Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar on Thursday, as expectations dimmed for a near-term rate cut by the US Federal Reserve (Fed), an analyst said. 'It appears the Fed is concerned about the risks posed by persistently high inflation, despite weak job growth prospects. 'The impression is that the Fed may be reluctant to cut the federal funds rate to support growth, presenting a policy dilemma, as it must also ensure that inflation remains under control,' he told Bernama. Citing the recent FOMC minutes, Mohd Afzanizam said the risk of a US recession has increased, as uncertainties over trade policies and export restrictions could impede economic activity.
Advertisement Hence, at the upcoming FOMC meeting in June, the Fed staff is expected to release a revised set of macroeconomic forecasts, with a downward adjustment from the March projections appearing likely, he added. At the opening, however, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8998/9240 from Wednesday's close of 2.9271/9315, gained vis-à-vis the euro to 4.7494/7887 from 4.7838/7906, and appreciated against the British pound to 5.6779/7249 from 5.7028/7109. The local note, meanwhile, traded mixed against its ASEAN peers. It strengthened against the Singapore dollar to 3.2674/2950 from 3.2776/2825 on Wednesday, and advanced against the Thai baht to 12.8771/9947 from 12.9355/9614. YWM denies involvement in fundraising scam offering cash returns for donations
KUALA LUMPUR: Yayasan Waqaf Malaysia (YWM) has denied any involvement in fundraising activities that promise cash rewards in return for donations. YWM, in a statement today, clarified that such activities were carried out by a scam syndicate misusing the names of YWM and the Tabung Musa'adah JAKIM-YWM to collect donations illegally. 'This scam uses an online marketing platform, where members of the public are invited to join WhatsApp and Telegram groups, and are then asked or coerced into making donations with the promise of cash rewards in return. 'YWM stresses that it has never entered into any form of collaboration, agreement or recognition with the online marketing platform for the collection of donations under Tabung Musa'adah JAKIM-YWM, Tabung Sa'adah JAKIM-YWM, or any other fund or waqf initiative organised by YWM,' the statement said. YWM also reminded the public not to be deceived by any offers, invitations, or advertisements for waqf contributions via online marketing platforms, WhatsApp groups, Telegram, or any other unauthorised channels. YWM also said that all official donation matters could be conducted through its official website: as well as its official social media platforms: (Facebook), (Instagram), (X), and (TikTok). According to the statement, YWM will not hesitate to take legal action against any parties found misusing the name of Yayasan Waqaf Malaysia or YWM products for fraudulent purposes.

No Permit Needed For Usage Of Cooking Gas Not Exceeding 42 Kg
KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has once again clarified that the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or cooking gas in a subsidised gas cylinder not exceeding 42 kilogrammes (kg) or three subsidised gas cylinders of 14 kg at one time does not require a Scheduled Controlled Goods Permit (PBKB). Its director-general of enforcement, Datuk Azman Adam said however, businesses that use LPG exceeding 42 kg at a time are advised to apply for a PBKB via the Business Licensing Electronic Support System (BLESS) 2.0. "The existing legal provisions under the Control of Supplies Act (Amendment) 2021 which have been in effect since Oct 15, 2021, outline that the use of LPG exceeding 42 kg requires the application for a PBKB)," he said in a statement today. Accordingly, he said, throughout the KPDN's Cooking Gas Operation (Ops Gasak) from May 1 to Oct 31, no legal action will be taken against food and beverage (F&B) sales businesses regarding the requirement to have a PBKB for LPG. Instead, the inspection is only at the advocacy, review, and notification stage of compliance with the relevant laws and regulations. "At the same time, throughout Ops Gasak, LPG suppliers are allowed to continue to supply subsidised LPG cylinders to existing customers including F&B service traders even though they do not yet have a PBKB," he also said. Yesterday, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said that any party who does not use LPG cylinders exceeding three 14-kg cylinders or more than 42 kg at any one time, does not need to worry as they are not subject to the regulations to apply for a scheduled goods permit. In this regard, based on the 2021 Regulation, he said that eateries or food shops that do not store or use subsidised LPG cylinders not exceeding three cylinders at any one time are not required to have a scheduled controlled goods permit. -- BERNAMA
