Morrisons reports growth in Q1 2024/25 with sales up 2.4%

Yahoo28-03-2025
British supermarket Morrisons has reported that its total sales for the first quarter (Q1) of the fiscal year 2024/25 (FY24/25) rose 2.4%, bringing the figure to £4.0bn ($5.1bn).
Within the period, the retailer witnessed a 2.1% rise in like-for-like (LFL) sales, alongside a record high number of card-linked sales, which now account for 78% of total sales, with rewards available on every product.
Morrisons also identified additional cost savings of £56m during the quarter, contributing to an overall saving of £668m since the commencement of its cost-cutting initiatives.
The retailer has revised its savings target from £700m to £1bn over the medium term.
Over the quarter, the company bolstered its leadership team by appointing Andrew Staniland as group trading director for food, Matt Heslop as director of convenience and wholesale, and Matt McLellan as group data and media director.
Morrisons chief executive Rami Baitiéh stated: 'Despite a challenging environment, Morrisons has made exceptional progress in a very short time and that is entirely down to the hard work, positivity, talent and customer focus of the colleagues in our stores, in our food-making sites and in our operations across the country.'
In a separate development, Morrisons is introducing "Mums-only" checkouts in all its stores for one day - Mothers Day 2025, celebrated on Sunday 30 March.
This one-day event will see the retailer open 497 "Mums' Lanes".
Morrisons marketing events head Gareth Lloyd said: 'The reality is that many mums still end up doing chores like the weekly shop on Mother's Day – even though it is supposed to be the day that they are spoiled! Therefore, we've launched Mums' Lanes in stores to give a little something back to all the mums shopping with us on their special day.'
The retailer recently unveiled a comprehensive plan that includes closure of 17 convenience stores, 13 florist shops and others to revitalise its business operations.

Pound to dollar outlook: UBS sees GBP/USD rising to 1.40

-- The British GBP/USD is expected to continue its upward trend against the U.S. dollar, with UBS forecasting GBP/USD to reach 1.40 by September 2026. In a recent report, UBS analysts Patrick Ernst and Constantin Bolz noted that GBP/USD has recovered most of its July dip, primarily due to a short-lived USD rebound. The currency pair has re-established the 1.35 level, with further potential gains anticipated. U.K. factors have also supported the pound's strength, with the latest Bank of England meeting being interpreted as hawkish. The U.K.'s July inflation data further reinforced this sentiment and provided additional support for the GBP. UBS expects the dollar weakness trend to continue for the rest of the year, though with some volatility. Factors weighing on the dollar include the outlook for lower Federal Reserve rates, policy uncertainty from the White House, the new US fiscal package, and international investors shifting toward higher hedge ratios for dollar assets. The Bank of England is expected to implement rate cuts only on a quarterly basis due to persistent inflationary pressures. This positions the pound as a leading carry trade candidate within the G10, comparable to the high-yielding USD. UBS has set a year-end target of 1.39 for GBPUSD, with forecasts of 1.39 for March 2026, 1.40 for June 2026, and 1.40 for September 2026. The analysts identified 1.33 as a major support level from current positions, while 1.38 represents an important resistance level that will likely be broken later this year. Risk factors to this outlook include a more protracted easing of the U.K. labor market, inflation falling more quickly than expected, potential issues with the U.K.'s fiscal situation, and the possibility of the Federal Reserve adopting a more hawkish stance than anticipated. Almost £500m wiped off WH Smith after accounting error

Almost £500m has been wiped off WH Smith's market value after the retailer revealed a £30m accounting error. WH Smith warned investors on Thursday that expected profits at its North American business had been significantly overstated, with the division expected to bring in £25m this year, down from previous forecasts of £55m. It means the company's full-year profits are expected to be around £110m, not the £140m that analysts had previously expected. The blunder led to WH Smith shares falling by 37pc on Thursday. This knocked £491m off the company's value and sent the company's shares to their lowest level in 12 years. They are currently on track to record their largest-ever one-day fall. Bosses blamed the accounting error on the 'accelerated recognition of supplier income', which led to profits being overstated. The company's head office is understood to have been alerted to the issue in the last week. Max Izzard, the chief financial officer, has since flown out to America to settle the matter. WH Smith has also called in Deloitte to conduct an independent review, with more details likely to be revealed when the company releases full-year profits towards the end of the year. 'In preparation for the Group's year-end results for the financial year ending August 31 2025, a current financial review has identified an overstatement of around £30m of expected headline trading profit in North America', WH Smith said. 'This overstatement is largely due to the accelerated recognition of supplier income in the North America division.' WH Smith's North America business comprises 320 airport stores under names including District Market and Flight Stop, as well as franchised stores for brands such as Lego and Harley Davidson. The company is focused on its lucrative travel business after agreeing to sell its 480 high street stores to the investment company Modella Capital. The deal has led to the WH Smith name disappearing from the high street after more than 230 years, with the stores being rebranded as TG Jones – a fictional name chosen to sound similar to WH Smith. London stocks retreat; investors await Jackson Hole symposium

By Ragini Mathur (Reuters) -Britain's main stock indexes declined on Thursday, dragged by losses in consumer-related shares, while global investors turned their attention to the U.S. Federal Reserve's annual symposium in Jackson Hole. As of 1016 GMT, the blue-chip FTSE 100 <.FTSE 100> was down 0.2%, and the midcap index FTSE 250 declined 0.5%. The three-day gathering of central bankers is set to begin later in the day, with investors particularly focused on Fed Chair Jerome Powell's Friday speech for signals about a potential interest rate cut in September. In the UK markets, consumer shares fell 0.3%, weighing on the stock indexes. Healthcare shares also declined 0.4%. Travel retailer WH Smith slumped 41.7% and was on track for its worst single-day decline on record, after it lowered annual profit outlook. Stocks including InterContinental Hotels Group, Schroders, Entain and Mondi fell as they traded ex-dividend. The pullback comes a day after the FTSE 100 hit a record close, benefiting from a market rotation away from technology stocks that had triggered a selloff on Wall Street earlier this week. "While the FTSE's lack of tech stocks meant it has underperformed in recent years, the recent rotation into value has put the wind in the FTSE's sails," said Fiona Cincotta, senior market analyst at City Index. Supporting the gains on Thursday, aerospace and defence companies rose 1.1%. Energy sector added 0.5% as oil prices gained, bolstered by signs of strong demand in the U.S. and uncertainty over efforts to end the war in Ukraine. [O/R] On the economic data front, PMI figures for August revealed the British businesses are having their strongest month in a year thanks to a rebound in the dominant services sector. Additionally, Britain's public borrowing in the financial year so far has matched forecasts underpinning the government's tax and spending plans.
