Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Jordan Walker, Reese Olson and Brendan Rodgers

NBC Sports04-04-2025

Just as James Schiano did in his Tuesday Waiver Wire column, I'm leading off with a Cardinals outfielder here.
Jordan Walker - Rostered in 15% of Yahoo leagues
Walker was the Cardinals' Opening Day right fielder last week for the third straight year. This time around, though, it actually looks like he might keep the job into May.
It's just five games, obviously, but this looks like an improved Walker. He's right at the top of the bat speed leaderboard, trailing only Junior Caminero and Oneil Cruz. It's helped him get off to a 7-for-18 start in which he's already twice topped his career high for exit velocity, peaking at 116.5 mph. The whole 'pulling the ball in the air' thing remains difficult for him, but making consistent hard contact, even if it's not ideal hard contact, should be enough to give him some mixed-league value, especially if the steal attempts keep up.
Of course, that last part isn't guaranteed. One can't go five minutes listening to a Cardinals broadcast this year without hearing about how the team wants to be more aggressive on the basepaths. Walker has followed suit, attempting three steals already. The problem is that he's been successful only on one of those. Walker was 8-for-12 stealing bases in 168 career games coming into the season. He's fast enough to be successful there, but he isn't exactly a polished basestealer, and he'll likely be told to rein it in some if he keeps getting thrown out.
For now, though, pick him up and see what happens. If Walker winds up attempting 30+ steals this year, he'll probably turn out to be a top-40 fantasy outfielder, maybe even a top-30 guy.
Reese Olson - Rostered in 28% of Yahoo leagues
With his 3.53 ERA and 3:1 K:BB for an improved Tigers team last year, Olson should have already been on fantasy radars before his velocity jump this spring. Still, that he averaged 96.0 mph with his fastball, compared to 94.2 mph last season, in his first Grapefruit League outing made him quite a bit more exciting. He was at 95.6 mph in his regular-season debut last week, when he gave up four runs in a loss to the Dodgers. Fortunately, he won't be facing them again anytime soon. In fact, he gets the White Sox next, and it'd be quite a mistake not to grab him prior to that outing Saturday.
Olson, though, should be more than just a streaming play. The right-hander has a 23% career strikeout rate that's combined with a propensity for groundballs. He doesn't walk overly many batters, and he's in a strong pitcher's ballpark on a team with a quality defense (when healthy anyway) that plays in a weak division. Run support is definitely an issue right now, but pretty much everything else tilts the right way for Tigers pitchers. It's possible Olson's extra velocity will turn him in an All-Star candidate this year.
Brendan Rodgers - Rostered in 1% of Yahoo leagues
That Rockies hitters have a history of performing better after leaving Colorado has led to theories about the lasting effects of Coors Field on players. There's surely something to that; thrown baseballs react differently in Coors than everywhere else and getting away from having to make that adjustment every week probably does help a player out. Still, there is one other consideration at play when a hitter exits Colorado. It means he's no longer toiling for the most backwards organization in the league.
Rodgers, the third overall pick in the 2015 draft, was unceremoniously non-tendered by the Rockies in November after hitting .267/.314/.407 in 135 games last season. No one seemed especially eager to pick him up, either. The Astros, who wanted to move Jose Altuve to the outfield and who struck out on adding Jorge Polanco, finally signed him to a minor league deal as camps were opening. Most suspected they'd go with Mauricio Dubón at second base anyway, but Rodgers has largely claimed the job and gone 5-for-16 with three RBI in six games.
What makes Rodgers' first week notable is just how much harder he's swinging in Houston than he did in Colorado. Rodgers averaged 71.7 mph per swing last year, putting him in the 45th percentile of big leaguers. Right now, it's at 75.5 mph, which ranks him in the 93rd percentile. It's an enormous jump that greatly enhances his short-term career prospects. And, while it's a very small sample, thanks perhaps to a swing adjustment he said he was working on with hitting coaches, only five of his 12 balls in play so far have been on the ground. That's a 42% rate for a guy with an abysmal career mark of 53%.
Now, Rodgers doesn't truly have to be picked up in shallow mixed leagues right away. He's still a zero when it comes to stolen bases (he finally picked up his first in 452 career games last year). He's hitting low in the Astros order, and it's hard to say if manager Joe Espada is sold on him or if he'll turn to Dubón if Rodgers has a bad week. In fact, since his contact isn't guaranteed, he could still be let go within the first quarter of the season if Astros wanted to save some money. Still, Rodgers is one to watch, and it'd seem to be mostly thanks to the change in organizations. Those in deeper mixed leagues might want to give him a try and see it the changes lead to a 30-double, 20-homer campaign.
Quick Hits
- Dennis Santana was the initial choice to replace demoted closer David Bednar in the ninth for the Pirates and would seem to be the better addition than Colin Holderman in fantasy leagues. Dating back to the spring, Santana hasn't been quite as sharp as he was after being picked up by Pittsburgh last year. Holderman has been significantly worse, though.
- Especially now that he's DHing when he's not playing over Jacob Stallings, Hunter Goodman is a top-10 fantasy catcher for at least the short term. He's still rostered in only 27% of Yahoo leagues. It pains me a bit to recommend him over Iván Herrera, but Herrera isn't getting DH starts when the Cardinals use Pedro Pagés behind the plate.

