One Oregon Duck named to ESPN preseason All-American team

USA Today3 days ago
ESPN released it's annual preseason college football All-American team on Monday, compiled with first- and second-teams.
Just one Oregon Ducks player was included on the list: running back Makai Hughes, who joins the program after two seasons with the Tulane Green Wave. He was named a second-team running back alongside Penn State Nittany Lions' Kaytron Allen.
Penn State's Nicholas Singleton and Notre Dame Fighting Irish's Jeremiyah Love occupy the first-team spots at the running back position.
It's a nice honor for Hughes, who figures to be Oregon's top back in 2025 after compiling 2,779 rushing yard and 22 rush touchdowns in two seasons at Tulane. He's also a factor in the pass game, catching 30 passes for 243 yards and a pair of scores with the Green Wave.
Cases could've been made for several other Ducks to be on the list: EDGE Matayo Uiagalelei, linebacker Bryce Boettcher and safety Dillon Thieneman. There could also be a conversation about wide receiver Dakorien Moore, who's considered to be one of the top true freshman in the country.
However, none made the list, with Hughes being the lone Duck on ESPN's list.

Saints QB Tyler Shough lands fully-guaranteed contract

The post Saints QB Tyler Shough lands fully-guaranteed contract appeared first on ClutchPoints. Although the New Orleans Saints are entering a new era, they are burdened with some of the same issues that have plagued them the last few years. Their roster is riddled with uncertainties and an unfavorable salary cap continues to loom large, but the best way to mask those deficiencies is by finding a franchise quarterback. The organization is hopeful that rookie Tyler Shough can evolve into that guy, so much so that it is awarding him a fully guaranteed $10.95 million contract, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. 'The contract also includes annual Roster Bonus structure whereby Shough receives the majority of his compensation each year during the first week of training camp,' the NFL insider reported on X. The Saints made what was one of the more polarizing picks in the 2025 NFL Draft when they chose the 25-year-old QB with the No. 40 overall selection, passing on Shedeur Sanders and other more accomplished signal-callers. New Orleans is obviously committed to seeing this union through, however. This latest move suggests that Shough will have a strong chance to seize the starting job either by Week 1 or early in the 2025-26 NFL campaign. The former Oregon, Texas Tech and Louisville talent will still have to prove he is superior to second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler during training camp, but Saints brass seems quite keen on him. Will the Saints' gamble pay off? Longtime general manager Mickey Loomis and first-year head coach Kellen Moore have invested an early second-rounder in Shough, and there is pressure on them to construct a viable plan moving forward. This team cannot make true progress in its rebuild until it fixes the QB situation. Positioning the Chandler, Arizona native for success is essential. Shough, who is praised for his strong arm, enters the NFL with seven years of college experience and an ideal frame at 6-foot-5. He only played one full season, though, and posted lackluster numbers overall, making him a huge wild card moving forward. Injuries decimated his tenures with the Ducks and Red Raiders, but Shough made a name for himself with the Cardinals last season. He completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns and helped Louisville earn a 9-4 record. If this prospect can stay healthy and improve on his accuracy, then maybe the Saints have indeed secured a long-term solution under center. Fans should take solace in knowing that this guaranteed contract is both practical and affordable. Now, New Orleans must prove it made the right choice by picking him in the first place. The newly paid Tyler Shough will head into training camp next week, eager to reward the Saints' faith. Report: NFLPA puts in-house counsel Heather McPhee on paid leave

The NFL Players Association continues to generate headlines for less-than-ideal reasons. Via Don Van Natta Jr. and Jeff Passan of the NFLPA placed in-house counsel Heather McPhee on paid administrative leave on Tuesday, after (per the ESPN report) multiple employees filed complaints with the union's H.R. department about her. She allegedly failed to follow her supervisor's direction and allegedly bullied colleagues and disrupted the union's work environment, per the ESPN report. The NFLPA will need to have plenty of evidence and documentation to show this move isn't a pretext for retaliation. She was reportedly instrumental in the investigation arising from financial dealings by NFLPA officials with OneTeam Partners, and some believe she was otherwise sounding internal alarms about other irregularities. She reportedly retained a lawyer for a possible whistleblower claim against the union. Coincidentally, the lawyer she hired is the same lawyer who handled a whistleblower case against now-former executive director Lloyd Howell's previous employer, Booz Allen Hamilton. That case resulted in a $377 million settlement. On May 30, McPhee reportedly sent a memo to the NFLPA executive committee regarding the fact that she had been contacted by federal investigators exploring OneTeam Partners and the NFLPA. She reportedly wrote in the memo that she was ordered to stop working on anything related to the OneTeam Partners probe, 'with the threat of employment discipline.' She also urged the executive committee to meet on the matter. One of the complaints against her was filed by Matt Curtin, the head of NFL Players, Inc. and a member of the OneTeam board of directors. Hired by Howell, Curtin was a candidate for interim executive director, before the sudden resignation of NFLPA chief strategy officer JC Tretter. If/when she sues, the case will likely expose plenty of things that previously weren't known publicly. Which won't be good for the NFLPA. Still, someone apparently decided it's better to deal with the amorphous threat of future litigation over any potential disruption resulting from McPhee's ongoing presence in the workplace. Whether the disruption is good or bad depends on perspective. The NFLPA will likely paint her as a disgruntled employee who was trying to set the union up for a severance agreement, a settlement, or a verdict. She'll likely explain that, at a time of maximum chaos and misadventure by the union, she was trying to put the interests of the organization over the interests of specific individuals who, in her belief, were engaged in potentially inappropriate conduct. You know, like using union dues to finance multiple trips to a strip club. For more on the recent issues with the union, check out my initial visit to Pablo Torre Finds Out. And my second. And my third. And, as of this morning, my fourth. As someone texted tonight, "Cue episode five."
