Heinz History Center unveils new exhibit revealing rare, unseen artifacts
The Heinz History Center has unlocked its vault to reveal several rarely and never-before-seen objects.
The new exhibit, "Pittsburgh's Hidden History," opened on April 26 and tells stories from Pittsburgh's past with a "thematic journey through artifacts, photographs, and documents that connect with our region's history," according to an accompanying news release.
Visitors can explore objects from iconic Pittsburgh landmarks like The Original Hot Dog Shop, Primanti Bros., Kaufmann's, and Kennywood.
The exhibit also features a getaway sleigh used in a shootout between the Pittsburgh police and the Biddle brothers following a prison break in 1902. The story of prisoners' escape became so famous that a film, "Mrs. Soffel," which starred Mel Gibson and Diane Keaton, was made that details how the inmates escaped the Allegheny County Jail with the help of Kate Soffel, the warden's wife.
This new exhibit marks the first time the sleigh has been on public view in a Heinz History Center exhibit.

Other highlights in the exhibit include a "scary Pittsburgh" section, featuring dolls, clown masks, and the green Vampiress from Kennywood's now-shuttered dark ride, Le Cachot.
Some of the oldest objects in the collection include an 18th-century key to Fort Duquesne and an unfinished flint tool unearthed at Meadowcroft Rockshelter that dates back 14,000 years.
For the Pittsburgh sports fanatic, a 1910 Honus Wagner trading card and the green club jacket worn by Eric Springer, the first African-American member of Oakmont Country Club, are also on display.
Throughout the exhibition run, the History Center will host a series of Hidden History Trivia Nights on select Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m., including May 15, June 12, July 10, Aug. 7, and Sept. 4. These special trivia nights are for guests ages 21 or older.
The exhibition is on view through Oct. 5, 2025.

Baseball isn't boring and the CW isn't stupid, at least when it comes to the Savannah Bananas, the Georgia-based team that has rewritten the rules around the classic American pastime. The network has picked up rights to broadcast the July 27 Bananas game at Citizen's Bank Park in Philadelphia. "Banana Ball" incorporates humor, gymnastics, lip syncs and snappy dance choreography in a minor league baseball game with rules that definitely don't match those of Major League Baseball — though many of the players once had MLB aspirations. This year the team has sold out 18 major league ballparks, plus three football stadiums with capacities of more than 70,000. Hours before the first pitch, the lowest price (fees and taxes included) for a pair of Bananas tickets on StubHub was $209.52, while it took a mere $171.72 to snag a pair of tickets to the Yankees-Dodgers series opener at Dodger Stadium the same night. Trump reportedly to strip Harvey Milk name off naval vessel
WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the Navy to strip the name of slain gay rights icon and San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk off a naval supply vessel, reported Tuesday. The rare step of renaming a naval ship is intended to create 'alignment with president and (Defense Secretary) objectives and (Navy Secretary) priorities of reestablishing the warrior culture,' according to a memo written by Navy Secretary John Phelan's office. This is another step in the Trump administration's efforts to attack any past attempts to highlight American diversity. The planned timing of the announcement for June 13 — days after World Pride will take place in Washington, D.C. — was reportedly intentional, reported. Milk — one of the country's first openly gay elected officials, who was assassinated at City Hall in 1978 days after vanquishing a statewide ballot initiative that would have mandated gay teachers be fired — was a Navy veteran. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and chose to receive an "other than honorable" discharge rather than be court-martialed for being gay. 'As the rest of us are celebrating the joy of Pride Month, it is my hope that the Navy will reconsider this egregious decision and continue to recognize the extraordinary contributions of Harvey Milk, a Veteran himself, and all Americans who forged historic progress for our nation,' Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. The USNS Harvey Milk, a supply vessel that brings food, fuel and repair parts to other U.S. Navy vessels and allies at sea, was named in 2016 and christened and launched in 2021. The USNS Harvey Milk is one of 17 vessels built to honor civil rights heroes, including civil rights activist Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, women's rights activist Lucy Stone and abolitionist Sojourner Truth. 'The reported decision by the Trump Administration to change the names of the USNS Harvey Milk and other ships in the John Lewis-class is a shameful, vindictive erasure of those who fought to break down barriers for all to chase the American Dream,' Pelosi said. The Navy rarely renames ships, however two ships were renamed in 2023 after a congressional commission recommended doing so due to associations with the Confederacy.
