of the minister of Canadian identity and culture, said attendance in July was up 16 per cent over last year at the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum.
The Canada Agriculture and Food Museum has seen attendance spike by 24 per cent and the National Gallery of Canada has seen an increase of two per cent, she said.
The Canadian Museum of Nature has seen an increase of 12 per cent since the launch of the pass, while the Canada Science and Technology Museum has seen a 13 per cent increase and the Canada Aviation and Space Museum has seen a four per cent increase.
Some provincial and territorial museums and galleries are also taking part in the program, and the Manitoba Museum reports that its July attendance was up 11 per cent over last year.
"We are proud to see the enthusiasm for Canada, especially among families, as discounts on activities and travel can lead to substantial savings," Landry said. "More than ever, we must stand together: The increased attendance at iconic sites across the country is proof of that."
Through the Canada Strong Pass, Via Rail is also offering free fares for children 17 and under if they are accompanied by an adult, and a 25 per cent discount for travellers who are 18 to 24 years old.
Landry said more than 36,000 Via Rail bookings have been made with the Canada Strong Pass.
The Montréal to Toronto route was the most popular, with over 13,000 bookings made, she said.
Megan Hope, a spokesperson for Parks Canada, said in an email that free admission is expected to increase the number of people visiting Canada's national parks. However she said statistics for 2025 will not be made available until after the season has ended.

"The company has made arrangements with other Canadian and foreign carriers to provide customers alternative travel options to the extent possible. Customers will be notified of alternative travel options that are identified for them," Air Canada's statement said. "However, given other carriers are already very full due to the summer travel peak, securing such capacity will take time and, in many cases, will not be immediately possible." What an Air Canada Strike will mean for US travelers Air Canada does not operate any domestic flights within the U.S. Still, it is a major carrier for international connecting itineraries, and a key link between the U.S. and Canada. U.S. travelers with plans to visit Canada in the coming days and weeks, or to connect through Canadian hubs to destinations in Europe, Asia and beyond, should keep a close eye out for notifications from the airline about their flights. Even passengers who aren't booked to fly on Air Canada could be indirectly affected as other airlines try to absorb the passengers displaced by the strike. United Airlines and Air Canada are close partners as members of Star Alliance, so it's likely that United's international and trans-border flights will be a little fuller during the strike.

Officials are speaking out after recent reports putting tourism declines in Sin City in the spotlight. On Tuesday, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) held its board of directors meeting, addressing various factors that have been impacting tourism. Steve Hill, LVCVA president, reportedly spoke about the effect that tariffs are having on both returning and potential new visitors. "Some of the decisions our administration has made around international relations [have] caused a drop in tourism," said Hill, according to local outlet KTNV Las Vegas. Hill added, "Our international visitation is flat but is making up for a 20+% drop in tourism from Canada, which is our largest international source of visitation." Fox News Digital reached out to LVCVA for comment. Circa Resort & Casino CEO Derek Stevens recently told Fox News Digital that international tourism is down across an array of locations. "I think everyone is in a position where you can say we're missing some of our Canadian friends who aren't visiting this year," said Stevens. Nevada is among the top five most visited states by Canadians, according to the U.S. Travel Association. The association warned that the United States could see a 10% reduction in Canadian travel, which is about 2 million fewer visits, according to recent reports. The LVCVA board recently approved a $20 million sponsorship agreement for the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix. The agreement will extend the race through 2027 – an event that could boost tourism numbers. The board also discussed developments at the Harry Reid Airport — which has also seen a decline, dropping 4.1% year to date compared to the same time last year, according to the website. MONTREAL -- Air Canada said Wednesday it will begin a gradual suspension of flights to allow an orderly shutdown of the country's largest airline as it faces a potential work stoppage by its flight attendants on Saturday. The airline said the first flights will be cancelled Thursday, with more on Friday and a complete cessation of flying by Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge by the weekend. The union representing around 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants issued a 72-hour strike notice Wednesday. In response, the airline issued a lockout notice. Air Canada said customers whose flights are cancelled will be notified and they will be eligible for a full refund. The company also said it has made arrangements with other Canadian and foreign carriers to provide customers with alternative travel options to the extent possible. 'We regret the impact a disruption will have on our customers, our stakeholders and the communities we serve,' Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau said in a statement.
