Tamil Nadu forest staff to now get Rs 4.5K per annum to stitch uniforms
As per the GO issued by Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary of Environment, Climate Change, and Forests, "The state government, after careful examination of the proposal of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Head of Forest Force), has decided to accept it and enhance the uniform allowance to Rs 4,500 per annum from forest guard to forest range officer, including for the stitching charges, on par with the police personnel, as the duties of the forest department employees include management and protection of forests and wildlife are eligible for receiving the uniform allowance on par with the police personnel.'
The hike will benefit as many as 4,404 staff (current strength), of which 539 are forest range officers, 1,146 foresters, 2,053 forest guards, 126 forest guards with driving licences, and 540 are forest watchers. The sanctioned strength in the forest department is 6,251.
The state government is expected to pay Rs 1,98,18,000 to the 4,404 staff and the GO came into force on Monday. Earlier, forest range officers and foresters were getting Rs 2,800 and forest guards, forest watchers and forest guards with licences were getting Rs 2,650.
Members of the Tamil Nadu Forest Staff Association expressed happiness as one of their main demands has been addressed. TNIE had reported about the issue on January 13, 2024 and April 2, 2025.
"Our long wait for uniform allowance has ended on a fruitful note, as we spend most of the time in the forest diverting the elephants. There have been incidents where shirts and pants were torn during patrol," said S Karthikeyan, president of the association.

Govt approves procurement of 97 Tejas jets for IAF
The government has approved the proposed procurement of 97 Light Combat Aircraft Tejas fighter jets and six advanced airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft for the Indian Air Force at a cost around Rs 85,000 crore, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The two procurement projects were learnt to have been given the green light by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, they said. The Tejas jets will be procured at a cost of around Rs 67,000 crore while the AEW&C project will cost the exchequer around Rs 18,000 crore, it is learnt. Second-hand Airbus-321 planes bought earlier from Air India by the defence ministry will be used for the AEW&C project that is aimed at enhancing the IAF's surveillance and signal intelligence systems. The procurement of the 97 LCA Tejas (MK-1A) comes nearly four years after the defence ministry sealed another deal involving the indigenously-built jet. In February 2021, the defence ministry sealed a Rs 48,000 crore deal with HAL for the procurement of 83 Tejas MK-1A jets for the IAF. The single-engine MK-1A will be a replacement for the IAF's MiG-21 fighters. The IAF is looking at inducting the warplanes as the number of its fighter squadrons have gone down to 31 from the officially sanctioned strength of 42. Tejas is a single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft capable of operating in high-threat air environments. It has been designed to undertake the air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike roles.

Tungabhadra dam crest gate replacement underway: Ktaka Deputy CM Shivakumar
Last Updated: Bengaluru, Aug 20 (PTI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Wednesday said the work to replace all 33 crest gates of the Tungabhadra dam is underway. According to Shivakumar, the Tungabhadra Board has awarded the contract to an Ahmedabad-based firm, and fabrication of six gates is taking place in Gadag and Hosapete with the assistance of JSW Steel. Necessary equipment has started arriving, and engineers in Andhra Pradesh have been asked to accelerate the work. He has also directed that more agencies be brought in to accelerate the project. 'For safety reasons, only 80 TMC of water can be stored, so it is not possible to release water for the second crop this year," the Deputy CM told the Legislative Assembly. If water is released, the crest gate installation would be hampered. Drinking water and industrial supply would continue as usual, and urgent repair works would be taken up, he added. 'As suggested by experts like Kannaiah Naidu, only 76 per cent storage — about 80 TMC — will be maintained. The Tungabhadra Board has taken this decision. Our state has no authority on this board. Whether others give money or not, we are ready to bear the cost to save the dam. We will protect our farmers as well as theirs." Karnataka bears 66 per cent of the repair cost while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together share the remaining 33 per cent. 'Andhra Pradesh has not earmarked any funds. I told officials we will pay even their share, but they are not willing to take it. We came forward to pay because we don't want our farmers to suffer," he said. Shivakumar also mentioned that he made three unsuccessful attempts to discuss the balancing reservoir at Navile with the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister. 