Ohio State lands commitment from four-star DE Khary Wilder

Khary Wilder had many other top programs pursuing him but after spending a weekend at Ohio State and talking through the plan with that exceptional coaching staff, the four-star defensive end found his new home. On Tuesday, the four-star defensive end from Gardena (Calif.) Serra committed to the Buckeyes and is not planning any other visits. Advertisement 'It was just seeing how much of a priority I am for them,' Wilder said. 'Spending time with coach (Larry) Johnson and coach (Ryan) Day, coach (Matt) Patricia and all the coaches, they made me feel like a real priority and like I was really wanted there and that was the place I could call home. 'It was great meeting them. It was great sitting down and hearing their plan for me to dominate throughout my college years, how they see me fitting, my skill set and what I can work on and how I can build on my game to even before I get there and while I'm there, too. 'Coach Johnson was giving me tips and drills on what I could work on now for little things about my game that I could perfect and do better.' Wilder has always had dreams of playing in the pros and the four-star defensive end who shined at the Rivals Camp in Los Angeles and will be at the Rivals Five-Star in a couple weeks is fully aware of all the success the Buckeyes have had across the board especially along the defensive line. Advertisement He wants to be the next one. 'The NFL has always been the goal, that's been my dream, so seeing coach Johnson and Ohio State's track record of producing top-level d-linemen and NFL defensive ends, just seeing that really motivates me and encourages me,' Wilder said. 'If I'm a priority for them and they want me to come and they see me fitting and playing in their system and they're putting out so many NFL guys at my position, that's one step closer to my dream.' Notre Dame, Washington and UCLA were the other frontrunners but once Wilder finished his Ohio State visit, he knew what he was going to do. Advertisement 'It was really hard to say no to all of them because they all spent time building a great relationship with me, reaching out, talking to my coaches and my family and making me feel like a priority, too,' Wilder said. 'It was a decision I had to make but I feel very confident in my decision with coach Johnson and coach Day and coach Patricia and their plan for me.'

Shohei Ohtani looked 'really good' throwing 3 simulated innings in San Diego

Shohei Ohtani is moving ever closer to his first pitching appearance for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In fact, there's now a chance his fans might not even have to wait until the All-Star break. Ohtani looked sharp while throwing three simulated innings on Tuesday at Petco Park before the Dodgers faced the San Diego Padres, manager Dave Roberts said. The outing was another significant step in Ohtani's recovery from the elbow surgery that has prevented the two-way superstar from pitching since he signed with the Dodgers before last season. Ohtani threw just under 50 pitches to two minor league hitters during the third simulated game in his gradual comeback to the mound. The three-time MVP used his fastball and sweeper impressively, according to Roberts and Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior. "I thought he was really good," Roberts said. "I thought the fastball had life. I thought the sweeper was really good. ... (The hitters) said the stuff was coming out really well. It was about 44 pitches or something like that, so it was really good." The Dodgers have been cagey about the timeline for Ohtani's return to the mound, with Roberts suggesting in recent weeks that it might not happen until after the All-Star break. But after Ohtani's latest mound outing, Roberts now says the chance of Ohtani pitching in a game before the All-Star break begins July 14 is "north of zero." "It doesn't have to be a full buildup, because anything that he can give us is certainly going to be additive," Roberts added. "But I still stand by him and Dr. (Neal) ElAttrache, the training staff. They're going to drive this. So I'm just anxious for the next one." Ohtani hasn't pitched in a major league game since Aug. 23, 2023, when he abruptly left in the second inning of his final start for the Los Angeles Angels. He was eventually diagnosed with a torn elbow ligament that required surgery. Ohtani has demonstrated elite pitching ability when healthy: He went 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP while starting 86 games over five seasons for the Angels. He didn't pitch at all in 2019 and made just two starts in 2020 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Ohtani has remained steadfastly committed to playing both ways despite his hitting prowess, and the Dodgers could really use him on the mound this season. Los Angeles has 14 pitchers on the injured list, including expected starters Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki, Tony Gonsolin and Gavin Stone. Still, the Dodgers say they won't rush their cornerstone. "It's tempting," Roberts said with a smile. "I'm sure Shohei is tempted to just rip the Band-Aid off and get into a big-league game, but I think we're doing a good job of trying to take care of him. And truth be told, I don't know if anyone knows the right time to get him into a big-league game, but we're still being very careful." Ohtani has been only a designated hitter since he agreed to a 10-year, $700 million free-agent deal with the Dodgers. He immediately won his third MVP award in 2024, batting .310 with 54 homers, 130 RBIs and 59 stolen bases for the eventual World Series champions. Ohtani was in his usual spot as the Dodgers' leadoff hitter for Tuesday night's game against the Padres. Los Angeles planned to throw yet another bullpen game due to the rotation's extensive injury woes. Snell also threw his first full bullpen session in two months on Tuesday at Petco Park. The two-time Cy Young winner, who will throw another 20 pitches on Friday, has said his arm is now pain free after he was shut down with left shoulder inflammation on April 6. Snell made only two starts this season before going on the injured list. He agreed to a five-year, $182 million contract with the Dodgers last winter. Reporting by The Associated Press. NBA Trade Idea Brings $195 Million Power Forward To The Los Angeles Lakers

