Jays stars soak up MLB All-Star Game history; Freeman feels the love from Atlanta
Tied 6-6 after nine innings, the National League beat the Jays and their fellow American League stars 4-3 in the first-ever home run swing-off as MVP Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies hit three home runs to give the NL the deciding edge.
Guerrero Junior, who started at first base for the American League, went 1-for-2 at the plate in his fifth All-Star game appearance.
He was struck out by Los Angeles Dodgers veteran Clayton Kershaw in the second inning, then hit a single line drive to centre-field in the fourth off of David Peterson of the New York Mets.
Kirk replaced Seattle Mariners' starting catcher Cal Raleigh — who won the Home Run Derby on Monday — in the bottom of the sixth inning with the National League ahead 2-0. He watched Pete Alonso of the New York Mets launch a three-run homer, then Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks had a solo shot to make it 6-0.
Kirk led off the top off the seventh with a line drive single to centre-field off of San Diego Padres' pitcher Adrian Morejon, then came around to score when Brent Rooker of the Athletics connected for a three-run homer, slicing the American League's deficit to 6-4.
Kirk flied out to right field in the top of the eighth off of pitcher Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Freddie Freeman of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who played 12 seasons for the Atlanta Braves, received a standing ovation when introduced as the National League's starting first baseman.
Freeman, whose parents Fredrick and Rosemary are both from Ontario but moved the California because of work commitments, hit a ground ball to third and was thrown out at first in his only appearance at the plate. He came out of the game in the third inning.
Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays, who lead the American League East by two games over the New York Yankees and three over the surging Boston Red Sox — who have won 10 games in a row — take a 55-41 record into the post-break schedule.
The Jays, who are 9-3 in July, host a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants starting Friday, then entertain the Yankees for a three-game series starting Monday.

'It felt like we needed to do what we could to try to bolster the team,' the chief baseball officer said. 'I've been pretty outspoken about that. We pursued as much as we possibly could . . . Advertisement The Red Sox were linked in various reports to Minnesota All-Star starter Joe Ryan, who would have been a strong No. 2 behind ace Garrett Crochet; Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who would have moved to first base; and at least a pair of other starters, the Padres' Dylan Cease and the Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly. ' May, 27, and Matz, 34, are due to reach free agency after this season. With the Dodgers this season, May owned a 4.85 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 104 innings, more than he totaled over his previous four injury-plagued seasons. May was second on the Dodgers in starts (18) and innings (104) but was getting squeezed out of the rotation as others returned to health. Tyler Glasnow came back on Tuesday, and Blake Snell is set to do so Saturday. With Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Clayton Kershaw, Shohei Ohtani, and Emmet Sheehan also on the roster, Los Angeles deemed May expendable. Breslow described May as 'a tried and true and battle-tested starting pitcher, coming from an organization that has had a ton of postseason success.' The Dodgers have been a perennial postseason presence through May's career, but he has pitched just 14 innings across nine games in October — and none since 2020. The Sox did not have a No. 5 starter on the roster — and haven't named a starter for Friday against the Astros — so May represents an upgrade over in-house options. They recently demoted Richard Fitts to Triple A Worcester and have had injuries ravage the depth chart. Advertisement 'What we see in Dustin is a guy who really limits hard contact, who keeps the ball on the ground at a strong rate,' Breslow said. 'We feel like that's something that will play well here at our park. He's battle tested, has premium stuff, a bona fide starter that can take the ball for us every five days.' The Sox view Matz as a late-innings option out of the bullpen, according to Breslow. With St. Louis, Matz had a 3.44 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 32 appearances (two starts), frequently covering more than an inning. He handled some high-leverage duties, picking up seven holds. 'If you look at what he's done out of the 'pen, he's been really, really good,' Breslow said. Headed to the Dodgers for May: corner outfielder/first baseman James Tibbs III, who was one of the players acquired from the Giants for Rafael Devers in June, plus outfielder Zach Ehrhard. Tibbs, 22, had gotten off to a slow start with Double-A Portland, batting .207/.319/.267 while playing mostly right field with some left, first base, and DH. Ehrhard, also 22, was the Sox' 13th-round draft pick in 2021 and fourth-rounder in 2024. He had spent most of the season with Portland, posting a .227/.305/.412 slash line. With the Sox, Tibbs and Ehrhard were blocked in the outfield, by both the group of high-quality options in the majors in addition to the likes of Jhostynxon Garcia with Triple-A Worcester. The cost for Matz was corner infielder Blaze Jordan, who was having a strong year in the upper minors and now is reunited with Cardinals executive Chaim Bloom, who ran the Red Sox when they drafted him in 2020. 'I understand the frustration and the disappointment [from fans] because we're all looking at the last week right now in terms of the trades that were made and weren't made,' Breslow said. 'There's not a lot of sympathy for how hard we tried to get deals across the line. I understand that. We believe we have a really young, exciting, talented team, and one that is capable of continuing to perform at this level and make it to the postseason.' Many of the teams the Red Sox are trying to beat in the AL — particularly the Yankees, Mariners, Rangers, and perhaps even the Royals in the wild-card standings — were more active. 'We can't ignore what other teams are doing,' Breslow said. 'At the same time, our focus today was identifying and pursuing players who we felt like were good fits for our team. And ultimately, we're all going to be defined by what happens tomorrow through the last game of the season and potentially the playoffs. 'It's really easy to sit here today and evaluate the trades that were made and how much better we think teams got on paper. Ultimately, those questions are going to be answered for us.' Teams called about Aroldis Chapman, but Red Sox weren't interested in a trade
