Teresa Palmer: ‘What's the strangest thing in my fridge? Oh my God – there is slime'

The Guardiana day ago
When was the last time you solved a mystery?
Oh, I'm going big with this answer: the mystery of the phantom pooer. Someone in my family does poos in the toilet and doesn't flush them. They've all been blaming each other. [Palmer has four children and a stepson.]
It got to the point where I really thought it was my husband, because it was in our toilet. So I actually set up a situation where I pretended the other toilet was blocked and they couldn't use it, and I stalked my children after each poo. One time I didn't hear a flush and they ran out to play so I figured out who the phantom pooer was. I won't out which one of my children it was, but it's one of them. I keep saying, 'It's not that hard! You do a poo, you press the flush!'
What's the weirdest thing in your fridge right now?
Let me go have a look. Alright, I have garlic chives. I've got tarragon. I have got peaches in juice. Oh my God, what is this? What is this? I think it's slime. Oh my gosh, it's my son's slime. I thought it was some sort of compote – it is dark red and has chunks in it. There is slime in my fridge.
As a teenager, you worked at the Hungry Jack's in Rundle Mall in Adelaide. Have you ever filmed anything more scary than working at the Hungry Jack's in Rundle Mall?
[laughs] I used to sub at Hungry Jack's in Rundle Mall. I mainly was at Hawthorn. There were some pretty dodgy characters hanging around Rundle Mall back then … I have filmed many, many scary things over my career, but nothing quite compares to the experience of working at Hungry Jack's as a 15-year-old. I'd still go to Rundle Mall to hang out with my little homies in the city. That was the highlight of my weekend. 'Let's go to Rundle Mall! Maybe head to Dazzleland?'
What is the strangest skill you've learned for a role?
Bizarrely, I learned to row for A Discovery of Witches. I learned how to flip my boat and come up the other way, which was really horrifying as someone who is deathly afraid of being underwater. But I became really efficient at it and I broke through my fear.
I had another weird experience when I filmed Point Break in Tahiti – again, underwater. I was strapped to the bottom of the ocean with four sandbags and they take your oxygen out so you can clear your air bubbles. And then you have to act! I had to act in love with someone under the water. When my air would cut out, I would signal with these wide, crazy, panicky eyes. You just have to trust that someone will swim over and give you your regulator back.
I recently turned down a job because they were like 'It'll be three months in the water swimming with whales!' I was like 'Pass! Keep me on dry land.'
Which movie scarred you for life as a kid?
Candyman. It was at my brother's 13th sleepover. I had a big crush on one of his friends, Jesse, so I snuck in to sit with all the boys and sleeping bags and pretend I was a super-cool 11-year-old. I saw the bit with the bees killing people, and I did not sleep without my touch lamp on for about four years. It was terrifying. And I never got to hook up with Jesse.
Who's the most famous person in your phone?
I'll check. You'll have to pick. Paris Hilton. Russell Crowe. Emma Stone. Eva Mendes. Sia?
What's the best lesson you've learned from someone you've worked with?
It's OK to get Uber Eats if you don't like the food at work. I am vegan and it's annoying for people to have to cater to me. This is the people pleaser inside of me. So I always order a vegan garlic bread and a bubble tea. I have that, no joke, every lunchtime when I film. It has got to the point where people will come and give me a heads up on when I should put the order in. When a recent job wrapped, I ordered like 200 garlic breads for everyone on the cast and crew. They were like, 'What have we been snoozing on? This is amazing.' I am the picture of wellness – garlic bread and bubble tea.
What are you secretly really good at?
I'm an encyclopedia for true crime. I know every true crime case. People come to me for recommendations for podcasts, documentaries, TV shows. I can sit and have an in-depth conversation about various cases and theories with anyone. We can get deep real quick – you can just say the first name of someone in a case and I'll know immediately who we're talking about. That's how I find my people.
What book, album or film do you always return to, and why?
Labyrinth. When I used to go to my dad's place as a kid, he didn't quite know how to entertain a little girl so he bought me three VHS tapes and every Sunday I would watch one of the three. The movies were Grease, Labyrinth and A Little Princess.
It was funny to watch Labyrinth again with my children. They're so used to watching Pixar and things with amazing special effects, but the magic was still there. We play the album in the car all day. It still holds firm as my favourite movie.
What's been your most cringeworthy run-in with a celebrity?
This happened about a year ago. I was doing an acting workshop in Byron Bay. We're in the middle of it and this guy pops his head in with his dog, and says 'Oh, what is this?' I told him and he said 'Cool, I've always thought about looking into this.' So I asked what he did and he said he makes music. I was thinking 'That's cute. Are you in a band? Do you perform in the pub?' And someone says 'Holy shit, that's Pete Murray.'
I went to all his concerts. I used to follow him around Australia, watching all these gigs. And I completely didn't recognise him – I thought he was a cute dad who was in a band at the local pub. It was really mortifying. But we had a laugh. I said 'I am so embarrassed – I'm a huge fan of yours.' He invited me and my friends to his gig two months later, so he's not upset I didn't recognise him. He was just so out of context. He is a Byron Bay dad, who knew!