NBA Trade Idea Brings $195 Million Power Forward To The Los Angeles Lakers originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Los Angeles Lakers continue their search for the ideal big man in the offseason. After being linked to several players to address their issues, the Lakers may have yet another offer that could see them solve this problem. Advertisement As constructed, the Purple and Gold have virtually no big men on their roster. With Jaxson Hayes potentially on the way out in free agency, the Lakers have effectively depleted their resources of centers. To make matters worse, the team has also been torn about their position on forward Rui Hachimura. With the likelihood of Hachimura being included in trade packages, the team may very well be devoid of frontcourt depth. The factors in the Lakers' favor are that they still have the non-taxpayer MLE available to them, allowing them to potentially sign players like Clint Capela. Additionally, they also possess limited but relevant assets, giving them more flexibility with signing centers. But the larger concern now is their lack of frontcourt depth, i.e, the wings. Their interest in De'Anthony Melton could be of some benefit in this regard. But instead, we take a look at a trade proposal by Bleacher Report's Greg Swartz to help the Purple and Gold sign Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen. Advertisement Proposed Trade Details Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Lauri Markkanen Utah Jazz Receive: Rui Hachimura, Dalton Knecht, Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber, 2031 first-round pick The Lakers and the Jazz have engaged in several trades in the past. With another proposal on the horizon, we examine how the trade impacts each team. The Lakers Acquire A Bona Fide All-Star The acquisition of Lauri Markkanen could potentially reset the roster situation for the Lakers. At 7'0", Markkanen is a legitimate big man. Although he isn't a center by any means, he is a gifted forward, capable of spacing the floor and creating shots for himself. Advertisement Markkanen showed a lot of potential for developing into a star-caliber player during his early years in Chicago. This became a reality during the 2022-23 season with the Jazz when he earned his first All-Star nomination. He averaged 25.6 points and 8.6 rebounds that season while shooting 49.9% from the field and 39.1% from beyond the arc. Although the 28-year-old has been an inconsistent presence on the floor since, owing to injuries, he remains a capable player. Last season, even after playing only 47 games, he recorded an average of 19.0 points and 5.9 rebounds. On the Lakers, Markkanen would be a natural fit next to Luka Doncic and LeBron James. As mentioned, he doesn't slot in as a center, hence the need for a lob threat will still need to be addressed. However, acquiring a third star would give the Purple and Gold a massive offensive boost. In a system where he isn't the primary focus for defenders, Markkanen is capable of producing in a significant capacity. This move is also beneficial as he effectively becomes the replacement for Hachimura. While he may not be able to contribute in the same capacity on defense, he brings a very legitimate upside on the offensive front. The Utah Jazz Continue Their Rebuild The Utah Jazz were the worst team in the West last season. While this may have been a part of their strategy to tank, Utah is in no position to compete as currently constructed. Advertisement A trade of this nature simply helps the Jazz acquire necessary draft capital, with the 2031 first-round pick, and expiring contracts to facilitate moves in the following season. The likes of Maxi Kleber, Gabe Vincent, and Hachimura all fit the bill in this regard. There is a greater likelihood that the Jazz may simply trade Hachimura again to another team in the offseason. Having put an average of 13.1 points and 5.0 rebounds on 50.9% FG and 41.3% from beyond the arc, the forward would demand decent value. Trading him would allow Utah to build its reserves and potentially add young players as well. A key addition to the Jazz, however, would be young Lakers sharpshooter Dalton Knecht. The 24-year-old guard showcased a lot of potential for developing into a legitimate perimeter threat. He averaged 9.1 points and 2.8 rebounds on shooting splits of 46.1% from the field and 37.6% from beyond the arc. Given the Jazz's roster construction, Knecht may find himself in a position to play significant minutes, either as a starter or as the first choice off the bench behind Jordan Clarkson. Advertisement Potentially paired with Collin Sexton and Keyonte George, Knecht would find himself amidst Utah's project that could become relevant if nurtured. With good veteran leadership as well, the team could certainly look to improve upon last season's record. Lakers Gain Flexibility With Austin Reaves This trade proposal has its benefits for both teams, but it is quite evident that the Lakers are the real winners. While Markkanen's contributions are certainly an added advantage, it is important to address that the Purple and Gold would manage to acquire him without trading Austin Reaves in this deal. Reaves' contract has been a point of concern for the team. However, given the kind of interest he has garnered, he could help facilitate a move for a superstar. With Markkanen on the team, the Lakers gain the flexibility to reassess their approach and restructure their plans.
