Special leave for Road Accident Fund CEO as SIU investigates
Road Accident Fund (RAF) CEO Collins Letsoalo has been placed on special leave with immediate effect.
In a statement, the Department of Transport said Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa, as the delegated shareholder representative, had been informed by the RAF board of Letsoalo's special leave.
The decision was made at a special meeting on Tuesday.
'The CEO will be on special leave until the conclusion of the relevant investigations by the Special Investigations Unit, or such earlier date as the board may determine. The board has indicated that this is a precautionary measure and does not constitute disciplinary action or presumption of guilt,' said the department yesterday.
According to the statement, the decision was taken solely in the interest of good governance and as a precautionary step to facilitate ongoing investigative processes.
'It does not imply any prejudgment or adverse finding against the CEO. In making this decision, it must be noted that the board exercised its fiduciary duties in terms of the Road Accident Fund Act 56 of 1996, the Public Finance Management Act 1 of 1999, and in alignment with the principles of good governance as set out in King IV.'
Meanwhile, Phathutshedzo Lukhwareni will serve as the acting CEO to ensure continuity of operations.
The deputy minister has directed that the matter be placed on the agenda for the board meeting he has called for June 9.

Young people equipped with work skills
THE three-day Success Ladder Work Readiness Conference held at The Junction in Kloof recently was described by the 30 young delegates as a fun and interactive experience. 'The objective of the event was to equip people to get the job and keep the job,' said one of the organisers, Adele Benvie, who is also the CEO of the Success Company. She said their Support Services Sector Action Team identified the pain point that candidates are well prepared for the role but don't know how to put their best foot forward when applying for a job or when in a job. Also read: Top skills and careers in demand for 2025 'This results in people not getting the job or keeping their jobs because they perhaps have the skill but are not 'showing up' in a way that shows employers they are a candidate of choice. 'Based on this, the Support Services team then created a work readiness event. The three-day conference was completed with gamification, music, activities, engagement as well as highly impactful and real life skills that prepared people for the workplace so that they can get the job and keep the job,' said Benvie. The modules were presented by industry experts, bringing the latest relevant information to the session. On the third day there was a graduation ceremony where the participants were awarded certificates. One of the attendees, Matthew Powell, said after experiencing the second day of the Success Ladder workshop he had already learnt a lot in a short period. 'From workplace mental health, different ways of communication, leadership and business skills, this is valuable information that has shifted my perspective on different ways of viewing conflicts and challenges and how I interact with them.' He added that the information he received was valuable and that he would cherish it throughout his working career. 'I am blessed to have this opportunity at this time when I am kick-starting my career with this much of a mental head start,' he said. Fraud warning for SASSA black and gold card holders
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Postbank have warned social grant beneficiaries to stay vigilant against a rising wave of fraud targeting holders of both the black Postbank cards and gold SASSA cards. Fraudsters reportedly visit SASSA beneficiaries at their homes while posing as Postbank officials. These imposters deceive individuals into handing over their cards and PINs under false pretences, often claiming that the cards are faulty or that future payments will be blocked unless the information is provided. 'There is nothing that requires fixing on any of its black cards and SASSA gold cards,' Postbank confirmed in a statement. 'Both cards will continue to work beyond 31 May 2025 for the payments of their grants.' The criminals often wear uniforms and drive branded vehicles to appear legitimate. They typically arrive without appointments and insist on accessing SASSA beneficiaries' card PINs, an action that Postbank strongly condemns. Postbank has issued clear advice to help communities deal with suspicious activity: Alert neighbours discreetly and contact the police immediately. Report any such incidents to Postbank at 0800 53 54 55. Never give out your SASSA PIN even if the person claims to be an official. Memorise your PIN or, if written down, keep it far from the card. Postbank emphasised that it does not conduct uninvited home visits. Any official interaction must be requested through established home visit channels. SASSA beneficiaries should also reject any advice, even from someone claiming to be a government official, telling them to switch from their Postbank black or SASSA gold cards to other bank payment methods. '[SASSA] Beneficiaries must always remember that their cards and PINs are their personal keys to their money. They should never give them to anyone,' Postbank said.
