'Worst moment of my life': Scott McLaughlin crashes on Indianapolis 500 parade lap
INDIANAPOLIS— Scott McLaughlin's race ended before it started as the No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet crashed on a warm-up lap before the 2025 Indianapolis 500 began, causing it to begin under caution. 'I have no idea what happened. I just lost it,' McLaughlin told reporters outside of the IU emergency medical center. 'I don't know whether there was a little bit of moisture, I don't know. Something happened and I'm just really sorry to my fans (and) my team that built me two fantastic cars with a lot of hope today. By far, worst moment of my life. Scott McLaughlin's Indy 500 heartbreakingly ended before the race even started
Scott McLaughlin's Indy 500 heartbreakingly ended before the race even started Scott McLaughlin's Indianapolis 500 ended in absolute heartbreak — and before it technically started. As the 33-car Indy 500 field warmed up with pace laps on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway track, the No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet driver was doing what everyone else out there was: warming up his tires. He was lightly swerving on the track to push some heat into his cold tires on a cold track, following a rain-delayed race start. But McLaughlin lost control of his car and spun into the pit wall. It's unclear if he simply lost control or if residual moisture on the track played a role because there wasn't contact with another car. Either way, the damage on his car was overwhelming, ending McLaughlin's and the No. 3 team's day before the race officially began. McLaughlin's car wasn't the only issue for Team Penske at the Indy 500, not including some controversy and penalties. Penske driver Scott Dixon's No. 9 Chevrolet looked like it had a brake fire as well, but he was able to start the race still. Just in total disbelief: Afterward, a devastated McLaughlin said he didn't know exactly what happened, but called it "by far the worst moment of my life." "I really have no idea what happened," McLaughlin told Fox Sports afterward. "Just really upset for my team. They built me a fantastic car, again. I'm really sorry to my sponsors, my fans, my family. I don't know what happened. I can't believe we're out of the race. I just had so much hope today." An absolute heartbreaker for a driver who had a solid chance of winning the 2025 Indy 500.

The Indy 500 winner who had to apologize for drinking orange juice instead of milk
The Indy 500 winner who had to apologize for drinking orange juice instead of milk Indy 500 Sunday is full of great traditions, from the singing of "Back Home Again in Indiana" during pre-race ceremonies to the winner chugging from a bottle of milk in victory lane. But what happens when a driver wants a different drink after one of the biggest wins of their lives? This happened in 1993, and it caused a bigger incident then you may imagine. Why do Indy 500 winners drink milk? The tradition dates back to the 1930's, a time when Louis Meyer, a three-time Indy 500 winner, casually enjoyed buttermilk as a refreshment after races. The milk-drinking ceremony became a part of the annual post-race celebration in 1956 and has remained ever since. The Indy 500 winner who opted for a different drink in victory lane The annual milk chug has become a part of pre-race operations - every driver pre-selects which variety of milk they want in victory lane prior to the race just in case they win. Yet in 1993, Formula 1 legend Emerson Fittipaldi had a different plan in place. He piloted his Team Penske Chevrolet to victory lane for a second career Indy 500 victory, and celebrated with.... orange juice? Fittipaldi, a Brazilian, chose to drink orange juice in order to promote the citrus industry in his home country. Fittipaldi was actually booed by fans over the stunt the following year, and though he did follow tradition and later drink milk during the same celebration of his win, he issued a public apology to the American Dairy Association.

Josef Newgarden and team win Pit Stop Challenge in all-Penske final
The No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet team of Josef Newgarden collected the $50,000 prize and bragging rights after once again winning the Pit Stop Challenge. They had to beat their own teammates to do it as the No. 12 Team Penske Chevrolet of Will Power joined them in the final. It was the first time two Penske cars went to the final in the Pit Stop Challenge since 2007. In the semi-finals, Newgarden had to face off with the Arrow McLaren Chevrolet of Pato O'Ward, which is the same driver he had to beat in the battle for the win in last year's Indianapolis 500. While he prevailed over O'Ward once again, Power's team had to beat Scott Dixon and the Chip Ganassi Racing team. Penske vs. Penske Will Power, Team Penske Will Power, Team Penske Penske Entertainment Penske Entertainment Advertisement In the final, Newgarden won the first round with a 10.45-second run. However, Power's team fought back in the second attempt, winning with a 10.5-second run. In the third round, Newgarden's team won it all with a blistering run of 10.263 seconds. The two teammates shook hands after the competition. "They are the unsung heroes of this race," Newgarden told IndyCar on FOX. "They are risking it every time we're coming in. Cars speeding up and down here at 60mph. It's not easy to do this job. They work on these cars all day, all night, and then they have to come out and perform in these moments and on Sunday. It's a huge part of what we do. I always feel so lucky to have them behind my back. I know we're going to crush them whenever we get into the pits. It helps you win the Indy 500. Everything has got to be perfect and this is a big part of it. I love my team. Nothing is going to take this smile from my face here at Indy. I love this place." Newgarden will start 32nd in the Indy 500 and Power 33rd after the Penske attenuator controversy, which put both drivers to the rear of the field and resulted in the ousting of three key Penske executives including Tim Cindric. They are certainly going to need these fast pit crews on Sunday as they attempt to cut a path through the field.
