Scott McLaughlin's Indianapolis 500 ended in absolute heartbreak — and before it technically started.
As the 33-car Indy 500 field warmed up with pace laps on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway track, the No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet driver was doing what everyone else out there was: warming up his tires. He was lightly swerving on the track to push some heat into his cold tires on a cold track, following a rain-delayed race start.
But McLaughlin lost control of his car and spun into the pit wall. It's unclear if he simply lost control or if residual moisture on the track played a role because there wasn't contact with another car. Either way, the damage on his car was overwhelming, ending McLaughlin's and the No. 3 team's day before the race officially began.
McLaughlin's car wasn't the only issue for Team Penske at the Indy 500, not including some controversy and penalties. Penske driver Scott Dixon's No. 9 Chevrolet looked like it had a brake fire as well, but he was able to start the race still.
Just in total disbelief:
Afterward, a devastated McLaughlin said he didn't know exactly what happened, but called it "by far the worst moment of my life."
"I really have no idea what happened," McLaughlin told Fox Sports afterward. "Just really upset for my team. They built me a fantastic car, again. I'm really sorry to my sponsors, my fans, my family. I don't know what happened. I can't believe we're out of the race. I just had so much hope today."
An absolute heartbreaker for a driver who had a solid chance of winning the 2025 Indy 500.

Alec Blair said no matter what happens Saturday he'll likely shed a tear. The De La Salle-Concord center fielder, one of the Bay Area's best two-sport high school athletes ever, plays in his final prep sporting event when the top-seeded Spartans (28-4) host Serra (28-6) in a Northern California (CIF) Division 1 championship game. Blair has been a four-year All-Metro player in basketball and two years in baseball, with a third time also guaranteed with a team-leading .446 average heading into Saturday's game with 33 hits (14 for extra bases), 30 runs and 24 RBIs. The long and rangy outfielder is ranked among the top 50 recruits nationally in both sports, which is extremely rare. He plans to play both at the University of Oklahoma. His most vivid memory in four years he said 'is just growing up with all my guys, the brotherhood we've built. I'll never forget it.' What will he be thinking about heading into Saturday's game? 'Just winning. It's that simple. Score more runs than Serra and don't let them score.' That's what either winning pitcher Graham Schlicht (De La Salle) or Nate Hui (Serra) did Thursday in semifinal shutouts. Schlicht, a Stanford commit, walked a season-high four, but struck out nine and allowed just four hits. Hui scattered seven hits and struck out two. A pair of RBI singles from Antonio Castro — he tied De La Salle's single-season record with 44 RBIs — was all the offensive support Schlicht needed.
