Country music musical, "Shucked" brings elevated comedy to Boston audiences

CBS News14-04-2025

The Tony Award-winning musical, "Shucked," has made its way to Boston! The popular performance lets country music and comedy take center stage.
"I think that country music lends itself so well to musical theater because country music is about stories," said actor Miki Abraham.
"The music, I think it's the surprising factor, maybe like the secret weapon of the show," said actor Danielle Wade. She portrays Maizy, a girl on a mission to save her small town's way of life when something goes wrong with the corn.
The actors said the songs lead the way.
"I think country music is so full as an art form. They have so many kinds of instruments, and it really has this warm, cozy feeling. There's a comfortability, a familiarity with country music that really translates in our show, I think," Wade explained.
"Country music is incredible for musical theater, but what makes this show so great is it just sprinkles in all kinds of different genres under the umbrella of country music," said Abraham.
Abraham has called "Shucked" home since its inception. They were part of the pre-Broadway run in Salt Lake City, then transferred with the show onto Broadway, and now follows the show on the road. They're playing Lulu, Maizy's cousin. On Broadway, they were the understudy for the part, which earned Lynn native
Alex Newell
a
Tony award
last year.
"Whenever I was stepping into the role, I was like 'okay, I have to make this my own because there's no way that anyone could ever be Alex Newell,'" said Abraham.
In this comedy, the jokes come fast.
"It is a science up there, and it is so fun," said Wade. "When do you get to laugh for two-and-a-half hours and forget everything else in the world and truly laugh?"
Abraham says, "We always win them over. If there's one person in the audience that is like, 'Oh, I don't like dad jokes. I don't like puns.' There's going to be something that's going to get you to just, 'haha!'"
"The comedy itself is elevated comedy. It seems like it shouldn't be. It's very he-ha adjacent, but it's elevated comedy, " Wade adds. "The audience has to be smart, and the Boston audience is very smart. It's okay to be a little cheesy, a little corny, if you will. It's actually preferred. Maybe a requirement for the rest of life. Be a little corny."
"Shucked" is playing at the
Citizens Opera House in Boston through April 20.

Don Rickles almost mutinied against Martin Scorsese during ‘Casino': ‘You don't have to take this from him!'

Comedy legend Don Rickles got fed up with Martin Scorsese during filming of 'Casino' 30 years ago, the Oscar-winning director revealed. Before a Tribeca Film Festival screening Thursday at the Beacon Theatre celebrating the anniversary of 'Casino,' Scorsese and the film's star Robert De Niro remembered a night when things with Rickles — aka Mr. Warmth — got particularly heated on set. 3 Martin Scorsese reminisced about working with Don Rickles during 'Casino.' Erik Pendzich/Shutterstock Advertisement 3 Rickles, who played Billy Sherbert, died in 2017. Getty Images 'We were in a very tough schedule, and we were all pretty tired,' Scorsese, 82, told the crowd of the Las Vegas night shoots that would start around 11 p.m. 'But by that point, Don couldn't take it anymore. He couldn't, because I was driving him crazy. I'm telling him, 'Don, I'll be ready in an hour. Two hours, three hours later, he was still waiting for us. He was dying. 'Get me out of here!'' Advertisement Scorsese added: 'He yelled at one point to the crew, 'You don't have to take this from him!'' Rickles played Billy Sherbert, the head of security for De Niro's Sam 'Ace' Rothstein. But the director and De Niro mostly shared fond memories of Rickles, who died in 2017. Born in Queens, the comic became a Vegas headliner with the help of friend Frank Sinatra and was eventually synonymous with Sin City. 'Don was really a sweet guy, everybody knew that,' De Niro, 81, said. 'And his style — he could be right on when he was acerbic and insulting, but, you know, deep down he was… a sweet guy.' They were filming at difficult hours in a working casino that even advertised that the famous names were there. 'I was shocked because [the casino] had a kind of a ticker, you know, with a sign outside,' Scorsese said. 'It said, 'Come and watch the shooting: Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Don Rickles — appearing now!' Advertisement Scorsese added: 'I go in, and my A.D., Joseph Reidy, he looked at me, and he said, 'Are you ready?' I said, 'Yes, yes. What's the problem?' He opened the door. A wall of sound.' 'About 10 o'clock at night. Everybody was playing, gambling, and you couldn't quite hear each other,' he said. 'But by around one in the morning, they quieted down.'

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Netflix docuseries back for Season 2: See release date, more Show Caption Hide Caption Need a show to binge? These are the must watch shows this summer USA TODAY's TV critic Kelly Lawler breaks down the best TV shows you don't to want to miss this summer The search to find America's (newest) Sweethearts will kick off shortly. "America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders," a docuseries about the legendary cheer team, returns for its second season on Netflix June 18. The show follows a group of hopefuls as they compete for a spot on the Dallas Cowboys Cheer Team, the pinnacle of professional cheerleading. "There are, of course, the physics-defying kicks and jump splits of 'Thunderstruck,' the squad's signature — and seriously difficult to master — routine set to the AC/DC song. And then, there are the tears and cheers as girls make or are cut from the final team," per Tudum. The big difference between this season and the last is that the pool of dancers auditioning to accompany the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (DCC) through the National Football League's 2024-25 season is that most of them are rookies. Only 23 of 36 veterans will be re-auditioning for a spot. "From Emmy Award-winning director Greg Whiteley and the team behind 'Cheer' and 'Last Chance U,' the fan-favorite series will return to continue giving viewers unfiltered access into this iconic team and franchise," according to Netflix. Here's what we know about Season 2 so far, including how to watch. Watch 'Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders' Season 2 trailer What's 'Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders' Season 2 about? This season picks up ahead of the final round of auditions for the 2024-2025 squad and follows the 36 women who get selected through training camp, cuts, the official team announcement and into the NFL season, according to Tudum. "This season dives deeper into the stories, sisterhood, and sacrifices of the women who wear the stars on and off the field," reads a description of the show. "Get ready for new faces, high stakes, and raw emotion as these athletes redefine what it means to shine under pressure." Which 'Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders' are returning for Season 2? It seemingly takes a village to put together a cheer team, especially one as iconic as this one. "This time around, DCC director Kelli Finglass and head choreographer Judy Trammell work to build yet another impressive team of talented athletes who can wow the world with their high kicks and jump splits as AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck' blasts throughout AT&T Stadium," according to Tudum. Only 23 of 36 veterans are trying out for the team this season, which means DCC will have a larger pool of rookies who are vying for a spot to ultimately make the team. Finglass and Trammel whittled down the nearly 500 new submissions they received to determine the group of hopefuls, made up of veterans and rookies, who will formally audition for a spot on the team. Here are some of the women we know for sure will be in Season 2 (You'll have to tune in to see if your favorite veteran is returning this season.) Coaches: Kelli Finglass, senior director of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Judy Trammell, head choreographer for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Veterans: Armani Chandi Jada KayDianna Kayla H. Kleine Megan Reece Sophy Rookie candidates: Abby Ariel Ava Charly Clare Marie Cooper Dayton Jenna Kelly V. Madie K. More details about the squad members, whom we know about, can be found here.
