Zohran Mamdani ‘absolutely' supports Mikie Sherrill in bid for NJ governor
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani, said he supports Rep. Mikie Sherrill in her bid to become New Jersey's next governor. Much has been made about who is and is not endorsing Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist who currently represents Queens in the New York State Assembly. While some have waffled on supporting him, Mamdani said in a new exclusive interview with PIX on Politics that he 'absolutely' supports Sherill when asked directly. More Local News The definitive support for Sherrill by Mamdani comes despite many establishment Democrats like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, both New Yorkers, still declining to formally endorse him. Sherill herself has waffled. Immediately after Mamdani's primary win, she said: 'If he's the Democratic candidate, which it sounds like he is, I assume I will [support him],' the Democratic nominee for New Jersey governor said to NBC Philadelphia. A month later, on PIX11 News, Sherrill said: 'I have not weighed in. I have not made endorsements in New York because I'm running in New Jersey. Her Republican opponent, Jack Ciattarelli, has made tying Sherrill to Mamdani a central theme of his 2025 campaign. Ciattarelli himself once distanced himself from President Donald Trump, but he is now endorsed by Trump. Mamdani's relevance to an important neighboring race in 2025 may be a preview of what Republicans seek to accomplish during the crucial 2026 midterm elections. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State In response, Mamdani has repeatedly said he would remain focused on affordability and uniting Democrats on that issue. On the midterms next year, Mamdani was specifically asked on PIX on Politics how he would handle them. 'What I'm excited about is creating an example in this city of what it means to deliver for working people,' Mamdani said. 'When we make buses faster, when we freeze the rent, when we deliver universal childcare, let that be an example of when Democrats actually get into office, deliver for working people.'
