West Bengal youth lynched by drunken mob; locals protest
Lynching of a youth for protesting against public nuisance by a group of drunk miscreants has triggered tension in the Bakultala police station area in Jaynagar. Tensions have been simmering since Sunday (June 1, 2025) night when the youth, Sayem Khan, was allegedly verbally threatened, and then beaten to death after he opposed a group of drunkards reportedly creating nuisance in public.
Another person was grievously injured in the attack. The West Bengal police have arrested two, and named 13 people, including the prime accused Sadiqullah Gazi, in the First Information Report.
Local residents have been agitating since Monday demanding that the accused be arrested and charged the police with inaction to prevent Sayem Khan's unfortunate death.
Superintendent of Police of Baruipur, Palashchandra Dhali said on Wednesday that they were probing the incident. He said the deceased's family had come to the Bakultala police station and was asked by police personnel to lodge a formal complaint.
'However, until Sunday night, we received no complaint regarding public consumption of alcohol there, or public nuisance, which they had reportedly protested against. We would have taken action if they had intimated us,' Mr. Dhali said.
A section of locals however alleged that the violence unfolded on account of a turf war between two local factions of the Trinamool Congress.
'The deceased used to work in Kolkata and was visiting home. He was not part of the ruckus. However, he sustained injuries from those who were creating ruckus. He was rushed to a hospital in Baruipur, where he was pronounced dead. We stand with the family, the accused will be punished,' said Jaynagar's Trinamool MLA Biswanath Das.
Selim Khan, a relative of the deceased, alleged that after their family protested against the drunken nuisance, the group of miscreants dispersed, and came back with a larger group, armed with sticks, rods, and explosives.
'In the presence of police personnel on Sunday, the miscreants threatened to kill Sayem before next morning. The police did not act on the threat. Then a group of 50-60 people came back and violently attacked my uncle and brother. My brother was half dead before he was taken to the hospital,' Mr. Selim Khan said.

A political row has erupted in West Bengal after Trinamoool Congress MLA Narendranath Chakraborty described 'Operation Sindoor' as a 'pre-planned drama' and 'a game in the name of war.' The MLA from Pandaveswar Assembly constituency in Paschim Bardhaman district said that those politicising 'Operation Sindoor' will face resistance and will end up in the dustbin. 'If there has been a crime, why wasn't it punished,' asks Jagdeep Dhankhar on Justice Yashwant Varma issue
Is a parliamentary motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma the answer, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar asked a gathering of Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, in Chandigarh on Friday (June 6, 2025) adding that 'if there has been a crime, why wasn't it punished?' Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) said the government would bring out a resolution in Parliament in the monsoon session for impeachment motion against Justice Varma. Justice Varma was subject of a probe by a Supreme Court-appointed panel after a fire incident at his Delhi residence led to the discovery of several burnt sacks of cash at the outhouse. Mr. Dhankhar said the government of the day was handicapped because of a three-decade-old judicial order that did not allow it to register a First Information Report (FIR) without permission from the judiciary. The Vice-President said, 'So I pose a question to myself, in deep pain, worried, concerned, in anguish — why was that permission not given? That was the minimum that could have been done on the earliest occasion.' He also questioned why even after the Supreme Court probe, Justice Varma has not been punished. 'I have raised the issue. Ultimately, if a motion is brought to remove a judge, is that the answer? If there has been a crime, a culpable act shaking the foundations of democracy — the rule of law, why wasn't it punished? We have lost more than three months, and the investigation has not even been initiated. Whenever you go to court, they ask why the FIR was delayed.' The permission should have been granted soon after the cash was discovered and if not then it should have come up at least when the Supreme Court-appointed panel filed its report considering the 'compulsive, expedient situation'. The cash haul, Mr. Dhankhar said, was 'obviously tainted, unaccounted, illegal and unexplained' and the system must move to find out 'whose money it is.' He further asked, 'Has the money influenced the judiciary in judicial work? All these issues are agitating not only the minds of lawyers but also people on the street. But let the lid be blown off the can of worms. Let these skeletons in the cupboards come out. Why was there no FIR? Why has there been no investigation at all?' The gap between 'may be true' and 'must be true', the Vice-President said, is very thin. 'But this thin distance has to be negotiated by evidence of unimpeachable veracity. So, I put innocence at a very high level. I am not aware of who is guilty. But one thing is for sure — a crime of great enormity, shaking the foundations of the judiciary and democracy, has taken place. I hope it will be addressed,' he said.

Court denies bail to lawyer booked for ‘fabricating Bombay HC orders, swindling Rs 2.5 crore from woman'
A sessions court in Mumbai has rejected the bail application of a lawyer booked for allegedly swindling Rs 2.57 crore from a woman by fabricating orders of the Bombay High Court. The accused, Vinay Kumar Khatu, 42, was arrested by the Azad Maidan police in South Mumbai in October last year. 'In this case, the applicant is a practising lawyer with standing of more than 20 years. I presume that he knows and understands the sanctity of his profession and the services he rendered to society and his clients. The allegations against the applicant are very serious,' Additional Sessions Judge V G Raghuvanshi said in the order dated June 3. The complainant in the case said that she had engaged Khatu as a lawyer in 12 cases related to her personal and property matters. The First Information Report (FIR) stated that the accused told her that he had filed appeals in the pending cases before the high court and informed her in 2022 that two cases had been decided in her favour, seeking fees from her in each of the pending cases, and inducing the woman by showing the favourable orders. When she subsequently tried to look for the orders on the high court website, she failed to find them and filed the FIR in 2024. Denying that he had given her any fabricated order, Khatu claimed that the complainant is a 'seasoned litigant' and this was her way to avoid paying professional fees to advocates. The court, rejecting Khatu's plea, said there was prima facie proof in terms of a WhatsApp chat against him. The court held that previously, two offences were filed against Khatu for misrepresenting himself as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. It took into consideration that people engage lawyers because they do not understand court procedures or the nature of orders and laws. It added that using its discretion to grant bail to the accused in the case would send a 'wrong message' to society, considering the seriousness of the allegations.
