Sabalenka Passes Mertens Test to Reach Wimbledon Quarter-finals

Aryna Sabalenka maintained her stranglehold over Belgian Elise Mertens with a hard-fought 6-4 7-6(4) victory on Sunday to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals as she bids for a maiden title at the grasscourt Grand Slam.
The Belarusian top seed came into the match on Centre Court having beaten Mertens 10 times in 12 meetings - the most for her against any player on the WTA Tour - and the one-sided rivalry looked set to continue after she made a strong start.
That impression would change, however, as Sabalenka dropped her level and wasted a 4-1 lead but the three-times major winner recovered quickly and claimed the opening set with a break on the back of a searing backhand crosscourt winner, Reuters reported.
Sabalenka followed up with a cheeky volley that clipped the net cord in the opening game of the next set but her former doubles partner responded with solid returning in the next to break and surge ahead.
Her momentum did not last long, though, as Sabalenka drew level after six games and the world number one stepped up again at crucial points in a see-saw tiebreak, which she finished with a forehand volley to book a last-eight meeting with Laura Siegemund.

Wimbledon: Novak Djokovic overcomes a poor start to beat Alex de Minaur and reach the quarterfinals

Novak Djokovic overcame an uncharacteristically unsteady start to avoid what would have been his earliest exit at Wimbledon since 2016, coming through for a 1–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–4 victory over 11th-seeded Alex de Minaur in the fourth round Monday. With Roger Federer, an eight-time Wimbledon winner, sitting in the front row of the Royal Box, very little went right at the outset for the 38-year-old Djokovic on the grass below during a breezy afternoon with the temperature in the 60s Fahrenheit (teens Celsius), a week after matches were contested in record-breaking heat. But Djokovic turned things around enough to grab the middle two sets and then really surged at the end after trailing 4–1 in the fourth. He took the last five games and 14 of the final 15 points. His bid for an eighth Wimbledon title and 25th Grand Slam singles trophy overall will continue against No. 22 Flavio Cobolli of Italy. Cobolli reached his first major quarterfinal with a 6–4, 6–4, 6–7 (4), 7–6 (3) victory over 2014 US Open champion and two-time major runner-up Marin Cilic. Djokovic will be appearing in his 63rd Slam quarterfinal.

'Props to the Moms': Bencic Reaches Her First Wimbledon Quarterfinal on Ninth Attempt

Belinda Bencic advanced to her first Wimbledon quarterfinal – 11 years after her All England Club debut – by beating 18th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova 7–6 (4) 6–4 on Monday. Bencic, who had lost in the fourth round on three previous occasions, failed to convert five match points while serving at 5–3 in the second set. But on the sixth one, Alexandrova sent a forehand long on No. 1 Court. 'For you guys, it was entertaining,' Bencic said about that marathon game at 5–3 where Alexandrova finally converted her fourth break point to stay in the match. 'For me, it was a big stress.' The 28-year-old Bencic's best result at a Grand Slam was reaching the semifinals at the 2019 US Open, where she also reached the quarters on two other occasions. The Tokyo Olympic champion, playing at Wimbledon for the ninth time, had not been into the last eight at any of the other three majors until now. 'I always got stuck in the fourth round (at Wimbledon),' Bencic said in an on-court interview. 'So it was so important for me today to be able to kind of break through to the quarterfinal.' Bencic missed last year's grass-court Grand Slam tournament while she was on maternity leave, having given birth to her first child – a daughter named Bella – in April 2024. She said traveling with a child on tour is still relatively easy while Bella is so young, but that she's spending a lot more time taking pictures when she's at tournaments. 'I'm juggling it like every mom does,' Bencic said. 'So props to the moms.' Bencic will play the winner between seventh-seeded Mirra Andreeva and No. 10 Emma Navarro, who were playing on Centre Court later. Navarro beat defending champion Barbora Krejcikova in the previous round, ensuring there will be a first-time winner of the women's tournament this year. Also later, No. 8 Iga Swiatek was playing Clara Tauson, and No. 19 Liudmila Samsonova faced Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

Federer is back in Wimbledon's Royal Box as he watches Djokovic's match

Roger Federer is back at Wimbledon. The eight-time champion at the All England Club was sitting in the Royal Box to watch Monday's fourth-round matches on Centre Court, starting with his former rival Novak Djokovic playing Alex de Minaur. Federer was greeted by a loud round of applause as he entered the box together with his wife, Mirka. He was wearing a blue suit featuring a circular purple badge on his lapel that former champions are given to denote them as members of the All England Club. The Swiss former No. 1 won his first title at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament in 2003 and his eighth in 2017. His last final was in 2019 when he lost an epic five-setter to Djokovic that was the longest title match in Wimbledon history. Also in the Royal Box on Monday was King Frederik X of Denmark, comedian Michael McIntyre, and Michael and Carole Middleton – the parents of Kate, Princess of Wales, who is the patron of the All England Club.