It would have been, of course, a signal that the Red Sox did not intend to qualify for the postseason. 'Everybody kind of makes these calls to figure out what might gain traction and what wouldn't,' Breslow continued. 'But we're a much better team when [manager Alex Cora ] can call down to the bullpen and get Chapman up for the ninth inning with a lead.' Enter Email Sign Up Chapman, 37, joined the Sox on a one-year, $10.75 million contract in December. Working as a full-time closer for the first time since 2021, Chapman has been dominant. Advertisement Among 187 relievers with at least 30 innings, he ranks fourth in ERA (1.29), fourth in WHIP (0.81), third in strikeout rate (38.8 percent), and third in fWAR (1.6). In his career, Chapman has been traded twice at deadline — and went on to win the World Series both times. The Cubs sent Gleyber Torres to the Yankees for him in 2016. In 2023, he fetched standout starter Cole Ragans (plus a minor leaguer) for the Royals, who sent him to the Rangers. Advertisement The Sox, of course, holding the second American League wild-card spot, had no intention of moving him. That was true for the rest of the big league roster, too. 'Over the last two to three weeks, it became clear that all 26 guys on our roster were contributing to what we were doing,' Breslow said. 'It was best to leave that group as it was and tried to use what I think is a strong and deep system to try to improve the team.' Holding pattern for Mayer, Houck Two of the Red Sox' injured players — infielder Marcelo Mayer and righthander Tanner Houck — should have clarity soon about the fate of their season. Mayer is seeking a second opinion on his strained right wrist, Breslow said, before he and the team 'determine what the right course is.' He declined to say what the first opinion was. 'It's pretty common practice at this point just to get multiple opinions, make sure that there is alignment in terms of what is happening, what the best course is,' Breslow said. Breslow added that he plans to talk Friday to Houck, who has been seeking additional information from doctors about his strained right flexor pronator, which has sidelined him since mid-May (and with which he experienced a setback in mid-July). 'He is trying to weigh all of the information, what the right course is,' Breslow said. Big weekend for Bregman An interesting few days for Alex Bregman got yet more interesting prior to the trade deadline: His former team, the Astros, re-acquired his longtime teammate, Carlos Correa , from the Twins. Correa will make his Houston re-debut at Fenway Park in a series that begins Friday. He will play not his usual shortstop, but third base — Bregman's old spot. Grading the Red Sox' trade deadline
For a team that already has lefties Brennan Bernardino, Chris Murphy, and Justin Wilson in its middle relief group, Matz seems a bit superfluous. But he's capable of going multiple innings and throws strikes. If nothing else, he should be an upgrade over Murphy, who has pitched well this season but has only 30 games of major league experience. He has a 5.07 earned run average over 18 starts and has pitched beyond the sixth inning only three times this season. May is a very talented, occasionally dominant pitcher who hasn't been able to stay healthy. With Blake Snell ready to come off the injured list, May was expected to go to the bullpen. Now he'll get a reprieve from the Red Sox. Diamondbacks righthander Merrill Kelly would have been a great fit. But he went to the Rangers for three pitching prospects ranked fifth, ninth and 13th Advertisement The equivalent for the Red Sox would have been roughly Connelly Early, Luis Perales, and David Sandin. That's a lot for a player who will be a free agent after the season. But the Sox, who haven't been to the postseason since 2021, hold a playoff spot with 52 games remaining. At some point you have take risks. Breslow said there were no 'untouchables' in his much-improved farm system. 'I don't think this is about an unwillingness to include guys or anything like that,' he said. 'Teams have to like our players in order for [trades] to happen.' When Breslow traded Rafael Devers to the Giants in June, he flew to Seattle the next day to meet with the players face-to-face and explain why he made the move. He told them that he had not given up in the season. The Sox were 37-36 at the time and are now 59-51. The players did their part. This team has overcome a lot. Devers was a distraction from spring training until he was traded. Triston Casas was lost to a season-ending knee injury in early May. Related : Kutter Crawford will miss the entire season because of injuries. Tanner Houck, an All-Star last season, was awful for nine starts and has been on the injured list since May 13. It's been a mess, but the Sox are positioned to make the playoffs. There were owed more than a middle reliever and a No. 5 starter, especially when the Astros, Mariners, Tigers, Rangers, Blue Jays, and Yankees all made significant additions. Advertisement 'We were kind of uncomfortably aggressive in trying to pursue [better players] and the players that we were willing to put into deals,' Breslow said. 'Ultimately, it wasn't from a lack of effort.' Team president Sam Kennedy, who speaks for ownership, has said it is time for the Sox to compete after three seasons of mediocrity. They showed that with an aggressive offseason that included the grade for Garrett Crochet. The trade deadline represents a second — and final — chance for teams to correct their flaws.
