Ravens' 370-pound prospect from Nigeria has 'come light years'

Ravens' 370-pound prospect from Nigeria has 'come light years' originally appeared on The Sporting News It's hard to miss C.J. Okoye. That's how it works when someone is 6-foot-6 and 370 pounds. But he's also making his presence felt on the football field with his play now, too. Okoye had a sweet rush of the QB in Baltimore's preseason opener before knocking Daniel Jones to the ground. Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Okoye is "making good use of all that size he has" and that "he's come light years." MORE: Shedeur Sanders shows his NFL Draft slide might've been a mistake Okoye grew up playing basketball in Nigeria, but he eventually was invited to a football camp hosted by former Giants star Osi Umenyiora that tries to identify football talent from African countries. That earned him an invite to the 2022 NFL Africa camp in Ghana, and he played offensive line there. It was then on to the NFL International Combine in London, where he was one of 13 players chosen for the NFL's International Pathway Program. And from there, he trained at IMG Academy in Florida and was one of eight guys who made the final cut that year. Okoye was allocated to the Los Angeles Chargers, now as a defensive lineman. He recorded a sack in his first preseason game, the first organized football game he had ever played in. MORE: Taylor Swift is coming on Travis Kelce's podcast The Chargers kept him on their practice squad each of the past two seasons. This offseason, the Ravens signed Okoye to a reserve/future contract in January. Now, he's trying to prove he deserves his NFL regular season debut, and he's certainly making an impression. WATCH: John Metchie puts All-Pro defender on skates for 2 TD receptions in practice

John Metchie has been looking for a breakout season since he arrived with the Houston Texans out of Alabama in 2022. Is this the season where it all comes together? Plays like Tuesday against an All-Pro cornerback certainly help out the case. The fourth-year Texans receiver put Derek Stingley Jr. on skates on back-to-back plays during drills at Texans' training camp practice Tuesday morning for touchdown receptions. Both times, he won at the line of scrimmage before waltzing into the end zone for what would have been a score. Here's a look at the clip below. Oh, and the second rep might be even better than the first. Entering a contract season, Metchie is fighting to make the active roster after back-to-back underwhelming seasons. There's reasons to believe he could be the odd man out after a strong performance from Braxton Berrios in Saturday's preseason loss against the Minnesota Vikings. Plays like this, however, will make it challenging to cut ties with the former second-round pick. How he responds in Saturday's preseason outing against the Carolina Panthers could make or break his time in Houston beyond August. Matthew Stafford Sits, But Los Angeles Rams Downplay His Back Ailment

Quarterback Matthew Stafford remains sidelined, and so far, the Los Angeles Rams brass is unconcerned. Stafford, a 17-year pro, has yet to participate in a team practice at training camp because of a back ailment, with the Sept. 7 season-opener against the visiting Houston Texans coming fast for L.A. On Monday, Stafford was scheduled for the first time to take snaps with the full squad, but he wasn't able to go. Tuesday came and went, with Stafford, 37, still cooling his powerful right arm while others worked. Backup Jimmy Garappolo continues to direct the first team as the Rams are running out of time to get Stafford right before the curtain rises on a year in which L.A. is primed to make a deep postseason run. 'This is not nothing,'' said former Ram D'Marco Farr, a member of L.A.'s broadcasting team on 'Good Morning Football'. "It could be a big deal.'' But Rams coach Sean McVay is doing everything possible to prevent L.A. fans from reaching for the panic button. He's been careful to avoid saying that Stafford's injury could be significant. Except even McVay is now tip-toeing on just when Stafford will be ready. Stafford is dealing with an aggravated disc, which plays havoc with his mobility and creates nerve issues. It seems rest is the main tonic for Stafford to rebound, as McVay discounted any notion that Stafford would require surgery. 'Haha, are you kidding?'' McVay said. 'No." McVay continues to show little concern. Whether he's doing that to ease his players' minds or out of respect to Stafford, but there are no guarantees that the condition will get better with time. Although, that is the hope. Also, if Stafford is having issues practicing, the prospects of him playing in a game – and the hits that come with it – can't be a comforting thought for the Rams, no matter how optimistic they are. The Rams need Stafford to get where they want to go. It's a heavy load for Stafford and one that only increases with a barking back.
