Sione Tuipulotu fuelled by ‘chip on shoulder' as he returns to Melbourne
Six years ago he left for Japan, angry that his time at the Melbourne Rebels had failed to produce international recognition beyond the Junior Wallabies and having taken up an offer to play for Glasgow, he qualified for Scotland through his grandmother.
The 28-year-old has never looked back, going on to captain his adopted homeland while becoming one of the game's finest centres. No longer bitter at being rejected by Australia, he realises the scars have served him well.
'If you had asked me when I first moved from Melbourne I would say yeah, it's personal,' Tuipulotu said.
'There's still a chip on my shoulder. What has got me to this point is having that chip on my shoulder. But in terms of me being bitter about Australian rugby, not at all.
'I wasn't good enough to play for the Wallabies when I was in Melbourne. It wasn't a selector problem, I wasn't good enough, that's plain and simple.
'I owe everything to Scottish rugby because they've made me the player that I am today.
'Now I get the chance to go back to Melbourne and play in my home city and hopefully close out a Test series. The stars have aligned for me and I feel very grateful.'
Tuipulotu was installed at inside centre ahead of Bundee Aki for the series opener in Brisbane and Andy Farrell's decision was rewarded with the Scotland captain's best performance on tour.
Recovery from the damaged pectoral muscle that forced him to miss the Six Nations has proved challenging and it is only now that the hard-running, ball-playing midfielder is finding his stride.
A first-half try decorated his evening's work at Suncorp Stadium, which was made easier by the presence of his Scotland team-mates Finn Russell and Huw Jones.
'It was such a huge occasion but having Finn inside me and Huw outside me made it pretty special. I'm so familiar with those boys,' he said.
'I've been rooming with Finn this whole week and being around him made me not overreact to the occasion.

'It felt like we were playing a Scotland game together because we room together back with Scotland.
'His nature helps everyone and calms everyone. Then you add to that that he's got one of the best skill sets of any 10 in the world and it's a joy to play with.
'Everyone knows what I think about Huw Jones. It just feels like he's bigger and faster than everyone.'
The Lions know Australia will throw everything at them at Melbourne Cricket Ground – and intend hitting back hard.
'We expect them to be desperate but not more desperate than us because we're trying to close out a series next Saturday,' Tuipulotu said.
'We were pretty dominant in the first Test but the good thing for us is that it was nowhere near our best performance.'

Despite two ambulances rushing to the scene, paramedics sadly confirmed there was nothing they could do to save him. This same hotel has now seen four tourists fall to their deaths while staying at the establishment in recent months. Louise Essery, the 19-year-old's girlfriend, shared a touching tribute to Gary, whom she described as inspirational in every aspect of his life. Taking to Facebook with a poignant statement, Louise told loved ones that she would "remember the good times" and "celebrate the love he brought into their lives." She penned: "I never thought I would be sat here writing a goodbye. For those who knew Gary, oh you were so lucky. His passion and dedication was inspiring, whether in hockey, work, or with loved ones. I'm struggling to understand how you are no longer with me. "It hasn't really hit me yet. Gary taught and showed me valuable lessons that I'll carry with me forever. I think it's important to remember the good times and to celebrate the love he brought into our lives." She went on: "Everything feels heavy, and words can't express the love I have for Gary. I wish you could see how much you are loved. Even though our experiences together have paused, the memories we made will stay with me forever. I miss you so much already. "Thank you for the kind messages about Gary; they mean a lot. I love you forever and always, Gary Kelly." Spanish authorities confirmed in a statement that they were alerted to the incident at around 12.40am, reports the Daily Record. An investigation has been initiated following the most recent fatality at the hotel. Evan Thomson, from Aberdeen, tragically lost his life just two weeks ago at the same four-star hotel. The 26-year-old, who was on holiday with a mate celebrating his birthday, fell to his death on July 7. Gary, who played ice hockey for both Dundee Stars and Aberdeen Lynx last season, was remembered as a "hugely talented and charismatic individual". His sister, Kharis Kelly, also left a heartfelt tribute saying: "Our hearts are shattered beyond words. Our handsome boy has gone to the other side, Absolutely no words. We are asking everyone to respect our privacy as a family while we try to navigate through this tragic news. You'll forever be our boy Gary, Sleep tight." A spokesman for the Spanish Civil Guard added: "The fall could be accidental based on the early information obtained from cameras but as part of the investigation possible witnesses will need to be located and interviewed. The results of the post-mortem will also be important to the investigation." On Monday, bosses at Ibiza Rocks said they were "deeply shocked and devastated" following the latest tragedy as they suspended all events at the hotel. A spokesperson stated: "Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations. "The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority. Given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved, we believe it is right to pause our advertised events programme at this time."

Moray Leisure Centre chiefs announced the shock closure but said the gym and pool will be staying open. There will still also be fitness classes and wellbeing programmes. It was announced the ice rink will be closing for August 4. A spokesperson for MLC said: "It is with deep regret that we share the ice rink at Moray Leisure Centre will close from Monday 4th August. "This incredibly difficult decision has been made to help protect the long-term future of the wider leisure centre, ensuring we can continue to serve our community through our pool, gym, fitness classes, and wellbeing programmes. "We know how disappointing this news will be for many. Our thoughts are especially with our dedicated ice team, and all the clubs, coaches, and Skate Pass members who are being contacted directly. "We understand how deeply this affects everyone who has built a strong and passionate community around the rink — and we share in that disappointment. "Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we focus on keeping Moray Leisure Centre a place for health, connection and community." Major card chain with 163 shops launches closing down sales ahead of shutting its doors for good The devastating news of the ice rink's permanent closure shocked locals. The Moray Figure Skating Club posted to their Facebook page: "We have heard now directly from MLC that they plan to permanently close the ice rink on 4th August, due to spiralling costs. "If there is any way of fighting this then we will of course explore any options." Local leaders have even vowed to work with leisure centre chiefs to help find a solution to their soaring energy bills. Moray Council Leader, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: "Moray Council is aware of the decision by the Moray Leisure Ltd Board to close the ice rink at Moray Leisure Centre from 4 August 2025. "While this is clearly a difficult decision for them, rising energy costs are being felt across all industries and in homes around the country, so it's also an understandable measure to take to ensure financial viability for the rest of the facility. "I appreciate this disappointing news will be devastating for the clubs who use the ice rink regularly and can confirm Moray Council will continue to work with the Board and management team to help identify and implement energy saving measures and facility efficiencies." Moray MSP Richard Lochhead added: "The closure of Moray's only ice rink will come as a huge blow given the popularity of the facility with local families, figure skating and other clubs. "Indeed, this morning I passed young people enjoying themselves as they skated on the ice when I was down at the Leisure Centre and now we have an announcement that it is to close. "Moray Leisure Centre is not alone in struggling with soaring energy costs and inflation, with nearby ice facilities in Inverness and Aberdeen having to turn to crowdfunding to covering increasing costs. "Tackling energy costs and ensuring that we benefit from the massive energy resources on our doorstep should be top of the UK Government's agenda. "In the meantime I intend to meet Moray Leisure Centre's Management in the coming days and have written urgently to the Scottish Government ask if anything can be done to help and seeking advice on how we can support Moray and Scotland's ice rinks that are such high users of energy. "I'm also seeking clarity from Moray Council on its response due to its significant interest in the centre and the fact that none of us will want to see Moray lose its only ice rink."