'I even sent a team to hold talks, but they did not respond. I do not know why the Chief Minister did not give time, perhaps because more water is going to them," he remarked. He pointed out that the dam's capacity has reduced to 105 TMC due to silt, and a detailed plan to build the balancing reservoir, costing Rs 11,000 crore, was submitted to the Tungabhadra Board on November 22, 2024. 'There has been no response despite letters and discussions. I wrote to the Chief Ministers of both states on February 14, 2025, and also spoke to the concerned ministers," he said. Separately, a survey of all dams in Karnataka has been conducted due to technical concerns that arose at the Kabini dam. Shivakumar said, 'The life of a crest gate is about 50 years, so we are focusing on safety." Recalling last year's incident when the 19th gate broke off, he said, 'A replacement stop gate was installed within a week and disaster was averted. Many, including opposition leaders, criticised us. I accepted the criticism happily because criticism dies, but work remains." The Bajal Committee recommended immediate replacement of all gates, and Shivakumar said the government has acted accordingly. 'The process will take at least eight months," he said. The Tungabhadra project began in 1945 and water flow to canals started in 1953. Karnataka's share is 138.99 TMC, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together get 73 TMC. Irrigation benefits cover 9.26 lakh hectares, including 3.75 lakh hectares in Koppal, Raichur, Ballari and Vijayanagara districts, Shivakumar said. Oppn corners Sukhu govt over misleading job data, unfulfilled promises
Shimla: The opposition BJP, on the third day of the 12-day monsoon session of Himachal Pradesh assembly, cornered the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress govt over the "misleading figures" on jobs provided to the youth and non-fulfillment of its election promises, including providing one lakh jobs in a year and five lakh in five years. BJP legislator from Sulah constituency, Vipin Singh Parmar, during the question hour on Wednesday, brought it to the notice of the House that in July last year, the state govt had claimed to have provided 34,980 jobs to the youth, but on Aug 15 this year, chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that only 23,191 jobs were provided. Questioning the gap of over 10,000 jobs in a year, Parmar pointed out that the state govt was issuing contradictory statements and misleading the people. As the CM was listing the department-wise jobs provided by the govt to date, along with the efforts to legally provide youth overseas employment, the BJP legislators remained unconvinced and marched out of the House raising slogans. Vidhan Sabha speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania ruled that the walkout by the opposition, despite an exhaustive reply from the CM, was uncalled for and would not go on record. He said stern action would be taken against the guilty. BJP MLA from Bharmour Dr Janak Raj, through a calling attention notice, had demanded stringent action against the delinquent govt officials in the case. The MLA highlighted that as the minor gave birth to a child, the authorities shockingly left the girl along with the child in the house of the accused and as the word spread in the village, the victim was later married to a person in Jammu and Kashmir and the child was handed over to someone else. The MLA further said he came to know about the incident on Aug 11 and informed the resident commissioner of Pangi, Chamba deputy commissioner, and even the chief minister, but no action was taken for six days. He said it was only when he sent the issue to the Vidhan Sabha, he was informed on Aug 19 that an FIR was registered and the accused along with the person to whom the minor was married had been arrested. Sadbhavana pledge Earlier, as the House proceedings started on Wednesday, speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania administered the 'Sadbhavana Day Pledge' to the legislative assembly members on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, which is observed as Sadbhavana Diwas. The pledge called for working for the emotional oneness and harmony of all the people of India regardless of caste, region, religion, or language and to resolve all differences through dialogue and constitutional means without resorting to violence. Vidhan Sabha centenary Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania also apprised the House that as the construction of Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, also known as the historic Council Chamber, was completed with Rs 8.5 lakh on Aug 20, 1925, it had completed a century. He said it was inaugurated by the then Viceroy of India, Lord Reading, on Aug 20, 1925, and the first session of the legislative assembly was held in the building on Oct 1, 1963.
