Former Masters champion delighted to sign up to new NI Legends event at Galgorm
The Welsh wizard, who was also World No.1 during a remarkable career, will headline a field of former Major champions and Ryder Cup players for the Legends Tour event held at Galgorm on August 29-31.
It will be the 20th professional event hosted by Galgorm, which previously was the location for the ISPS HANDA World Invitational on the DP World Tour and LPGA Tour, as well as the NI Open which was held on various tours.
And Woosnam, who captained Europe to Ryder Cup success in Ireland at The K Club in 2006, is thrilled to get the chance to come and play at the event in two month's time.
'I am delighted to be heading back to Ireland to compete in this new Legends Tour event. Golf in Northern Ireland is thriving, especially with Rory McIlroy completing golf's Grand Slam recently and The Open returning to Royal Portrush next month,' said the World Golf Hall of Famer.
'Galgorm enjoys a great reputation as one of the country's best tournament venues and I am looking forward to competing here in August. The Pro-Am format for the NI Legends lends itself to a great week where amateurs get the chance to compete alongside the professionals.'
The Legends Tour, formerly known as the European Seniors Tour, is open to professionals aged 50 or over and its events regularly feature a wealth of talent including the likes of Miguel Angel Jimenez, Paul Lawrie, Paul McGinley, Colin Montgomerie and Jose Maria Olazabal.
As well as the main tournament, the event will also feature a Pro-Am that will see several high-profile names compete alongside the professionals the day before the event begins.
'We are delighted to be bringing the Legends Tour to Northern Ireland and the wonderful Galgorm. It's a venue with a long history of hosting professional tournaments and I'm sure it will present a real challenge to all the players,' said Legends Tour chief executive Phil Harrison.

Gary Henry, group golf director at the Galgorm Collection, added: 'The Black Desert NI Legends is something of a tournament milestone as its the 20th professional event to be staged at Galgorm, dating back to 2010 and including the 2020 Irish Open.

Rory McIlroy will be among the favourites at the US Open next week - and the Northern Irishman is using the Canadian Open to trial a new club ahead of driving at Oakmont Rory McIlroy has made the decision to change his driver in the run-up to the US Open. McIlroy is currently competing at the Canadian Open and is using the tournament to try out a different club ahead of the US Open at Oakmont Country Club next week. The Northern Irishman has endured a difficult spell with his driver of late, after his previous club failed an inspection before last month's US PGA Championship. His driver was taken off him two days before the tournament after testing showed it had become more springy than allowed. He later admitted he was 'p***ed off' the news of the failure had leaked into the media – and McIlroy is now having to make changes in response. He has swapped the TaylorMade Qi10 driver, which he used to win the Masters in April, for the brand's newer Qi35 model. McIlroy tried it out at Oakmont last week before giving it its first official test at the RBC Canadian Open at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley, where he hit an opening-round 1-over round of 71. 'It was my first outing with a new driver, and I felt like that went pretty well,' he said after hitting nine of 14 fairways. 'I hit some drives that I liked and that I liked to see, so that was encouraging. 'It's hard with the driver – the one I had been playing with previously, when I missed it, I was a little bit left. Then my miss with this one is a little bit right. It's just trying to figure that out and manage it a little bit. It's a nice feeling to get up the middle of the fairway and fully release it and know it's not going to go left on you.' The Qi35 isn't too different from McIlroy's old Qi10, with the same nine degrees of loft and the same Fujikura Ventus Black shaft. However, it is slightly shorter, which he hopes will give him more control off the tee at the US Open, where he triumphed in 2011. It's not entirely new to him. McIlroy used the Qi35 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier in the season, but the switch comes after his old Qi10 failed a routine test before the US PGA Championship. McIlroy was irritated that the news – which is supposed to stay confidential – was leaked and refused to speak to reporters at the tournament. 'It was supposed to stay confidential,' he said. 'Two members of the media were the ones that leaked it. I didn't want to get up there and say something that I regretted, either, because I'm trying to protect Scottie [Scheffler]. 'I'm trying to protect TaylorMade. I'm trying to protect the USGA, PGA of America, myself. I just didn't want to get up there and say something that I regretted at the time.'

Craig Bellamy promises Wales will not sit back and defend against Belgium
Wales coasted to a 3-0 win over Liechtenstein, the world's 205th ranked team, as second-half goals from Harry Wilson and Kieffer Moore added to Joe Rodon's 39th-minute opener. Wales cruise past Liechtenstein despite Neco Williams injury blow
Joe Rodon's first Wales goal – only his third in senior football – ended Wales' nervous wait to break the deadlock after 39 minutes. Harry Wilson and Kieffer Moore were also on the scoresheet in the space of three second-half minutes as Wales moved to the top of Group J with seven points from three games. But Wales will prepare for Monday's test against group favourites Belgium in Brussels with major concerns over the fitness of Williams. The Nottingham Forest full-back, in trying to cross on the byline midway through the first half, landed awkwardly and was in obvious pain as the Welsh medics ran to treat him. Williams attempted to get to his feet on two occasions before slumping to the turf and eventually left the pitch on a stretcher. After four points from opening March qualifiers, Wales fans were expecting a comfortable night against Liechtenstein – opponents ranked 205th out of 210 teams in world football. Liechtenstein had not won a competitive fixture since beating San Marino in September 2020, 35 games ago. Wales were unbeaten in Craig Bellamy's eight games, but the manager had said before the game that he was only interested in winning and not thinking about potential scorelines. Rodon gave warning of his aerial ability by nodding wide, and moments later rose impressively to meet Sorba Thomas' corner with a thumping header. Moore had a back heel kicked away by Buchel, and the Sheffield United striker was also out of luck after the break with a header that landed wide.
