PWHL Seattle taps Steve O'Rourke as the expansion team's first coach
The move brings in a newcomer to women's hockey, but someone who is very familiar to the Pacific Northwest having played at Washington State.
'This is something I've thought about since the league was first announced,' O'Rourke said in a statement. 'To now be given the opportunity to work with the best players in the world and be part of a professional league that is thriving both on and off the ice is truly amazing. Being from the West and having played hockey in Washington State, I've seen first-hand how much the game has grown in this region. The passion and support for hockey here is real, and I'm proud to now be part of it in a new way.'
While the roster is still being constructed, O'Rourke will have the benefit of coaching a team featuring four-time Olympian Hilary Knight, who became the first player Seattle signed during the PWHL's expansion process two weeks ago.
'We're proud to welcome Steve as the first head coach in PWHL Seattle's history,' PWHL Seattle general manager Meghan Turner said in a statement. 'He brings a great hockey mind, a clear vision for the game, and a strong commitment to developing both our team and our players as individuals. We're confident in his leadership and excited to start this next chapter with him behind the bench.'
The 50-year-old O'Rourke comes in with 15 years of coaching experience, most recently having worked in the junior ranks with the Ontario Hockey League's Oshawa Generals. He was an assistant with the Generals for two years before being elevated to head coach for the 2024-25 season.
Seattle is already deep at forward, with Turner already envisioning her top two lines. Knight, who finished tied for the PWHL lead with 29 points last season, is also joined by two-time U.S. Olympian Alex Carpenter and Canada's Danielle Serdachny, who was selected by Ottawa as the No. 2 pick in last year's draft.
Seattle will participate in its first PWHL Draft on June 24, when it will make six picks, including the eighth overall selection.

Realmuto hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning, Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott also homered and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Tuesday night. Realmuto's homer was a no-doubt blast to left field on a first-pitch sinker from Seattle reliever Matt Brash (1-2). Realmuto, who hit his ninth homer, reached base three times and had three RBIs. He also had an RBI single and reached on a catcher's interference call on Mariners backstop Mitch Garver. It was the third time in a month the Phillies were on the positive side of a catcher's interference call. Schwarber opened the scoring in the first inning with his 44th homer. He leads the NL in homers and the majors with 104 RBIs. Stott hit his eighth homer of the season, and Bryce Harper drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Phillies benefit a 3rd time on catcher's interference call, this one against Mariners
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — For the third time in less than a month, the Philadelphia Phillies were on the positive end of a catcher's interference call. In the first inning of their game Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners, J.T. Realmuto was called out on strikes on a pitch by Bryce Miller that would have ended the inning. However, Realmuto argued that his swing was interfered with by Seattle catcher Mitch Garver — who was starting behind the plate while usual catcher and MLB homer leader Cal Raleigh was in the lineup as a designated hitter. The Phillies challenged the call, and after a video review, it was determined that Garver's glove did interfere with Realmuto's bat on the swing, and Realmuto was awarded first base. Last month, when Boston was in Philadelphia, catcher Carlos Narvaez was called for inference in consecutive games, in both instances allowing a run to score, one of them to end a game in extra innings. It was the first walk-off catcher's interference since 1971. This time, there was no damage as Miller induced a fielder's choice ground out by Alec Bohm on the first pitch after the review, ending the inning with Seattle trailing 1-0 thanks to Kyle Schwarber's NL-leading 44th homer.
