Ahmad Maslan: PM holds final say on Cabinet reshuffle, but Zahid's push for Umno slot fair

Malay Mail03-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan reportedly said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has the right to determine Cabinet appointments, but it is not improper for political groups to make suggestions.
According to New Straits Times, Ahmad Maslan added that this included Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's proposal for a ministerial seat to be allocated to Umno if Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz joins PKR.
'It is up to the Prime Minister, as Cabinet matters fall under his prerogative and political authority,' he said.
Ahmad Maslan, who is also the deputy works minister, was responding to Anwar's statement yesterday that there was no urgent need for a Cabinet reshuffle, as the government remains fully functional despite the resignation of two ministers.
Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad stepped down from their Cabinet positions on May 28 after losing in the PKR party polls.
Two days later, Tengku Zafrul — who is minister of investment, trade and industry — resigned from Umno and announced plans to apply for membership in PKR.
Ahmad Zahid said last Friday that the economy minister post should be filled swiftly, particularly as the 13th Malaysia Plan is set to be tabled in July.

Cabinet agrees to act against ‘irresponsible politicians', says minister

Science, technology and innovation minister Chang Lih Kang criticised an 'irresponsible politician' for stoking tensions during the Merdeka month and for bullying. PETALING JAYA : The Cabinet decided yesterday to have firm action taken against 'irresponsible politicians' inciting sentiments over the recent Jalur Gemilang controversy, according to federal minister Chang Lih Kang. Chang, who is minister for science, technology and innovation, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other ministers were 'very concerned' that the issue would dampen public enthusiasm for National Day. Referring to reports of a police investigation regarding the controversy, he said: 'We shall wait and see whether anyone will eventually be charged in court,' Malaysiakini reported him as saying in a speech in Klang today. In a video on social media, Chang took further shots at an 'irresponsible politician' for stoking tensions during the Merdeka month. 'It's not only irresponsible, it is an act of bullying. Everyone knows who I am talking about.' His remarks appeared to be about Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, who led a group to a hardware shop in Penang after its owner was reported to have accidentally hung the national flag upside down. 'We are a nation and society governed by the rule of law. If there is a problem, lodge a police report and let the authorities take action. 'You are not an enforcement agency. You cannot just bring a group of people to someone's shop, disrupt their business and bully them,' Chang said.

Anwar: Ipoh Sentral embodies long-term vision and progress

IPOH: The Ipoh Sentral development is poised to become a new iconic landmark in the heart of Ipoh, reflecting progress guided by a long-term vision, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said that the large-scale project, entirely driven by the private sector through a strategic partnership between Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) and Railway Assets Corporation (RAC), carried a total Gross Development Value (GDV) of RM6.25 billion. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for Ipoh Sentral today, the prime minister expressed hope that the project would exemplify development grounded in Madani values. "We no longer seek grand physical developments that lack cultural soul. Every development must embody humanity, upholding compassion, respect, sustainability, and national dignity. "To achieve this, it requires synergy and close cooperation between developers, the city council, and relevant ministries, including Housing and Local Government, Education, Transport, and other agencies," he said on his Facebook page today. He added that the project was expected to create new opportunities, inspire public confidence, and reinforce Ipoh's identity as a vibrant, inclusive, and competitive city. The Ipoh Sentral development, aligned with the Perak Smart City Green Transport Agenda 2030, aims to transform Ipoh into a modern, sustainable transport hub with strong connectivity, while preserving the city's cultural heritage and fostering community cohesion.
