Sabah proposes two new road links to Kalimantan
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said one new alignment to the Kalimantan border is currently under construction in Kalabakan, while another in Pensiangan is still in the procurement stage.
He said the project to construct a new road from Kalabakan to the Malaysia–Malaysia-Indonesia border is underway, covering a 28-kilometre stretch.
"This alignment includes the construction of a new road connecting the existing Sapulut–Kalabakan Road to the Malaysia–Indonesia border, covering 28km, and a spur road to Kampung Serudong Laut, spanning 20km.
"The Federal Government, via the Works Ministry, has approved the preliminary study and design for this project under the Rolling Plan 3 of the 12th Malaysia Plan (RP3 RMK-12).
"At present, field works such as land surveying, utility mapping, and soil investigation are actively being carried out to gather data and information needed to complete the project study and design," he said during the Sabah State Legislative Assembly sitting today.
He was responding to a question from Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob (GRS – Sindumin) on the status of new road construction projects connecting Sabah with Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Shahelmey, who is also the Sabah Works Minister, said another project is a proposed road leading to the Bantul border in Pensiangan.
The project has already been approved under RP3 RMK-12, as part of the rural road programme funded by the Federal Government through the Rural and Regional Development Ministry. It is currently in the procurement stage.
In response to a supplementary question by Yusof on other potential routes along the Sabah–Kalimantan border, particularly in Sipitang, Shahelmey said only the two proposed alignments are set to be implemented for now.
He added that currently, there are no proposals for a road linking Long Pasia in Sipitang to North Kalimantan, due to the considerable distance of the border from the main road networks.
"For the proposed route on the southwest coast, compared to the Kalabakan–Sapulut–Simanggaris Road, that alignment is meant for connectivity. But for Long Pasia, the border is quite far, it would be more feasible to connect Ba' Kelalan in Sarawak to Lun Bawang in North Kalimantan.
"This could be included under the proposed Sabah–Sarawak Link Road, which is currently being implemented in Sarawak," he said.

Chow also emphasised the need for Penang to diversify its economy in a volatile global landscape, citing the reassertion of 'America First' policies and the use of tariffs as geopolitical tools. The DEMP, he said, was a vital tool to ensure that the state was not overly reliant on any single sector or global power. The plan also aligns with the Penang2030 vision and 13th Malaysia Plan's focus on inclusivity and readiness for an ageing population. The DEMP builds upon the success of the previous Digital Transformation Master Plan (DTMP) 2021-2023, which successfully completed or initiated over 60% of its 21 initiatives. These included the #Dah Digital programme, which boosted digital literacy for 18,500 residents, and Penang Connectivity Master Plan, which improved Internet access across the state. The prior plan also saw the establishment of Digital Penang as a hub for data, innovation and smart governance. The recent summit, a collaborative event organised by Digital Penang and supported by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), attracted some 300 participants from over 50 corporate and public sector organisations. Digital Penang chief executive officer (CEO) Ng Kwang Ming said the event was designed to strengthen Penang's role as a digital economy hub by fostering cross-sector collaboration. Key sessions focused on investment opportunities, start-up growth, education and social impact initiatives aimed at enhancing community services and non-governmental organisation outreach through digital accessibility. Immigration raids put off to facilitate digital registration of foreign workers

Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Government on Thursday announced a moratorium on immigration enforcement in Sabah to allow the State to complete its ambitious programme of digitally registering foreign workers. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the move was aimed at helping the State Government gather accurate, centralised biometric data to better manage its large migrant population. 'We agreed today to facilitate the digital registration of foreign nationals by the Sabah Government. For that reason, we will suspend enforcement to give them space to register under this initiative,' Saifuddin told reporters after chairing two joint meetings with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor at Menara Kinabalu. Saifuddin said 113,282 foreign nationals have so far been recorded in the system, mostly plantation workers, but with plans to extend the registration to agriculture, manufacturing, mining and quarry sectors. The database, which stores photos and fingerprints, will enable real-time monitoring, tracking and policy-making based on credible data. Saifuddin stressed that the exercise has nothing to do with granting citizenship or permanent residency, and that citizenship matters were handled separately under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution. At the same meeting, the Special Committee on Citizenship for Sabah processed 1,247 applications, drawn from over 2,000 submitted between 2021 and 2024, covering categories such as children born out of wedlock, those in care homes and applicants whose parents are non-citizens. The Home Minister also addressed the often-misunderstood plight of the Bajau Laut, or sea gypsies, a stateless community traditionally living in coastal waters off Sabah. He said State-led projects, such as one at Pantai Manis in Semporna, were providing structured settlements and training opportunities in sectors like agriculture and plantations, including at Felda Sahabat, contrary to public perceptions of neglect. 'Far from being abandoned, there are efforts to house them on land and train them for work in various fields. These are rarely reported, so people don't see the State Government's ongoing work,' he said. Turning to the high-profile death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, Saifuddin confirmed that Bukit Aman's special task force had found serious procedural failures by local police, including a decision not to proceed with a post-mortem despite having no legal barrier to do so. He said the exhumation had been completed and preliminary forensic findings were consistent with earlier medical examinations. The results have been shared with Zara's mother and her lawyer. 2026 Budget: East-West Highway upgrades a priority for Works Ministry
KUALA KANGSAR: The East-West Highway (JRTB), particularly the Gerik-Jeli stretch, is among the key priorities for the Works Ministry under the upcoming 2026 Budget, said Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. He said the ministry has submitted a request for funding to upgrade several sections of the route, citing urgent safety needs. However, the exact allocation will depend on the government's final decision. "It's not a special allocation, we've included it under regular funding requests for the JRTB," he told reporters after the official opening of the Sultan Muzzaffar Shah Bridge at Dataran Manong today. Earlier, the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah officially inaugurated the bridge. Also present were Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, his wife Datin Seri Aezer Zubin, as well as Public Works director-general Datuk Roslan Ismail. As part of ongoing safety measures along the JRTB, Nanta said 385 solar-powered streetlights have been installed in high-risk areas and dangerous bends, commonly known as 'black spots'. "These are not for the entire highway, only for critical sections identified through our assessments," he said, adding that damaged guardrails, signboards and road markings are also being repaired or replaced. Nanta also announced the launch of the MYJalan mobile app, which aims to enable the public to report road damage and submit feedback directly to the ministry. "Perak has been chosen as the first state to launch the MYJalan initiative, reflecting our commitment to public feedback and road safety," he said. He said the JRTB's condition had been a concern since the start of his tenure and described the highway as not only a vital interstate link but also a key part of the country's road development history. Data collected via the app, he noted, has already supported federal funding requests, leading to repair and upgrade works along the JRTB and other federal roads in Perak. – Bernama