Oprah is also expected to enjoy a private holiday during her time in the country. Oprah's 2010 appearance at the Sydney Opera House had been dramatic, with thousands of people lining nearby streets and filling the forecourt of the iconic harbourside building. Some fans had waited all night for a glimpse of the world's most famous talk show host. It was a cultural moment that saw her film four episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show at the Sydney Opera House, which was temporarily rebranded the 'Oprah House'. That tour brought 300 ecstatic American fans with her and featured headline-grabbing moments, including surprise giveaways, a $250,000 donation to a cancer patient, and Hugh Jackman's headline-making zip-line mishap during a live taping. The trip, which cost Australian taxpayers $5 million, drew criticism at the time — but Oprah maintained it was a worthwhile investment in tourism. The episodes eventually aired in 145 countries, giving global exposure to local landmarks. In another of her surprise splashes of gifts, she gave a cheque worth over $100,000 to a Sydney couple after watching an emotional video in which the husband said he was battling cancer. She also gave everyone in the audience a silver necklace with an 'O' pendant. Oprah rose to fame as actor in Steven Spielberg's 1985 hit film The Color Purple. She later transitioned to television, launching a long and celebrated career as a talk show host.

The Irish centre held his hands up on his shocker in Sydney on Saturday in a 22-12 defeat, which saw the tourists miss the chance of a Wallaby whitewash. 3 Bundee Aki's wife has given birth to a daughter Credit: Instagram 3 Aki now has five children Credit: Instagram After the Lions failed to clinch a series clean sweep, Aki then announced he had become a father for the fifth time two weeks ago. The 35-year-old has yet to meet new daughter Aine, who was born in the build-up to the opening Test win in Brisbane. Wife Kayla was in New Zealand with family when she got in touch to say she was ready to give birth before he helped the Lions to a 27-19 triumph. Aki recalled: 'Credit to my wife. She's a powerful woman. I was in the hotel in Brisbane and I knew we were overdue. 'Ten minutes later, she video calls me and I was like, 'S**t, what's going on?' I saw a baby on the video call, so she had it in the car. 'They're both healthy. But their old man admitted he put in nothing close to an A-star performance in Sydney as the Lions were mauled in a monsoon. The game was suspended after half-time for 38 minutes due to lightning, with the Aussies 8-0 up through Dylan Pietsch's try and a penalty. Finn Russell was spotted in the dressing room flicking through his phone and Aki had his feet up on a bean bag before play resumed. But the Wallabies struck twice after the delay to get the victory. Aki had his worst game in an international shirt but fronted up. He said: 'I wasn't great. It was a poor game but you have those days and you have to live with it. 'We won the series and that's all we came for. 'Now, I want to enjoy my break. I haven't seen my family for eight weeks. I have a newborn child I haven't met yet.' Australia got it over the line thanks to a turbo-charged display from lock Will Skelton, who was on the wind-up all match, and second-half tries from Max Jorgensen and Tate McDermott. Jac Morgan and Will Stuart crossed to give the Lions some consolation — but Skelton had shown the Aussies the way. Wallabies scrum-half Nic White said: 'For once, someone stood up to them.'

Lions star Aki's baby born in car before first Test

In the aftermath of the British and Irish Lions' third Test against Australia in Sydney, a beaming Bundee Aki was riffing about all sorts of topics included the series win being the greatest achievement of his career, the special bonds forged between the players and how he would love to see Andy Farrell go again as Lions coach in he mentioned something extraordinary, almost in passing - his wife Kayla had given birth to their fifth child in a car on her way to the hospital before the first Test of the what he wanted to do now, the New Zealand-born Ireland centre replied: "I want to enjoy my break, my family time."I haven't seen my family for eight weeks. I have a newborn child who I haven't met yet."Pardon?"Yep, a girl. She was born when we were playing in Brisbane, so I haven't met her. Her name is Aine, so I'm looking forward to going and meeting her," he to my wife," he went much credit to Kayla, who has now given birth to the couple's fifth child. The first was born in hospital and the next three at home, while Aine entered the world in the back of a car en route to a hospital in New Zealand, where the rest of the Akis were visiting family, as Bundee and the Lions prepared for the first Test in remarkable scene happened mid-tour and never got out in public. "She's a powerful woman, a strong woman. If you only knew the story of what happened, it's a funny story in itself," the 35-year-old that point, Aki was faced with a gaggle of journalists desperate for the full story. We have journeyed around Australia for six weeks looking for gold like this and here we were, literally doing the last player interview of the entire trip and the greatest tale of the tour was tumbling out in front of us."Have we got time?" asked the Connacht player. He may as well have asked if we would like a free lunch."It was a good day. I was in the team hotel. I knew we were overdue. The missus calls me and she's like, 'My water hasn't broken but I'm going to the hospital, I'm feeling contractions'."We were getting ready for the team meeting pre-match and she calls back and says she's now on the way to the hospital."Five minutes later, she sends a photo - her water had broken. I was like, 'Cool, OK, are you almost there?' This is like 30 or 40 minutes away from the hospital. I said, 'You'll be all right, Mum is there'."Ten minutes later, she video calls. I was like, 'What's going on?' - and I saw a baby on the video call. She had it in the car on the way to the hospital. They're both strong and healthy, so happy days." Aki was not in the 23-man squad for the first Test, but after the arrival of Aine he was confident the Lions would get the result they duly won 27-19 after blitzing the Wallabies in the first half and secured the series - with Aki now in the side - in Melbourne the following week."I knew it was good 'Juju' [a magical property bringing good luck]. I knew we were going to have a good day," he added."All my kids start with A and my wife loved the name Aine. That's five As in the family - Armani, Adrianna, Andronicus [their one son], Ailbhe, and now Aine."Now that the series is over, the Lions players are scattering this way and that. Some are flying home, some are exploring Australia, others are venturing to different climes in search of a matter how amazing their destinations turn out to be, none of them will be as special as the place Aki is now heading for.
