'I will know in minutes if we can make deal': Donald Trump on meeting with Vladimir Putin; talks on Russia-Ukraine peace deal
Donald Trump
on Monday said he would know "within minutes" if a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is possible when he meets Russian President Vladimir Putin later this week.
"We're going to have a meeting with Vladimir Putin and ...
probably in the first two minutes, I'll know exactly whether or not a deal can be made," Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday.
When reporter asked, "how will you know that?"
The US President responded saying, "Because that's what I do — I make deals."
Trump said this shortly after taking control of the Washington, DC, police department and deploying the National Guard.
Trump further said he aimed to have "constructive conversations" with the Russian leader and wanted to see "a ceasefire very, very quickly."
"I'm going to speak to Vladimir Putin and I'm going to be telling him, you've got to end this war. And he wasn't going to mess with me...But I thought it was very respectful that the president of Russia is coming to our country as opposed to us going to his country or even a third-party place, but I think we'll have constructive conversations," Trump said.
He also revealed plans to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders immediately after the talks.

"The next meeting will be with Zelenskyy and Putin, or Zelenskyy, Putin and me," Trump said, further adding that, "I'll be there if they need me, but I want to have a meeting set up between the two leaders."
The US president also criticised Zelenskyy for ruling out territorial concessions without constitutional approval.
"I mean, he's got approval to go into war and kill everybody. But he needs approval to do a land swap?" Trump said, adding that "there'll be some land swapping going on."
At one point, Trump mistakenly said he was "going to Russia on Friday."
The meeting is actually set for Friday, August 15, in Alaska, a state that has not been part of Russia since its sale to the US in 1867.
The far northern state was chosen for its symbolic location across the Bering Strait from Russia's easternmost point.
It will be Putin's first visit to the United States in a decade; his last trip was to New York in 2015 for the UN General Assembly
Announcing the meeting last week on Truth Social, Trump called it "the highly anticipated meeting" between the President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin of Russia which "will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska."

TVK not alternate, but primary force that will win: Vijay
Madurai: The second state conference of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to be held in Madurai on Aug 21 will set the stage for 'Vaagai Soodum Varalaru Thirumbugiradhu: Vetri Peraniyil Tamil Nadu' (History of victory returns: Tamil Nadu on march to victory) election campaign, party founder Vijay said on Tuesday. The slogan is seen by some as alluding to former chief minister MGR's victory. In a statement, Vijay said the campaign will target the ideological and political enemies of TVK and aim for victory. "In Madurai, the place where three branches of the Tamil language were nurtured, without any compromises, we will fight against our ideological and political enemies and win this war for democracy," he said. He extended an open invitation to his supporters for the conference. The actor-turned politician said the goal of the conference was to cement the party's stance on creating good governance for the people of Tamil Nadu. "We are not an alternate force. We will show the world that we are a primary force that will reclaim victory," he added. SGPC, DSGMC clash over Guru Tegh Bahadur martyrdom anniv
Amritsar: A war of words has erupted between the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) over the observance of Guru Tegh Bahadur's martyrdom anniversary, after SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami accused DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka of hastily announcing commemoration programmes without coordination with the SGPC. Kalka, in the recent past, wrote a letter to Dhami urging that the commemoration functions should be held jointly, which would reflect the spirit of Panthic unity. "Since Guru Sahib attained martyrdom at the site of Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib in Delhi, the main functions will be centred there," the letter stated, while adding that these commemoration events will be presided over by the SGPC. Responding to this, Dhami on Tuesday questioned, "Why was Kalka's proposal limited to a letter while he was independently announcing programmes and holding meetings with different organisations?" Dhami said that the DSGMC president should not have hastily announced his own programmes, but rather coordinated with the SGPC. In reply to Dhami's response, Kalka said that DSGMC requested the SGPC president to play the role of an elder brother in organising the 350th martyrdom anniversary commemorations of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib. He said, in the recent past, he held meetings with various Panthic organisations in Amritsar during which the representatives of the SGPC were also present, who assured that they would not create any disruption in the events being organised by the DSGMC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brandi's Journey: Life After Storage Wars Paperela Undo DSGMC general secretary, Jagdeep Singh Kahlon, said DSGMC has the primary right to organise the 350th martyrdom commemorations of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, as both the Guru's martyrdom and his final rites took place in Delhi. Citing this, he said the DSGMC sought support from all Panthic institutions and sects, who, in turn, assured their full cooperation. Giving further details, Kalka said that with the support of the Sangat, the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib will be commemorated on a grand scale, in a way that will be remembered across the world. The historic events will be held not only at Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib, the site of Guru Sahib's martyrdom, and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib, where his last rites were performed, but also at the Red Fort. These events will witness participation from the country's top leadership, he claimed. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). White House orders major Smithsonian review to remove divisive content and highlight American values
The White House is doing a full internal review of exhibits and materials at the Smithsonian Institution, which runs many major public museums in the U.S. This review follows President Donald Trump's order about what should and should not be shown in these museums. A letter from three top Trump aides—Lindsey Halligan, Vince Haley, and Russell Vought—tells Smithsonian secretary Lonnie Bunch III that the review aims to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan stories, and restore public trust in cultural institutions. Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order accusing the Smithsonian of promoting "divisive, race-centered ideology" that portrays American and Western values negatively. Vice President JD Vance was assigned to stop government spending on exhibits or programs that divide Americans by race or conflict with federal law and policy, as per the report by CNN. It will look at the content shown to visitors in the museums, how items are selected for the exhibits, and the plans for current and future exhibitions. The review will also check how materials and collections are used, and the rules for the stories and information that are shared with the public. In the first phase, the review will cover eight Smithsonian museums located in Washington, DC. Live Events These include the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, as per reports. Smithsonian's response to the plan More museums will be included in a second phase, but those will be announced later. The Smithsonian said it is "reviewing" the letter and plans to work 'constructively' with the White House, according to the report by CNN. The Smithsonian stressed its work is based on strong research and factual history and will continue to collaborate with the White House, Congress, and its Board of Regents. The Smithsonian is the world's largest museum group with 21 museums and the National Zoo. Nearly 17 million people visited last year. Almost all museums have free admission. The Smithsonian started its own review in June and says it stays nonpartisan and unbiased in presenting facts and history. It is willing to make changes if needed to meet its standards. The letter asks each museum to name a contact person to share plans for programming about America's 250th anniversary, as stated by CNN report. Within 75 days, voluntary interviews with curators and senior staff will be scheduled by the Trump administration. Within 120 days, museums should start fixing content by removing divisive or ideological language and replacing it with unifying, historically accurate, and constructive descriptions in exhibits and displays. Last month, the National Museum of American History removed a temporary placard about Trump's two impeachments, which caused public criticism. The museum later said the removal was temporary and denied any government pressure. The placard was put back with some changes and placed lower in the exhibit, as per the report by CNN. FAQs Q1.
