They face charges of illegal mining-related offences and other crimes, including attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and unpolished diamonds, unlawful possession of explosives, contravening the Immigration Act and drug trafficking.
A 42-year-old man, Sydwell Shane Mkhantswa, was arrested and briefly appeared in the KwaMbonambi Periodical Court on June 17 in connection with the theft of minerals from Richards Bay Minerals (RBM).

His court appearance stems from a tracing operation in which Operation Vala Umgodi (OVU) members and the KwaMbonambi police intercepted a truck carrying suspected stolen zircon from RBM worth over R800 000.
Further investigation linked the man to another mineral theft case, in which he allegedly delivered stolen RBM minerals to Isipingo, Durban.
There, officers recovered minerals valued at over R24m. They arrested him on June 12 at a residence in Germiston, Gauteng.
In another operation on June 13, a wanted suspect was killed in a shootout with OVU members.
The SAPS sought him for allegedly firing at police officers in the Zamimpilo informal settlement and tracked him to the Soul City informal settlement.

There, they recovered a firearm, which will undergo ballistic testing to determine if it was used in other crimes.
Through co-ordinated operations across affected provinces, OVU continues to deliver on its mandate to disrupt and dismantle illegal mining in and around mining communities.

Amantle Samane's mother urges court to hand 3 life sentences to her daughter's killer
JOHANNESBURG - The mother of six-year-old Amantle Samane has urged the Johannesburg High Court to hand down three life sentences for the man who kidnapped, raped and murdered her daughter. The accused 25-year-old, Phethe Sara Simiao, pleaded guilty to all counts, including contravening the Immigration Act. ALSO READ: Amantle Samane's mom tells court she relives pain of her daughter's murder Simiao appeared before the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday for pre-sentencing, where the State argued for the harshest punishment against him. On the stand, Samane's mother, Ntombi, spoke, visibly emotional during her victim impact statement, detailing her family's anguish and the deep pain caused by the crimes. The State has requested the maximum penalties: life imprisonment for rape and murder, five years for kidnapping, and five years for the Immigration Act, despite the act prescribing a maximum of three months. During proceedings, Judge William Karam questioned the State on this, asking why they sought a sentence above the prescribed minimum. The defence did not oppose the State's submissions, maintaining that Simiao showed remorse by pleading guilty and cooperating with the court. Judge Karam also addressed Ntombi directly, encouraging her to seek support for herself and her children. "The court recommends that you continue to take your children to Sunday school because we all know that with God, all things are possible." Sentencing has been postponed to 1 September.

Limpopo police arrest suspect in R800,000 vehicle theft on N1 North
Limpopo police have recovered a stolen vehicle valued at R800,000 along the busy N1 North highway, arresting a 35-year-old man believed to be part of a vehicle theft syndicate. Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba confirmed that the arrest was carried out on Monday, August 18, during a joint operation involving the SAPS Limpopo Tracking Team, the Polokwane Accident Response Unit, and Tshimollo Security and Investigation. 'The breakthrough followed an alert issued after the vehicle was reported stolen in the Kempton Park policing area in Gauteng. Our teams immediately activated patrols on possible routes, and a grey Isuzu 250 D-TEQ 4x4 was spotted travelling on the N1 North near a lodge,' Mashaba said. Officers intercepted the vehicle and ordered the driver to stop. According to Mashaba, the suspect, who was travelling alone, failed to produce valid documents for the vehicle. Police then confirmed the bakkie had been stolen and arrested the man on the spot for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. Police say the arrest is a significant step in curbing vehicle theft along Limpopo's highways, where syndicates frequently attempt to smuggle stolen vehicles from Gauteng through Limpopo into neighbouring countries. The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the swift response by officers and their dedication to duty. The suspect is expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, August 19, facing charges of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. Police investigations are ongoing to determine whether he is linked to other cross-border theft cases. The Star
